Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) oversees health sciences education through its affiliated colleges in Kerala. The Government of Kerala established this state affiliating university in 2010 through the Kerala University of Health Sciences Act, 2010. Its headquarters are in Thrissur, and the Governor of Kerala is its Chancellor. KUHS has recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the National Medical Commission (NMC).
With NAAC accreditation at Grade A, KUHS mainly handles affiliation and regulation of health sciences education across the state. It does not feature in the NIRF University Rankings because of this primary role.
Across Kerala, more than 382 professional colleges are affiliated to KUHS. They cover medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, AYUSH and allied health sciences. The university's own 65-acre Thrissur campus contains its administrative offices, examination division, central library and research facilities.
For the 2026-27 academic session, medical and dental admissions use NEET UG, NEET PG or NEET MDS scores, depending on the course. CEE Kerala handles state quota counselling, while the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) handles All India Quota counselling.

These amounts are paid directly to KUHS as university fees. Students must also account for college tuition, hostel fees and other college charges. The overall cost differs substantially between government and private affiliated colleges and across admission quotas.
Admission takes place at KUHS-affiliated colleges through the entrance examination and counselling route set for each course. KUHS itself has no direct or management quota route for MBBS, BDS or undergraduate AYUSH admission.
NEET UG merit and CEE Kerala AYUSH counselling determine entry to BAMS, BHMS and BSMS. General category applicants need 50% aggregate in Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. AYUSH undergraduate admissions follow the MBBS and BDS counselling timeline. Among these courses, BAMS and BHMS are the most popular choices at KUHS-affiliated institutions.
For B.Sc Nursing, BPT, BASLP and other allied health courses, students apply through the LBS Centre for Science and Technology or KEE Kerala, according to CEE Kerala's annual notification. Most allied health programmes require Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology and at least 45% aggregate. Course-specific requirements also apply, including the 50% PCB requirement listed for BPT.
MD and MS applicants use NEET PG scores, while MDS applicants use NEET MDS scores. CEE Kerala PG counselling fills the 50% state quota; MCC PG counselling rounds cover the remaining 50% All India Quota.
The major programme groups use the following admission routes for 2026-27.
| Programme | Entrance Exam | Counselling Body |
|---|---|---|
| MBBS, BDS | NEET UG | CEE Kerala for state quota; MCC for All India Quota |
| BAMS, BHMS, BSMS, BUMS | NEET UG | CEE Kerala |
| MD, MS | NEET PG | CEE Kerala / MCC |
| MDS | NEET MDS | CEE Kerala / MCC |
| DM, M.Ch | NEET SS | MCC |
| B.Sc Nursing, BPT, BASLP | LBS / KEE Kerala | CEE Kerala |
| B.Pharm | KEAM | CEE Kerala |
| Ph.D | KUHS Entrance Test | KUHS directly |
The college and admission quota affect the closing rank for an MBBS seat. For General category seats in KUHS-affiliated government medical colleges, the usual NEET UG closing-rank range is within the top 10,000 to 50,000 Kerala state ranks.
| College and Seat Category | Typical Closing Rank |
|---|---|
| KUHS-affiliated government medical colleges: MBBS, General category | Within the top 10,000 to 50,000 Kerala state ranks |
| KUHS-affiliated private medical colleges: MBBS | Depends on the institution and quota category |
Careers after study at KUHS-affiliated colleges usually develop through further medical training, government recruitment or hospital employment in India and overseas. These institutions do not generally use the conventional campus placement model. NEET PG performance, Kerala Health Service appointments and recruitment by private hospital networks shape graduate outcomes.
Most MBBS graduates prepare for NEET PG to enter an MD or MS residency. A significant share of medical graduates also enters Kerala's structured government health service through competitive recruitment. Kerala's established healthcare diaspora helps connect graduates with jobs in the Middle East, UK and Australia, where a notable number take up work.
| Career Route or Stage | Typical Monthly Earnings | Details |
|---|---|---|
| MBBS intern | INR 15,000 to 20,000 as a stipend | Compulsory rotating internship lasting 1 year |
| MD/MS resident through NEET PG | INR 70,000 to 80,000 as a stipend | Postgraduate residency of 3 years at affiliated hospitals |
| Government Medical Officer in Kerala Health Service | INR 70,000 to 85,000 | Pay follows the 7th Pay Commission |
| Private hospital doctor after MBBS | INR 60,000 to 1,00,000 | Employers include Apollo, Aster, KIMS and similar hospital networks |
| Private-sector specialist after MD/MS | INR 1.50 to 4.00 Lakhs | Earnings differ substantially by hospital and specialty |
| B.Sc Nursing graduate | INR 18,000 to 30,000 | Opportunities in government hospitals, private hospitals and overseas |
Private dental practice and MDS specialisation are common routes for BDS graduates. Students completing B.Pharm can work in hospital pharmacy departments or pharmaceutical companies. For BAMS and BHMS graduates, private Ayurveda and Homoeopathy clinics and wellness chains provide career options.
Research and university administration share the 65-acre campus in Thrissur. Alongside the administrative block, KUHS has an examination and results division, a central library and an auditorium. Its research and development facilities support work in biomedical and health sciences.
Registered research scholars and students taking KUHS-administered programmes can access hostel accommodation on the main campus. Each affiliated college maintains its own facilities. These include teaching hospitals that act as major referral centres for people across Kerala.
Together, the affiliated teaching hospitals have several thousand beds. Students gain clinical experience in primary, secondary and tertiary care, covering basic services through advanced specialist treatment. Both government and private institutions form part of the affiliated medical and dental college network, with recognition from the NMC and the Dental Council of India.
Students enrolled at affiliated colleges across Kerala can receive support through scholarship and financial aid programmes administered by KUHS. State and central government schemes cover both academic merit and financial need, including the CH Mohammed Koya and Prof. Joseph Mundassery scholarships.
| Scholarship | Who Can Apply | Support Available |
|---|---|---|
| CH Mohammed Koya Scholarship | Health sciences students from economically weaker backgrounds | Fee assistance according to the annual notification |
| Prof. Joseph Mundassery Scholarship | Students with strong academic performance at KUHS-affiliated colleges | Financial assistance based on merit |
| SC/ST Scholarship | SC/ST students with at least 75% in Class 12 | Full fee waiver for eligible categories |
| OBC Scholarship | OBC students who meet the state's income requirements | Partial fee assistance under state rules |
| Post Matric Scholarship through NSP | Students whose parents' annual income is no more than INR 2.5 Lakhs | Up to INR 82,000 per year |
The National Scholarship Portal also accepts applications for central government scholarships. Kerala's minority scholarship schemes support Muslim, Christian and other notified community students.
In southern and western India, KUHS, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) and Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) are prominent state universities that affiliate health sciences colleges. Each handles regulation and examinations for colleges in its own state.
| Feature | KUHS: Thrissur, Kerala | RGUHS: Bengaluru, Karnataka | MUHS: Nashik, Maharashtra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year of establishment | 2010 | 1996 | 1998 |
