CAT Reading Comprehension Topics

Reading Comprehension tests how accurately you follow a passage. Its subject may be unfamiliar, but the question normally asks you to work with the information and argument given, not recall facts about that subject.

Passages may discuss society, philosophy, science, economics, history or culture. These are contexts for reading, not chapters with fixed question quotas. A science passage can ask about an argument's structure; an economics passage can ask about a word's contextual meaning.

For an inference, separate a supported conclusion from an attractive speculation. For an author-position question, distinguish a view the author describes from the view the author endorses. For an EXCEPT question, resolve the wording before judging the options: the task may be to find the one statement that does not fit.

Paragraph Summary and Para Jumbles

A paragraph summary must retain the main claim without adding a conclusion the paragraph does not support. An option can mention the correct topic and still be wrong because it turns a qualified claim into an absolute one.

For para jumbles, look for relationships between sentences: a pronoun needs an antecedent, an example normally follows the idea it illustrates, and a contrast needs something to contrast with. A sentence that introduces an undefined this or such a result is unlikely to stand alone as the opening.

Do not force a memorised sequence such as general statement, example, conclusion onto every paragraph. The supplied sentences may build a contrast, describe a process or correct an earlier assumption.

Odd Sentence Out and Sentence Placement

In odd-sentence questions, all sentences can share vocabulary while one follows a different line of thought. Ask whether the remaining four form a coherent argument, not simply which sentence contains a different noun.

For sentence placement, read the insertion point with both neighbouring sentences. The new sentence must connect backward and leave a sensible continuation. A placement that fits only the preceding line can still break the paragraph.

The CAT VARC practice papers contain passage and paragraph tasks. Isolated synonym lists or sentence-correction exercises do not reproduce all of these demands.

CAT VARC Weightage: 2025 Slot 2

The 2025 Slot 2 VARC paper had 16 RC and 8 verbal-ability questions. The question-level split below describes that completed paper, not an official 2026 allocation.

RC accounted for 16/24, or about 66.7%, of this paper's VARC questions. Each of the four verbal task types contributed two questions. A historical percentage is not a guarantee that the next paper will repeat that split.

The current 2026 instructions do not give a fixed VARC total, non-MCQ count or passage-genre quota. The CAT 2025 paper archive lets you inspect the full paper rather than rely on an undated weightage table.

VARC Time, Response Types and Marking

VARC is the first section and has 40 minutes under the standard duration. Reading Comprehension and Verbal Ability share that timer; neither receives a separate official time allowance.

In an MCQ, select the answer from the choices. A typed task may ask for a sentence sequence or an odd-sentence number. Read the input instruction rather than assuming every typed answer is a mathematical quantity.

The 2025 VARC section had 24 questions and a maximum of 72 raw marks. An incorrect typed answer earned zero; a wrong MCQ lost 1 mark. Finishing VARC early does not transfer time to DILR. The CAT exam pattern covers the full timing sequence and PwBD provisions.

Worked Example: A Summary That Goes Too Far

Original example: a city library extended its opening hours. Evening visits rose, while daytime visits stayed unchanged. The report does not give borrowing figures.

The close alternative often fails because it adds a cause, changes a quantity or broadens the population. A summary should not convert more visits into more borrowing, and a single-library observation does not establish a rule for all libraries.

When reviewing an RC or summary error, identify exactly what the wrong option changed: scope, certainty, cause, comparison or author position. That diagnosis is more useful than writing only careless mistake. The CAT VARC preparation guide connects such review to timed passage practice.
