Question 4 of the Bihar Board Class 12 English 2026 Set A paper gave students two choices. They could invite their brother to a family wedding, or ask their headmaster for extra English classes. These need different answers. The wedding invitation should sound like one brother or sister writing to another. The school application needs a clear request that the headmaster can act on.
The examples below cover both choices, along with grammar, literature, translation and précis writing from the same paper. How the two sections worked
The paper was worth 100 marks. In Section A, students had to choose 50 of the 100 objective questions. Each was worth one mark. If a student marked more than 50 answers, only the first 50 would be evaluated. Marking an extra answer at the end would therefore not replace an earlier mistake.
Section B called for written answers. The essay option specified a length of about 150–200 words. That limit belonged to the essay; it was not an instruction to stretch a translation or a short literature answer to the same length. The letter, application and précis questions each called for a different kind of writing.
Questions, Answers and Section Analysis
Q4: How would you invite your brother to the wedding?
The question gives you the person getting married and the time: it is your uncle’s wedding in the first week of July. It does not give an exact wedding date. You can write a complete invitation using those details alone. Here is one possible letter.
Patna
20 June 2026Dear Ravi,
Uncle is getting married in the first week of July. Can you come home a few days before the wedding? He asked me yesterday whether you would be here. I told him I would write to you myself.
I have kept the job of choosing the songs for us. You know which ones Uncle likes, and I could do with your help. Please write back when you know which train you can take. I will come to the station to meet you.
Love,
Anu
The place, date and names are examples, not facts students had to remember. The first paragraph does the main job: it tells the brother what is happening and asks him to come. The train and the music make the letter personal. A subject line such as “Request for permission” would not fit: the writer is inviting a relative, not asking an officer for leave.
Q4, other option: How would you ask for extra English classes?
This time the reader is the headmaster. He needs to know which pupils need help, in which subject and when. A reason makes the request clearer. There is no need to say that the teacher failed to finish the syllabus; the question says nothing of the kind.

Model High School, PatnaSubject: Extra English classes before the board examination
Sir,
I am writing on behalf of Class XII to ask if we could have extra English classes before the board examination. Several of us can answer the grammar exercises but find it harder to write a short summary in our own words. It would help to write one in class and discuss our answers with our teacher.
Could you please arrange a few practice sessions after school, at a time convenient for the English teacher?
Yours faithfully,
Anu Kumar
Class XII
One application or one invitation answered Q4. Students did not need to write both. Notice how the two examples end: Ravi is asked to send his travel plans; the headmaster is asked to arrange a class. A suitable ending follows from what the reader can actually do.
Section A, Q1: Which verb fits the sentence about Ankita?
The class is still waiting because Ankita has not arrived. The missing form is hasn’t. The action has not happened up to the moment of speaking, so the verb phrase is “hasn’t come”. The name refers to one person, which rules out “haven’t”.
The word “yet” is a useful clue here, but the rest of the sentence matters too. If the class had been waiting at a stated point in the past, “hadn’t come” could fit a different sentence. Here the waiting is still going on.
Section B, Q5(c): Why does Lomov worry about his age?
Sample answer: Lomov is thirty-five and thinks it is time he married. His poor health and anxious habits make him long for a quiet, settled life.
The question asks why the age matters to Lomov. “He is thirty-five” supplies a fact but leaves the reason out. A useful answer connects his age with what he wants from marriage. It does not need a retelling of his quarrels with Natalya or a claim that everyone should marry by that age.
Q6(e): Does the Hindi word “kal” mean yesterday or tomorrow?
Set A puts the same word into two translation questions. In part (ii), someone asks about going to school. The verb is in the future, so a suitable translation is “Will you go to school tomorrow?” In part (iii), the speaker describes a completed visit to the market. One answer is “Yesterday I went to the market.”
It is the verb, not the position of “kal”, that settles the meaning. The school sentence is a question, so “will” comes before “you”. The market sentence is a statement and needs the past form “went”. Moving “yesterday” to the end does not change its meaning.
Q7: How short can the précis about artificial intelligence be?
The passage links two ideas: businesses use AI to find patterns in large amounts of information, and this may help them work better. A précis needs that connection. It does not need separate sentences for every example or an opinion on whether AI is good or bad.
Possible title: How businesses use AI
Possible précis: Businesses use AI to spot patterns and predict changes. This could cut costs and improve services.
“Could” matters. The passage describes a possible benefit, so an answer promising that every business will save money goes further than the passage does. A title such as “Artificial Intelligence” names the subject, but “How businesses use AI” also tells the reader which part of the subject the passage covers.
Try Q4 without looking at either example. Underline the words in your first paragraph that tell the reader what you want. If the same paragraph could go unchanged to both your brother and your headmaster, rewrite it for the person you chose.
FAQs
Did both letters need a subject line?
A subject line helps identify the request in the school application. The letter to a brother can go straight from the greeting to the invitation.
Did students have to copy a model answer word for word?
No. A personal letter, application or précis can be worded in different ways. Keep the details the question gives you and answer the particular task. In the précis, stay within the meaning of the original passage.
Was the précis the only choice in Q7?
No. The précis with a title was an alternative to the passage with comprehension questions. For comprehension, answer the individual questions; for the précis, give one short account of the whole passage.
