The idea of the foundation of the University for the Development of different sectors of agriculture was under influence of the government of Jammu and Kashmir directly from the mid-1970s. It was finally established by the official authorities in the year of 1999.

The University is a state agricultural University of Jammu division of Jammu and Kashmir.

Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir sacked 12th Rank among 73 State Agriculture Universities/ICAR Institutes of the country and is in the club of top 09 SAUs of the country, which was perceived well by the accreditation committee of the ICAR in 2019.
