Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) formerly known as the Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences was established in 1995 vide the Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences Act (Act No. 9 of 1995). It is considered to be the first-ever Public Private Partnership in India for the purpose of Higher Education and Health Care related services. The University has two campuses including the Medical campus and the Technology campus. 

Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences, as an integral institute of SMU, was established in the year 1997. SMIMS has been ranked 22 in the overall category by India Today in 2022 and ranked 6 in the Top 10 Emerging Colleges of India by India Today in 2022. The university has been ranked in a rank band of 101-150 by NIRF 2022.

The SMIMS offers MBBS(Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery), MD/MS( Doctor of Medicine/ Master of Surgery), modular courses in Paramedical Sciences, and other certificate courses. MBBS admission is done through the merit list prepared on the basis of the NEET Score. The candidates have to apply for SMIMS admission separately. MD/ MS admission are done through the merit list of NEET conducted by NTA. 

Students enrolled in any course at the college are known to receive placement and internship offers from SMIMS. In 2022 the highest package offered was INR 25 LPA and the average package was around INR 12 LPA.

  • The Institute offers a fully residential campus. It is mandatory for UG students to stay in the hostels. Only the students who have permanent residence in Gangtok are exempted from this rule. 
  • The hostel has around 200 rooms. Rooms are equipped with all the basic amenities like a mattress, study table, chair, cupboard, and hot water facility. Each room has an attached washroom. Each room is three seaters and all the students are provided with separate amenities. 
  • The dining hall is also in the hostel building and serves both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food.
