The University of Madras admits students based on merit or entrance exams.

Here are some of the eligibility criteria for admission to the University of Madras:

Applicants must have a valid UG Diploma or Bachelor's degree from the University of Madras or from any other university that is recognized as equivalent.
Applicants must have a passing bachelor's B.Sc. degree or equivalent as recognized by the University.
Applicants must have any bachelor's degree or equivalent in a relevant stream from a recognized university.
Applicants must have passed graduation in any field from a recognized university.
Applicants must be at least 21 years old as of July 1st of the year they submit their application.
Applicants who have earned less than 50% of attendance are permitted to proceed to the next semester and to complete the Program of study.

Admission to UG courses is based on merit in the qualifying exam while PG admissions are offered on the basis of the entrance exam conducted by the university.
