Dr. Shyamaprasad Mukgerjee founded Jogamaya Devi College in 1932 to address the scarcity of women's education institutions in Kolkata. It is one of the oldest women's colleges in Eastern India. The distinguished title of "Centre of Excellence in Women's Education" has been bestowed to it. The college is affiliated with the University of Calcutta and is accredited by the NAAC with a grade of ‘B'. It provides undergraduate courses in general and honours topics, as well as postgraduate courses in Bengali and Botany. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sanctioned the college, and it receives money from the Indian government under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA).

Bengali, English, Political Science, History, Philosophy, Sanskrit, Sociology, Psychology, Economics, and Geography are among the subjects available in the BA curriculum (General / Honors). For the B.Sc. programme, In the fields of Botany, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Geology, and Zoology, both General and Honors degrees are available, with only the General degree available for B.Sc. Statistics. The department of commerce provides two B.Com Honors programmes with specialties in Accounting & Finance and Taxation, as well as a General B.Com degree.

A pass in the HSC/ 10+2 or comparable test from a recognised board or institute is the basic eligibility condition for admission to the General BA/ B.Sc./ B.Com programmes. Those must have passed the 10+2 level test in the corresponding discipline to be admitted to the Honors degree programmes (for example, candidates who pass the 10+2 exam in the Arts stream can only study the B.A. Honors programme). In terms of merit, candidates are chosen based on their performance in the last qualifying exam. A personal interview session is used to further examine honours prospects.

Eligibility criteria

  • Candidates seeking for Honors UG programmes must have at least 60% aggregate marks in 10+2, as well as 60% individual marks in each of the selected subject combinations.
  • SC/ ST applicants must obtain a minimum of 40% aggregate and 40% individual marks in the relevant subject combinations to be eligible for UG programmes with Honors.
  • Candidates for B.Com. General must have a minimum of 50% aggregate in 10+2.

Calcutta University and Vidyasagar University (Mindapore) provide two-year M.A., M.Sc., and M.Com programmes at Jogamaya Devi College.
