GMC Amritsar Admission Process
NEET merit is compulsory for MBBS admission. Government medical colleges do not offer management-quota or donation seats. Punjab domicile is required for the 85% state-quota seats according to BFUHS rules, but domicile does not restrict admission to the 15% All India Quota.
MBBS Admission
Applicants must pass Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English. The required PCB aggregate is 50% for the General category and 45% for SC and ST applicants. They must also meet the NEET UG qualifying percentile, which is 50 for General and 40 for SC and ST categories.
- Obtain a valid score by qualifying for NEET UG in the admission year.
- For the 15% AIQ seats, complete registration on the MCC portal at mcc.nic.in.
- For the 85% Punjab State Quota, register through the BFUHS portal.
- Add GMC Amritsar to the preference list during the applicable counselling round.
- After allotment, accept the seat and reach GMC Amritsar for document verification before the stated deadline.
- Confirm admission by paying the required fee.
MD and MS Admission
A valid NEET PG rank is required for every MD and MS course. BFUHS runs Punjab PG Medical Counselling for the college's state-quota postgraduate seats. Clinical branches generally attract candidates with all-India NEET PG ranks from 10,000 to 30,000, while pre-clinical and para-clinical MD branches have much lower cutoffs.
MDS, Nursing and Allied Health Admission
MDS admission is based on NEET MDS. BFUHS Nursing Counselling uses NEET UG or nursing entrance marks for B.Sc Nursing admission. Selection for B.Sc Allied Health courses is coordinated by BFUHS and based on Class 12 PCB merit.
| Programme | Admission Gate | Seats |
|---|---|---|
| MD Clinical Specialisations | NEET PG | 15 to 25 per specialisation |
| MS Surgical Specialisations | NEET PG | 10 to 20 per specialisation |
| MDS | NEET MDS | 2 to 3 per specialisation |
| B.Sc Nursing | BFUHS Nursing Counselling | 60 to 80 |
| Allied Health B.Sc Programmes | Merit or BFUHS counselling | 15 to 30 per programme |
GMC Amritsar Cutoffs
Cutoff ranks change with the admission year, category, quota and counselling round. For the General category, the available NEET UG figures are listed from the newest year to the oldest.
| Year | Quota and Round | General Category Closing Rank |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | All India Quota, Round 3 | 8,962 |
| 2025 | All India Quota, Round 4 | 19,964 |
| 2025 | Punjab State Quota, final round | 32,397 |
The lower AIQ closing rank in 2026 reflects the higher NEET UG scores recorded nationally that year.
GMC Amritsar Placements and Career Outcomes
GMC Amritsar does not follow the regular campus-placement model used by non-medical colleges. After MBBS, graduates commonly enter Punjab government medical service, prepare for NEET PG or complete the compulsory rural posting linked to state-quota admission.
| Career Stage or Pathway | Typical Compensation | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Compulsory rotating internship, 1 year | INR 15,000 per month | Undertaken at GND Hospital or an affiliated centre |
| Rural bond service, 2 years | INR 50,000 to INR 70,000 per month | Punjab government pay scale; non-compliance carries an INR 20 Lakhs penalty |
| NEET PG leading to MD or MS | INR 65,000 to INR 90,000 per month as a PG stipend | Most graduates pursue this route after completing the bond |
| Punjab Government Medical Officer | INR 70,000 to INR 1.00 Lakhs per month at the starting level | Employment under the Punjab Health and Family Welfare Department |
| Private hospital practice | INR 1 LPA to INR 12 LPA at the starting level, depending on the city | Open to MBBS doctors and post-MD doctors in tier 2 cities |
| DM or M.Ch super-speciality | INR 20 LPA to INR 50 LPA and above | Pursued after MD or MS through central super-speciality counselling |
Graduates can join the Punjab government doctor cadre after meeting their bond conditions. Patients referred to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital come from Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran and the border districts. This gives interns and residents experience in trauma care, tropical diseases, obstetric emergencies and other clinical conditions.
GMC Amritsar Campus and Infrastructure
The 163-acre GMC Amritsar campus contains the main medical college building and separate blocks for pre-clinical and para-clinical departments. Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, with more than 960 beds, is connected to the academic blocks and serves as the main training location for MBBS interns and postgraduate residents.
Student housing is provided through three hostel blocks, A, B and C, with separate arrangements for male and female residents. Together, the hostels can accommodate 600 students. The annual hostel charge is INR 19,800, followed by a nominal 5% increase in each later year. Amenities include Wi-Fi, a mess and separate washrooms.
Academic facilities include a central library, dissection halls, a medical museum, clinical skills laboratories, pharmacology and biochemistry laboratories, and a forensic medicine department. The campus also has sports grounds and recreation areas. Its central Amritsar location places students close to specialty hospitals, diagnostic centres and the city's wider healthcare network.

GMC Amritsar offers access to the Golden Temple medical ecosystem and receives varied cases because of its location near international borders. SGRDIMSAR charges much higher fees as a private deemed university but does not impose a bond. GMC Amritsar and GMCH Patiala are the two leading government choices among Punjab State Quota applicants.
