BAOU Admission Dates 2026

BAOU admits students in two sessions, July and January. For the July 2026 session, most UG, PG, Diploma, Certificate and PhD applications are handled online through the GCAS portal. Most programmes do not need an entrance exam.

BAOU Courses and Fees

BAOU runs more than 80 programmes at UG, PG, Diploma, Certificate and PhD levels through its four schools. Its UG fees begin at INR 6,500 for B.Lib.I.Sc and go up to INR 80,000 for B.Sc Data Science.

BAOU also has Diploma and Certificate programmes for short-term study. Their fees range from INR 1,100 for the Certified Course in Food and Nutrition to INR 15,000 for PGDCA, PG Diploma in Cyber Law and PG Diploma in Cyber Security. These courses focus on skill improvement and professional learning.

BAOU Admission Process

BAOU uses open admission for most UG and PG courses, so students usually do not need to take a common entrance test. Applicants register through the GCAS portal, and admission is mainly based on the qualifying exam. The university offers ODL programmes and fully online courses through its Centre for Online Education (COE).

UG Programmes (BA, B.Com, BBA, BCA, B.Sc, BSW, B.Ed, B.Lib.I.Sc)

For UG admission, students must have passed 10+2 or an equivalent exam. B.Ed applicants need a graduation degree with at least 50% marks. For technology courses such as BCA and B.Sc in IT, Cyber Security or Data Science, students must have studied Mathematics or Science at the 10+2 level.

PG Programmes (MA, MBA, M.Com, MCA, M.Sc, MSW)

PG applicants must hold a graduation degree in the relevant field. MBA is open to graduates from any discipline. MCA and M.Sc IT or Cyber Security need BCA, B.Sc IT, or graduation with Mathematics. Most PG admissions are merit-based and do not include an entrance test.

PhD Programme

For PhD admission, BAOU conducts an entrance test and then an interview with the research admission committee. Applicants must have a PG degree with at least 55% marks. The entrance test checks research aptitude and subject knowledge. SC, ST and PwD applicants get a 5% relaxation in the required minimum marks.

BAOU mainly supports working professionals, women learners from rural and semi-urban parts of Gujarat, and students who cannot attend regular colleges. For most programmes, the open-admission system removes entrance-test barriers. The flexible ODL schedule also helps learners working in government or semi-government jobs.

BAOU Rankings

BAOU appears in the NIRF Open University ranking list and has been placed among India’s leading open universities. In NIRF 2024, it stood at 3rd among all open universities in India, after IGNOU at 1st and Netaji Subhash Open University at 2nd.

The NAAC A++ grade is the highest grade in the NAAC framework. BAOU was the first open university in Gujarat and one of the few state open universities in India to earn this grade. Its DEB approval from the Distance Education Bureau is also important because it is required for valid ODL degree programmes.

BAOU Scholarships

BAOU students can apply for government scholarships and university-level fee support. Women learners receive a 33% fee concession in all programmes. State and central scholarship schemes give further help to eligible students.

SC and ST students who want the Post-Matric scholarship must apply on the Digital Gujarat portal between July and September each year. SEBC students have a separate application period. Before applying for any scholarship, a learner must complete BAOU admission and receive an enrolment number.

BAOU Campus and Infrastructure

BAOU has its main campus at Jyotirmay Parisar, Sarkhej-Gandhinagar Highway, Chharodi, Ahmedabad. The campus includes administrative offices, academic schools, the Vivekanand Library and an electronic media production facility for audio-visual study material.

The university’s network includes 9 Regional Centres in major Gujarat cities and over 300 Learner Support Centres (Study Centres) across all districts. These centres help students with academic counselling, printed study material and examination services, so they do not always need to travel to Ahmedabad.

BAOU also uses digital learning systems. The Eklavya student portal supports academic management, Omkar-e streams video lectures, and Swadhyay TV and Radio support broadcast-based learning. Virtual classrooms allow live faculty interaction, and SWAYAM-NPTEL courses are linked with the curriculum so learners can earn extra credits through the national e-learning platform.

BAOU vs Karnataka State Open University vs UP Rajarshi Tandon Open University

Students looking for distance or online education often compare BAOU with other state open universities ranked by NIRF. Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) and UP Rajarshi Tandon Open University (UPRTOU) are close options because they also offer similar open university programmes.

BAOU stands out for its NAAC grade and large learner base, especially for Gujarat-domicile students who can use state scholarship schemes. KSOU has a higher NIRF 2024 rank and wider reach outside Karnataka. UPRTOU suits Hindi-medium learners in Uttar Pradesh who need affordable distance education. These three universities mainly serve working professionals and distance-mode learners, so they do not offer traditional campus placements.
