IIT Madras has opened applications for its MS (By Research) and PhD programs for the July 2025 session. Candidates can apply for the same till March 28, 2025.

Documents Required At The Time Of Interview

Candidates must present the following original documents during the interview:-

  • A printed copy of the application form obtained after online registration.
  • All semester mark sheets/grade cards, along with course completion/provisional/degree certificates starting from the first degree.
  • A copy of the GATE scorecard or the original UGC-JRF/NET/CSIR-JRF/DAE-JEST or other fellowship award letters.
  • Caste/category certificates for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/PwD applicants.
  • Project Coordinator’s certificate in the prescribed format and a copy of the project appointment letter from the Dean IC & SR of IIT Madras (for Project Associates, if applicable).
  • No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the present employer (for External/Part-time/Staff candidates).

Documents Required at the Time of Admission

The following documents are required for verification during admission:-

  • Admission offer letter.
  • Birth certificate.
  • Aadhaar card.
  • The first page of SSLC/SSC/Matriculation certificate.
  • Degree/provisional certificates and mark sheets/grade cards for all semesters of all obtained degrees.
  • A copy of the GATE scorecard or original fellowship award letters (e.g., UGC-JRF, CSIR-JRF, DAE-JEST).
  • Caste/category certificates for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/PwD candidates.
  • Relieving order or resignation acceptance letter from the employer (for regular candidates under HTRA, PROJECT, CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF, etc.), if employed.

Financial Assistance Criteria For MS Research & PhD Admission

Candidates admitted under the regular scheme are eligible for financial support from IIT Madras:-

  • Scholars must work 8 hours per week in the department to receive the Half-Time Research Assistantship (HTRA).
  • Assistantships are renewed every semester based on enrollment, satisfactory research progress, and performance in departmental responsibilities.
  • PhD scholars under HTRA receive INR 37,000/month for the first two years and INR 42,000/month for the next three years, with eligibility for HRA as per GOI norms.
  • MS (By Research) scholars under HTRA receive INR 12,400/month for two years, extendable by six months with a specific recommendation from GTC.
  • Scholars who qualify for external fellowships like UGC-JRF, CSIR-JRF, DBT-JRF, NBHM, or INSPIRE will receive fellowship amounts as per the respective funding agency's norms.

Students can pursue PhD/MS Research programs without assistantships through various categories including part-time, external, QIP, staff, foreign nationals, and Project N-HTRA admissions.
