The BIL or Bihar Institute of Law was established by the Law Society of Bihar in January 1984. It is affiliated with Patliputra University and recognized by the Bar Council of India. In 2023, India Today ranked BIL Patna as 70th among law colleges in India. BIL also provides various facilities, including a library, moot court, hostel, mess, and sports amenities for students. BIL Patna offers undergraduate programs such as BA LLB and LLB, along with a LLM program at the postgraduate level. To be eligible for admission, candidates must have completed 10+2 or its equivalent in any stream with a minimum of 45% aggregate marks from a recognized board. Admission is based on performance in the BILAT conducted by the university. To qualify for admission, students must secure at least 40% marks in the BILAT exam, after which a merit list is issued for final selection.

BIL maintains close ties with the Hon'ble High Court and the Legal Aid Authority to keep students informed about the activities of various organizations working in the field of law and justice, as well as those assisting underserved communities. The college regularly arranges internships for students in organizations such as the Legal Aid Authority, Patna High Court, Civil Court, Tribunals, and Jails, providing them with practical exposure to the legal system and hands-on experience in different legal environments.
