CAT Counselling 2026 and Admission Dates

CAT 2026 is the entrance-test cycle; the following MBA admission process takes place in 2027. The CAT bulletin gives the examination and likely result timing. Individual IIM policies give their own shortlist and offer windows.

The Ahmedabad dates above are not a timetable for every IIM. Interview appointments are communicated through the respective call letters. There is no single CAT counselling registration date, nationwide choice-filling deadline or common seat-allotment round.

The CAT result provides the scorecard used in selection. CAT 2026 scores remain valid and available for download until 31 December 2027; that validity does not extend an institute's application or acceptance deadline.

How Admission Works After the CAT Result

An IIM may use a separate application or ask shortlisted candidates to complete a detailed form. Selecting a programme in CAT does not remove later registration, consent, document-upload or interview requirements. A registration invitation and a PI call are different messages.

The institute may check academic marks, category documents and work claims more than once. Acceptance of a file at the interview stage does not establish final admission eligibility. Original records and completion of the qualifying degree can still be checked at joining.

CAT registration does not submit applications to every non-IIM college accepting CAT. Those institutions use their own forms, fees, deadlines and selection criteria; the IIMs do not manage their selection process.

The registered email address and mobile number must remain valid throughout selection. These are the contact details used for call letters and admission communication, not just examination updates.

CAT Cutoff, Interview Call and Final Merit

A minimum percentile lets an application enter a screening stage. It does not by itself promise a PI call. The CAT cutoff can be sectional as well as overall, and the actual shortlist may require more than the published minimum.

For IIM Calcutta MBA 2027-29, the Open-category first-stage floors are 80 in VARC, 80 in DILR, 75 in QA and 85 overall, with non-negative raw scores in every section. Candidates who meet these conditions are then compared on CAT scaled score, Class 10, Class 12 and gender-diversity points for the PI/WAT shortlist. Other categories have their own floors.

The final-stage weights are different from shortlist weights. Two current examples are:

Calcutta's final components total one hundred. Its school-mark and gender points belong to the earlier shortlist formula, not extra rows to add to this final total. Ahmedabad's forty-percent component is its normalised composite score; it is not forty percent of CAT marks alone.

A group discussion is not a compulsory common stage for all IIMs. The two programmes above specify PI and a writing test. WAT is a Writing Ability Test; Ahmedabad calls its assessment an Analytical Writing Test, or AWT. The writing-test guide concerns that written stage, not a group interview.

After the required interviews and tests, each institute prepares its category-wise merit list. This is why two applicants with the same overall CAT percentile can receive different calls or offers.

CAP and JAP: Previous Admission-Cycle Arrangements

The arrangements below were for CAT 2025-based admission to the 2026-28 batch. CAP/JAP membership and dates for CAT 2026-based admission have not been announced.

CAP 2026: Expression of Interest was mandatory but was not a PI call. The shortlist depended on CAT performance and available intake slots. Only shortlisted candidates could proceed to fee payment and PI slot selection. A candidate shortlisted for multiple programmes attended one PI, whose score could be used for the further processes.

The CAP notice separated regular MBA cutoffs from specialised MBA cutoffs. Applying a regular-MBA threshold to every specialised programme would be incorrect. Admission policy, final merit lists and offers remained independent at Bodh Gaya, Jammu and Sirmaur.

JAP 2026: Candidates who had opted for at least one participating IIM and met the academic and CAT criteria received a registration invitation. Missing this mandatory registration ended consideration. Registered candidates were then screened separately for PI; successful registration was not an interview guarantee.

JAP required an APAAR ID in the form and original relevant academic, reservation, professional and employment certificates at PI. The four IIMs retained separate fee-deposit and admission-confirmation processes. One shared PI therefore did not produce one shared admission offer.

CAP and JAP should not be treated as interchangeable names. Neither historical process created a common college preference list that automatically allotted every participating institute.

Documents and Final-Year Graduation Deadlines

The exact upload list comes from the institute or interview process. These records support the main claims checked during admission:

For CAT 2026, an NC-OBC certificate must be issued on or after 1 April 2026. An EWS certificate must be valid for 2026-27 and based on financial year 2025-26. The applicable Central Government list at the close of CAT registration governs reservation, and the CAT category cannot be changed afterwards.

Applicants awaiting a renewed NC-OBC/EWS certificate at CAT registration had to upload one PDF containing the completed undertaking, the older certificate and proof of applying for the valid certificate. That registration arrangement did not eliminate the category-document checks during admission.

For a CGPA, use the institution's certified percentage-conversion method. Dividing CGPA by maximum CGPA and multiplying by one hundred is the fallback only when the institution confirms it has no conversion scheme.

Final-year admission is provisional. Completing degree requirements and submitting the final marksheet are separate deadlines, as these current policies show:

Ahmedabad requires the final degree result to meet its qualifying marks: fifty percent, relaxed to forty-five for SC, ST and PwD. Its December submission deadline does not permit examinations or supplementary requirements to continue beyond 30 June. Calcutta also cancels admission if the required final records are not produced by its September deadline.

Work evidence is institute-specific. Calcutta requires an authorised employer letter with employment dates, designation and role, plus payslips. Self-employment and family-business claims need registration, relevant licences or tax proof where a payslip is unavailable. Its current work-duration cutoff is 31 January 2027; the earlier CAT form's work cutoff is not automatically reused.

Internship, apprenticeship, articleship, training, curricular projects and unpaid work do not count under Calcutta's work-scoring rule. These exclusions concern work points, not a ban on freshers applying.

Admission Offers, Waitlists and Fee Payment

An admission offer sets the programme, acceptance formalities, payment deadline and joining conditions. A waitlist position is not an offer, and paying one institute does not accept an offer from another.

Ahmedabad plans its initial offers and waitlist tentatively for the second week of April 2027. Later offers to waitlisted candidates depend on how many selected candidates accept. A previous batch's waitlist movement cannot establish the number of offers in the new batch.

There is no common CAT counselling fee. The CAT examination fee, an institute's application fee, an offer-acceptance payment, tuition and any refundable deposit are different charges. A refund rule for one of them does not automatically apply to the others.

For Ahmedabad, an applicable refund carries an INR 1,000 processing deduction and is returned to the account from which payment was received. The policy does not make every payment refundable at every stage. The offer and withdrawal conditions still determine whether the refund applies.

An offer also does not create a right to join in a later year. Calcutta's MBA 2027-29 policy does not allow an admission offer to be deferred. Historical JAP 2026 likewise had no general deferment entitlement; any exception belonged to the individual institute.

Admission is confirmed only after the programme's conditions are met. A missing final qualification, unsupported category claim or incorrect employment record can affect admission even after an offer has been issued.
