CAT Cutoff: Qualifying, Interview and Final Selection

A CAT cutoff is an institute-specific requirement, not one passing score for the entire exam. The first screening can require an overall percentile, a minimum in each section, academic eligibility and a valid category claim. Clearing it puts you in the pool for further evaluation; it does not reserve an interview or a seat.

A raw score, scaled score and percentile are also different measures. Use CAT score calculation to understand the scoring stages before comparing a result with percentile cutoffs.

IIM Ahmedabad CAT 2026 Cutoff

These minimum percentiles apply to IIM Ahmedabad PGP 2027–29 admission through CAT 2026. The sectional requirement applies separately to VARC, DILR and QA.

Ahmedabad does not select the interview list by percentile alone. Its application rating uses school marks, graduation, work experience and gender diversity. The policy also distinguishes academic disciplines when preparing the shortlist. A student with a higher CAT percentile can therefore have a different shortlisting outcome from another student in the same broad reservation category.

The final formula gives 50% to the personal interview, 10% to the Analytical Writing Test and 40% to the normalized composite score. That last component is not simply your CAT percentile multiplied by 0.40.

IIM Calcutta CAT 2026 Cutoff

IIM Calcutta MBA 2027–29 has different minimums for the three sections. It also requires a non-negative raw score in each section.

The interview shortlist uses CAT scaled score, Class 10 and Class 12 marks, and gender diversity. Graduation marks are not one of those listed pre-interview scoring components, although the qualifying-degree eligibility still applies. Do not import Ahmedabad’s graduation-rating table into a Calcutta calculation.

For final selection, Calcutta assigns CAT 30 points, personal interview 48, WAT 8, academic diversity 6 and work experience 8. The CAT entry threshold and the eventual offer score answer different questions.

Can a High Overall Percentile Make Up for a Low Section?

Not when the institute requires all section cutoffs. For example, an Open-category applicant with 98 overall, 79 VARC, 90 DILR and 90 QA misses Calcutta’s 80 VARC minimum. The 98 overall does not cancel that shortfall. This is an illustration of the rule, not a prediction of an interview result.

For an Ahmedabad General-category applicant, 95 overall with 84 in one section falls below the 85 sectional requirement. First compare each section and the overall score with the correct category row; only then consider the institute’s profile score.

An EWS or disability category must not be treated as a universal fixed reduction. Ahmedabad and Calcutta publish different category structures, so match the category and programme before using the figures.

What Happens After You Clear the Cutoff?

Interview calls come from the individual institutes. A CAT application is not a common seat-allotment form, and a shortlist from one IIM does not imply selection at another. Keep the CAT scorecard, degree records, category certificate and any work-experience evidence consistent across the institute applications.

For final-year applicants, provisional eligibility still depends on finishing the degree and supplying the required completion evidence within the admitting institute’s deadline. After the interview, compare the offer, acceptance deadline and withdrawal conditions of the actual programme. A coaching estimate of a “safe percentile” is not an offer letter.
