University of North Bengal admits students to courses such as BA and MBA through different selection routes for its 2026 intake. Students from West Bengal and North-East India can apply for its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Application charges range from INR 150 to INR 500, depending on the course and category.
For undergraduate admission, the main route is the West Bengal Centralised Admission Process (WBCAP), with CUET UG scores also accepted from 2026. Postgraduate study covers Science, Arts, Commerce, Management and Law. Across programmes, West Bengal government reservation rules provide 22% of seats for SC, 6% for ST, 10% for OBC-A, 7% for OBC-B and 5% for PwD applicants.
- UG applicants for BA, B.Sc and B.Com use WBCAP for the 2026-27 session. Seat allocation and counselling are handled through wbcap.in.
- MBA applications for 2026-27 accept NBU-MAT or scores from CAT, MAT, XAT, CMAT and WBJEMAT. Students shortlisted through these scores proceed to Group Discussion and Personal Interview.
- For MA, M.Sc and MCA admission in 2026-27, students should check the programme-specific application and admission schedule at nbu.ac.in.
- WBCAP handles undergraduate applications. Since 2026, students can also seek admission using CUET UG scores.
- The course and applicant category determine the application charge, which falls between INR 150 and INR 500.
- Every programme follows the reservation rules set by the West Bengal government.
- After the entrance stage, MBA applicants are assessed through Group Discussion, Personal Interview, Essay Writing and Extempore, a short speech without prior preparation. Each component carries 25 marks.
- A valid CAT, XAT, MAT, CMAT, GMAT, ATMA or WBJEMAT score allows an MBA applicant to skip NBU-MAT.

University of North Bengal UG Admission 2026
BA, B.Sc, B.Com and other undergraduate applicants apply through WBCAP. From 2026, CUET UG results provide another admission route. The selection method for law, computer applications and management courses is listed separately below.
UG Qualifications and Selection Routes
| Programme | Academic Requirement | Admission Route |
|---|---|---|
| BA, B.Com | Pass Class 12 through a recognised board with at least 50% marks. | WBCAP merit ranking; CUET UG scores are also accepted from 2026. |
| B.Sc | Complete Class 12 with Science subjects and a minimum of 50% marks. | WBCAP merit ranking or an accepted CUET UG score. |
| BA LLB (Hons) | Obtain at least 50% in Class 12 from a recognised board. | Selection and counselling conducted by the university. |
| BCA, BBA | Class 12 qualification from a recognised board with 50% or more. | Merit-based selection at university level. |
How UG Seats Are Allotted
A student's position in the WBCAP merit ranking guides undergraduate selection. Higher overall Class 12 marks improve preference during seat allocation. Students applying through the parallel CUET UG route receive preference for stronger entrance scores.
- Participating colleges and universities across West Bengal use a common merit ranking generated by WBCAP.
- During choice filling, applicants can place NBU among their preferred universities.
- Reserved seats include 22% for SC, 6% for ST, 10% for OBC-A and 7% for OBC-B students.
- An allotted seat is confirmed only after the required documents have been verified at NBU.
Students value NBU's choice of programmes and its research environment. They also view undergraduate admission through WBCAP as transparent and based on merit.
UG Application Steps
- Use an active mobile number and email address to create an account at wbcap.in.
- Enter your personal information and academic record, checking every detail for accuracy.
- Add University of North Bengal to your preferred choices.
- Upload your Class 12 marksheet along with a passport-size photograph.
- Complete the online application payment. General-category applicants pay INR 150 for each choice.
- Follow the seat allotment updates on WBCAP, then visit NBU for document verification on your assigned date.
University of North Bengal PG Admission 2026
Students can pursue MA, M.Sc, M.Com, MCA, LLM and other postgraduate courses at NBU. Applications go through nbu.ac.in. For most programmes, admission depends on CUET PG results or the university's entrance examination.
PG Academic Requirements
| Programme | Academic Requirement | Admission Route |
|---|---|---|
| MA in Arts and Social Sciences | A bachelor's degree in the relevant subject with at least 50%; the minimum for SC/ST applicants is 45%. | CUET PG results or NBU's entrance examination. |
| M.Sc in Science streams | A relevant B.Sc qualification with 50% or more. | CUET PG results or NBU's entrance examination. |
| MCA | BCA, or a bachelor's degree with Mathematics, with at least 50%. | University entrance examination and merit. |
PG Merit and Counselling
For most postgraduate courses, CUET PG is the main selection route. Students who do not take CUET PG can seek admission through NBU's own entrance test.
- MA and M.Sc selection primarily considers CUET PG performance.
- Seats are offered in the order of merit established through CUET PG or the NBU entrance examination.
- All postgraduate seats follow West Bengal's reservation policy.
Submitting a PG Application
- Create your registration on nbu.ac.in while applications for your PG programme are being accepted.
- Choose the course and enter the details of your bachelor's degree.
- Provide scanned copies of your graduation marksheet, photograph and CUET PG scorecard, where applicable.
- Pay the course-specific application charge, ranging from INR 150 to INR 500.
- Report to the NBU campus for counselling according to the announced timetable.
Students in the final year of graduation may submit a provisional PG application. Their admission becomes final after they provide the graduation marksheet and meet the required minimum marks.
University of North Bengal MBA Admission 2026
MBA applicants first compete for shortlisting through an accepted management entrance score or NBU-MAT, the university's management aptitude test. Those shortlisted then complete Group Discussion, Personal Interview, Essay Writing and Extempore before the final merit list is prepared.
MBA Eligibility and Entrance Requirements
| Applicant Group | Required Qualification | Selection Route |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum qualification | A bachelor's degree from a recognised university with at least 50% marks. | NBU-MAT or a valid CAT, XAT, MAT, CMAT, GMAT, ATMA or WBJEMAT score, followed by Group Discussion, Personal Interview, Essay Writing and Extempore, each worth 25 marks. |
| SC/ST/OBC applicants | A bachelor's degree with a minimum of 45% marks. |
MBA Shortlisting and Final Merit
Selection has 2 stages: entrance-based shortlisting and a further assessment worth 100 marks. NBU combines performance in both stages to decide the final merit order.
- Students with a valid CAT, XAT, MAT, CMAT, GMAT, ATMA or WBJEMAT score do not have to sit NBU-MAT.
- The final assessment assigns 25 marks each to Group Discussion, Personal Interview, Essay Writing and Extempore.
- For SC/ST/OBC applicants, the NBU-MAT qualifying requirement is relaxed by 5%. The qualifying score is 50% for other applicants and 45% for these reserved categories.
- The entrance score and the subsequent assessment score together determine a student's place on the final merit list.
Prepare for every part of the second-stage assessment. A CAT or MAT score alone does not secure an MBA seat: applicants must also clear NBU's Group Discussion and Personal Interview round and perform in Essay Writing and Extempore.
MBA Application Steps
- Open the MBA admission section at nbu.ac.in, or visit the dedicated portal at mba.nbu.ac.in.
- Create an account using a working email address and mobile number.
- Enter your educational record and management entrance examination scores.
- Upload your bachelor's degree marksheet, entrance scorecard and photograph.
- Submit the application after paying the required charge.
- Visit the NBU campus on the assigned date for Group Discussion, Personal Interview, Essay Writing and Extempore.

University of North Bengal Admission FAQs
Ques. Can a student seek an NBU undergraduate seat without taking CUET?
Ans. Yes. Students can apply through WBCAP without a CUET result, as this route uses Class 12 marks to establish merit. CUET UG has been an additional route for NBU undergraduate admission since 2026.
Ques. What Class 12 marks should BA and B.Sc applicants have?
Ans. The basic requirement is a recognised-board Class 12 qualification with an overall score of at least 50%. SC/ST applicants may qualify under the marks requirements allowed by West Bengal government reservation rules.
Ques. When must an MBA applicant take NBU-MAT instead of using another entrance score?
Ans. NBU-MAT is needed when an applicant does not hold an accepted CAT, XAT, MAT, CMAT, GMAT, ATMA or WBJEMAT score. The minimum NBU-MAT qualifying score is 50%, reduced to 45% for SC/ST/OBC applicants.
Ques. Which seat reservations apply, and what proof is needed?
Ans. Under West Bengal government rules, NBU reserves 22% of seats for SC, 6% for ST, 10% for OBC-A, 7% for OBC-B and 5% for PwD students. Applicants claiming these benefits must present valid caste or disability certificates when taking admission.
Ques. What assessment follows the MBA entrance shortlist?
Ans. Shortlisted students complete a 100-mark assessment. Group Discussion, Personal Interview, Essay Writing and Extempore each account for 25 marks. NBU adds this performance to the entrance score when preparing the final merit ranking.
Ques. How much should students budget for the admission application?
Ans. Depending on the programme, the application charge is INR 150 to INR 500. WBCAP undergraduate applications have a lower charge for each choice. Students applying for PG courses or MBA make their payments directly through the NBU portal.
Ques. Where can applicants find the separate admission rules for distance study?
Ans. NBU's Directorate of Distance Education provides details for distance programmes. Their eligibility conditions and application procedure differ from those for the regular campus-based degrees described here.
Ques. Is a completed graduation result needed before submitting a PG form?
Ans. Students still in their final graduation year can apply provisionally. To confirm the seat, they must later submit their final marksheet showing that they have achieved the minimum marks required for the programme.
Ques. Which financial support schemes can NBU students access?
Ans. Available schemes include the Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means Scholarship, Kanyashree support for girl students and the SC/ST Post-Matric Scholarship. Minority students in research programmes can also access the Maulana Azad National Fellowship.
