IIM Ranchi CAT 2026 Cutoff and Programme Eligibility

IIM Ranchi has not announced its CAT 2026 selection criteria. The published policy covers CAT 2025-based admission to MBA, MBA-BA and MBA-HRM for 2026-28. Its PI-shortlisting reference was:

Candidates needed positive scaled scores in all three sections. The policy also made clear that meeting the displayed floors did not assure a place in the shortlist: category-wise ranking still applied.

The common JAP registration stage had separate academic floors:

MBA-BA had an additional programme condition: a full-time undergraduate degree in engineering, technology, architecture, science, computer applications, mathematics or statistics, with at least 60% or equivalent CGPA. The candidate also needed Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science or Computer Applications in at least one undergraduate semester or trimester.

Ranchi retained the final decision on whether a degree fell within an eligible MBA-BA field. The general JAP graduation floor did not cancel the separate 60% MBA-BA requirement. The policy did not specify a category-wise relaxation to that programme clause.

An eligible MBA applicant was therefore not automatically eligible for MBA-BA. The CAT eligibility guide concerns examination entry; individual MBA programme rules can be more specific.

Final Merit: Section Scores and Bonus Marks

Each CAT section contributed candidate's scaled section score / maximum scaled score in that section x its weight. QA carried 35 points, compared with 15 each for VARC and DILR. This was not an equal-section formula or overall percentile multiplied by 65%.

For example, a QA score of 40 against a section maximum of 60 contributes 23.33 points out of 35. The denominator is the maximum scaled section score for the relevant CAT cycle, not an assumed question-count maximum.

Five bonus marks were added for female and transgender candidates across all three programmes. A separate five-mark bonus applied only to the MBA-HRM list for candidates with at least two and at most three years of eligible full-time work experience.

These bonuses were added after the 100-point base calculation. A qualifying female or transgender MBA-HRM applicant could receive both bonuses. They were not replacements for the normal ten-point work-experience component.

The IIM selection criteria vary by institute: a shared JAP interview did not give Ranchi the same final formula as Kashipur, Raipur or Tiruchirappalli.

School and Graduation Points

The academic profile had a maximum of ten points: two for Class 10, four for Class 12 and four for graduation. At 90% in both school examinations and 80% in graduation, a candidate received 1 + 2 + 2 = 5 academic points.

Exactly 85% entered the middle school band, while exactly 95% entered the highest school band. In graduation, exactly 70% entered the two-point band and exactly 85% entered the four-point band.

School percentages used every subject on the marksheet, irrespective of a board's best-of-subjects practice. The points table was separate from eligibility: zero academic-profile points for a record did not automatically mean that the applicant failed the entry conditions.

A profile calculation also had to respect the programme route. For MBA-BA, a candidate could meet the academic scoring band but still fail the required degree, subject or minimum-percentage condition.

Work Experience and the MBA-HRM Bonus

Work was counted in completed months up to 31 December 2025 for this intake. JAP accepted qualifying full-time paid employment after the declaration of graduation or CA/ICWA(CMA)/CS results, backed by TDS, provident-fund or professional-tax evidence where applicable.

The exact two-year boundary matters. At 24 months, the base work score was five, while the additional MBA-HRM bonus was also available. At 25-36 months, the base score was ten and the HRM bonus could still add five. At 37 months, the base score dropped to five and the two-to-three-year HRM bonus no longer applied.

JAP excluded these forms of experience:

• Pre-graduation, part-time, project, internship or articleship work
• Work before CA/ICWA(CMA)/CS qualification
• Fellowship or unpaid work
• Salary paid in cash or through UPI apps
• Work as owner of a partnership or sole proprietorship, or as part of a family enterprise
• Company roles as partner/director/CEO or otherwise where the company paid no GST or turnover was below GST limits

The five-point HRM bonus was for MBA-HRM only. The same experience could contribute to the base work score for MBA or MBA-BA without producing that extra programme-specific bonus.

An interview-stage document check did not prevent the institute from verifying employment again at admission. An unsupported claim could lead to rejection or cancellation even after an offer.

JAP Registration, Interview and Final-Year Proof

JAP 2026 brought together Kashipur, Raipur, Ranchi and Tiruchirappalli, with Raipur coordinating a physical PI process. The email inviting eligible candidates to register was not the interview call. Only registered candidates could enter the later PI shortlist.

The form required an APAAR ID. PwD applicants needed a valid UDID card and benchmark-disability eligibility. Original academic, reservation, work and professional certificates, as applicable, had to be produced for PI and were subject to further admission verification.

Final-year bachelor's or CA/CMA(ICWA)/CS candidates used the latest completed academic-period marks for the initial check. Provisional admission required a Principal/Registrar completion certificate issued and submitted by 30 June 2026. Final marksheets and qualification proof were due when issued and no later than 30 September 2026.

Ranchi's admission FAQs allowed a provisional degree certificate while the original was pending, but admission remained provisional until the missing final documents were supplied by that September deadline.

The historical registration instructions required valid category documentation, including EWS/NC-OBC certification for FY 2026-27 where applicable. Missing required valid category/UDID documents or a mismatch with CAT/JAP information could withdraw the offer. The current CAT certificate requirements should not be confused with the later institute-registration check.

A job notice period did not create permission to join late. The institute's FAQs expressly ruled out late joining because it would cause an attendance shortage.

Fees, Programme Switching and Withdrawal

For MBA, MBA-HRM and MBA-BA 2026-28, the published six-term fee was INR 19.20 lakh, excluding mess. The institute's FAQs confirmed that hostel charges were included.

Term 1 included an INR 20,000 caution deposit and INR 10,000 alumni fee. Mess was charged by term, not by meal or day; the fee order stated INR 27,000 plus 5% GST. The tax-inclusive INR 28,350 is a calculation from those stated figures.

The full Term 1 payment was required to accept an offer; part payment was not allowed. Only one programme offer could be held at a time. A later conversion from one programme's waitlist could allow a switch through the portal, releasing the earlier seat.

Before the notified start of classes, switching required withdrawal from the earlier programme and registration against the new offer, with a portal request for fee adjustment. After classes commenced, the earlier programme's fees were not refundable for such a switch.

Withdrawal after registration but before the notified class-start date allowed the fee back after an INR 1,000 deduction. On or after classes started, the exceptions to non-refund were caution deposit and alumni fee, subject to clearance and a no-dues form. Books and welcome-kit costs could be adjusted against caution money; mess charges were not refundable.

An offer accepted on or after classes had started did not create a new pre-class refund window. Withdrawal was generally irreversible unless the institute permitted otherwise. The policy placed eligible refunds within 60 days of the notified class-start date.

For payment failures, the admissions office needed to receive the payment before admission could be confirmed. The contact was office.admissions@iimranchi.ac.in, with escalation to chair.admissions@iimranchi.ac.in after 48 hours without a response.
