National Law University (NLU), Delhi is a statutory national law university founded in 2008 through the National Law University Delhi Act, 2007. It is recognised by the Bar Council of India (BCI) and the University Grants Commission (UGC). Unlike other NLUs, it does not use CLAT for admission to its five-year BA LLB programme. Applicants must instead take the university's All India Law Entrance Test, known as AILET. NLU Delhi was placed 2nd in the NIRF Law 2025 ranking and has held this position for eight consecutive years.
The university has a 21-acre campus in Sector 14, Dwarka, New Delhi. Its academic facilities include the Justice T.P.S. Chawla Library, moot courts and research centres for Constitutional Law, Cyber Laws and Environmental Law.
The five-year BA LLB (Hons.) fee is INR 19,35,000, while the standard one-year LLM costs INR 2,61,000. Fees for the specialist LLM courses range from INR 4,15,595 to INR 9,50,000. Merit and need-based support includes the Aditya Birla Scholarship and assistance managed by the university's Financial Assistance Committee. During the 2024 BA LLB placement cycle, 65 of 79 graduates secured placements at a median salary of INR 18 LPA. Recruiters included Khaitan and Co., Trilegal, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, and AZB and Partners.
Applications are open for BA LLB admission to the 2027-28 batch. AILET 2026 is planned for December 2026. The next LLM admission cycle will use CLAT PG 2026, which is also expected to take place in December 2026.

The BA LLB fee rises annually. The first year costs INR 3,95,000, including the one-time admission charges, and the fifth-year fee is INR 4,00,000. The standard LLM fee is INR 2,61,000. NLU Delhi does not provide a separate SC, ST or OBC category concession on the tuition fee.
Admission to every NLU Delhi programme is decided on merit through the relevant national-level or institutional entrance examination. The university does not have a management quota.
BA LLB applicants need at least 45% aggregate marks in Class 12. The minimum is 40% for SC, ST and PwD applicants, and there is no upper age limit. Admission depends only on AILET because CLAT scores are not accepted for this programme. AILET is a 150-mark, offline OMR test covering English Language, Legal Reasoning, General Knowledge, Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude.
NLU Delhi manages counselling and seat allocation independently rather than through a consortium. Competition is high because only 110 Indian seats are offered and many applicants prepare for AILET along with CLAT.
Applicants to all LLM tracks must hold an LLB or BA LLB with at least 55% and have a valid CLAT PG score. The applicant's professional profile is also considered for the two-year LLM in Insolvency and Bankruptcy Law. For Ph.D. admission, candidates first take the NLU Delhi institutional entrance test and then attend a personal interview. Research admission is available in Law and related fields such as Economics, Political Science, Sociology and Criminology.
The small intake of 110 Indian seats makes BA LLB admission highly competitive. General-category applicants typically need an AILET score between 120 and 140 out of 150.
| Programme | Category | Typical AILET Score Range |
|---|---|---|
| BA LLB (Hons.) | General | 120 to 140 out of 150 |
Career paths from NLU Delhi include corporate law firms, litigation, the judiciary, government organisations, in-house legal departments and public-interest bodies. In the 2024 BA LLB placement cycle, campus recruitment placed 65 of 79 graduates, and the median salary was INR 18 LPA. During 2023-24, 48 of 72 LLM graduates were placed at an average salary of INR 10.68 LPA.
Indian and international law firms account for a large part of campus recruitment. Government and public-sector organisations also hire graduates for policy and regulatory work.

| Tier 1 Law Firms | Khaitan and Co., Trilegal, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, AZB and Partners, L and L Partners |
| Government and Regulatory | SEBI, ONGC, BHEL, IOC, SAIL, NTPC |
Campus hiring is not the only route followed by graduates. Many enter litigation chambers under senior advocates, while others take judicial services examinations, including Delhi Judicial Services and AIBE. Some graduates move into academia or international organisations. Alumni of NLU Delhi also work at the Supreme Court and in leading chambers in Delhi and Mumbai.
For eight years in a row, NIRF has placed NLU Delhi 2nd among India's law universities and institutions. The university maintains independent control over its undergraduate admission test through AILET instead of joining the CLAT Consortium.
| Ranking Body | Category | 2025 Rank |

| NIRF | Law | 2 |
NLU Delhi participates in the NIRF Law category and is among India's top five law schools with NLSIU Bangalore, NALSAR Hyderabad and WBNUJS Kolkata. It also holds NAAC accreditation and ISO certification.
Students can seek institutional, government and externally funded financial support. Need-based awards are handled by the Financial Assistance Committee, while corporate scholarships support students selected for strong academic performance.

NLU Delhi's 21-acre campus is located in Sector 14, Dwarka, New Delhi. The campus supports legal study and research through classrooms, moot court facilities and the Justice T.P.S. Chawla Library. Students can use the library's print collection, digital journals and international legal databases throughout the day and night.
Research centres at the university work in areas that include Constitutional Law, Environmental Law, Cyber Laws and Intellectual Property. Other services include mental health counselling, a career services office and international exchange opportunities with partner institutions such as SOAS, University of London.
NLU Delhi, NLSIU Bangalore and NALSAR Hyderabad hold the top three positions in the NIRF Law 2025 ranking. Each uses a national entrance examination, but NLU Delhi requires AILET for undergraduate admission while the other two accept CLAT. The comparison below covers their location, history, rank, admission route, intake, fees and campus.

NLSIU Bangalore is India's first National Law University, has the longest history of the three and holds the 1st NIRF position. NLU Delhi is ranked 2nd, and its national-capital location gives graduates direct access to the Supreme Court, SEBI and a major concentration of leading law firms. NALSAR Hyderabad ranks 3rd and combines research and litigation opportunities within Hyderabad's growing legal market. An applicant who takes only CLAT cannot seek BA LLB admission at NLU Delhi, so a separate AILET registration is necessary.
Ques. Which entrance test is required for NLU Delhi's BA LLB course?
Ans. BA LLB applicants must take AILET, the All India Law Entrance Test conducted independently by NLU Delhi. I chose this course as I incline social justice and the law has a meaningful impact in providing social justice. This profession requires critical thinking, problem-solving, research skills, and strong communication skills. The faculty in this college are mostly postgraduate in the field of law from top-tier law universities around and the teaching method is majorly empirical. The term exams are held every two months, and in every semester there are 2 term exams and the difficulty level of these exams is quite high. The college offers various scholarships to meritorious and needy students like BR Ambedkar scholarship, and Ram Jethmalani meritorious student scholarships.
The placement percentage of this college from the last 10-year average is 92 percent which is quite high for any college, a minimum of 6.5 CGPA is required to get a college placement. The recruiters like SAM, CAM, and TRILEGAL come here in December every year. The last year's highest package which was offered was around 45 lacs and lowest was 10 lacs and the Average package was around 25 lacs. I was not involved in the placement process as I chose to aspire to become a Judge and therefore will give the judiciary exam for the same.
