Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) is a government medical institution based in Ranchi, Jharkhand. Founded as Rajendra Medical College and Hospital in 1960, it was upgraded to its current form on 15 August 2002. RIMS operates as an autonomous body under an Act of the Jharkhand State Legislature. It is affiliated with Ranchi University for examinations, while its medical courses have National Medical Commission recognition and its BDS course has Dental Council of India recognition.
RIMS Ranchi held the 24th position in the NIRF Medical Rankings 2024. Its Bariatu campus includes a 2,170-bed multi-specialty tertiary care teaching hospital with 33 clinical departments. These include Cardiology, Neurosurgery, Oncology and Nephro-Urology, along with a dedicated 20-bed Trauma Centre.

BDS admits 50 students each year. The 9 PG Diploma choices are Anaesthesia, Orthopaedics, Radiodiagnosis, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, ENT, Child Health, Dermatology and Psychological Medicine. Under government scholarships or the fee waiver allowed by institutional rules, Jharkhand domicile students do not pay tuition fees.
Entrance examination scores and central or state counselling decide admission to RIMS Ranchi. Applicants must first qualify for the examination linked to their course, register for the relevant counselling route, choose RIMS and complete document checks after receiving a seat.
MBBS has 180 seats, comprising 150 general seats and 30 EWS seats, while BDS has 50 seats. NEET UG is the selection test for both programmes. Candidates may compete through MCC's All India Quota or the Jharkhand state counselling route.
MCC allocates 15% of both MBBS and BDS seats through online AIQ counselling. Jharkhand state counselling fills the other 85%. In recent admission cycles, the General-category NEET UG closing rank for AIQ MBBS seats at RIMS usually remained between 20,000 and 40,000. Jharkhand domicile students generally face a more accessible rank requirement through the state quota.
NEET PG counselling covers every MD, MS and PG Diploma seat. MCC PG AIQ counselling manages 50% of these seats, and Jharkhand state counselling allocates the remaining 50%.
NEET SS is required for the DM courses in Cardiology and Critical Care Medicine and the M.Ch courses in Neuro Surgery and Paediatric Surgery. A relevant MD degree is needed for DM, while a relevant MS degree is required for M.Ch. The institute runs DM Cardiology through its dedicated Cardiac Care Centre, making it a sought-after option.
RIMS Ranchi functions as a government teaching hospital, so it does not follow the usual campus-placement model used by engineering and management colleges. Once the compulsory rotating internship is complete, MBBS graduates can prepare for NEET PG, apply for government health services or begin private practice.
| Career Pathway | Notes |
|---|---|
| NEET PG for MD or MS | The main higher-study route followed by most MBBS graduates |
| NEET SS for DM or M.Ch | A super-specialty option after completing MD or MS |
| Jharkhand Health Service | State government Medical Officer and civil surgeon positions |
| Central Government Health Service | Appointments through UPSC CMS and CGHS |
| Private hospitals and clinics | A career choice available after the MBBS internship |
| MBBS internship stipend | Paid according to Jharkhand government rules |
Training takes place in a public hospital with 2,170 beds and 33 departments. Ward duties, outpatient work and emergency medicine give students experience with a large number of patients. This clinical exposure supports preparation for NEET PG and government service examinations.
RIMS Ranchi has remained within the top 30 institutions in the NIRF Medical category. Its position changed from 15th in 2023 to 24th in 2024. It is the only medical institution from Jharkhand included in the NIRF Medical ranked list.
