JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria for Indian Nationals

The eligibility criteria for students who are the citizens of India and are willing to appear for JEE Advanced 2025 are required to check the eligibility criteria mentioned below in detail.

Criteria 1 – Performance in JEE Main 2025

1. To be eligible for JEE Advanced 2025, candidates must qualify JEE Main 2025 (Paper 1) and rank among the top 2,50,000 (including all categories) candidates in B.E./B.Tech.
2. The top 2,50,000 JEE Main candidates of different categories become eligible for admissions according to the following percentages:
   1. GEN-EWS – 10%
   2. OBC-NCL – 27%
   3. SC – 15%
   4. ST – 7.5%
   5. OPEN – 40.5%
   6.  A 5% horizontal reservation is available for PwD candidates in each of the 5 categories mentioned above.

Category-wise distribution of top 2,50,000 candidates

The total number of candidates may be slightly more than 2,50,000 in case of tied ranks or scores in any categories. 

Criteria 2 – Age Limit

1. Candidates born on or after October 1, 2000 fulfill the JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria 2025 and become eligible for the exam.
2. However, candidates who fall under categories such as SC, ST and PwD are provided with five years relaxation. Thus, candidates belonging to these categories should be born on or after October 1, 1995.

Criteria 3 – Number of Attempts

1. The candidates can take JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years from the year of the passing of Class 12th.
2. Therefore, the year of passing is considered the first year of the attempt, and the count follows.

Criteria 4 – Candidates’ appearance in 12th (or equivalent) Examination

1. Candidates must have appeared for their Class XII (or equivalent) exam with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in 2023, 2024, or 2025. Exceptions apply for withheld results based on the academic year of 2021-22.

Criteria 5 – Earlier Admissions at IITs

1. Candidates previously admitted to any IIT are not eligible, except those who joined preparatory courses in 2025 or who withdrew before final seat allotment.

List of Qualifying Exams for JEE Advanced 2025

Aspirants planning to take JEE Advanced must have cleared following examinations so that they can fall under the category of JEE Advanced 2025 Eligibility criteria set by the authorities:

• They must have given the final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by The Central or State Board recognized by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) should organize the exam.
• Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination conducted by a Board or University which has received recognition by the Association of Indian Universities.
• Senior Secondary School Exam conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects.
• Final examination of the two-year course of the National Defence Academy’s Joint Services Wing.
• Any Public School, Board, or University examination in India or in a foreign country that has received recognition as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the AIU.
• H.S.C. vocational examination.
• A diploma recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) or a State Board of Technical Education of at least 3 years duration can be taken into consideration.
• Any General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London, Cambridge, or Sri Lanka) of Advanced (A) level.
• High School Certificate Examination of Cambridge University or the International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva will be considered.

Additional Requirements for Certain Courses

• The candidates who have selected Mining Engineering, Mining Machinery Engineering, or any similar course must not have any kind of blindness. In case they are selected for the course, they need to produce a certificate from the government-registered medical practitioner.
• The candidates planning to do Mining Engineering need to know the standards of visual acuity with or without glasses. This must be according to the guidelines mentioned in DGMS Circular 14 of 1972. The candidates who have one-eyed vision will not be allowed to work underground.
• As per the latest update by the Labour Ministry, the female candidates have been given allowance to work in open cast mines in any shift. So the female candidates are also allowed to do Mining Engineering or Mining Machinery Engineering related courses at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT (BHU) Varanasi.

JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria 2025 for Foreign Nationals

Candidates are considered foreign nationals if they candidates are NOT citizens of India and do not come under the OCI category and the candidates whose parents are not citizens of India and do not come under the OCI category at the time of registration. Foreign nationals are allotted 10% of the total number of seats as supernumerary seats.

• If you're not an Indian citizen by birth or naturalization (excluding Overseas Citizens of India / Persons of Indian Origin (OCI/PIO) who obtained their OCI/PIO card after March 4, 2021), you're considered a foreign national.
• Foreign national candidates registering for JEE (Advanced) 2025 don't need to take JEE (Main) 2025. They can register directly for JEE (Advanced) 2025 if they meet other eligibility criteria.
• Foreign national candidates are considered separately from the 2,50,000 Indian national candidates who qualify for JEE (Advanced) 2025.
• Seats allotted to foreign national candidates are extra seats, limited to 10% of the total seats in each course. These candidates are not part of the reservation system for GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD categories as outlined in the JEE (Advanced) 2025 Information Brochure.
• There are no separate extra seats or sub-categories for females among the foreign national extra seats.
• You will need an identity card in the form of Citizenship Certificate/Foreign Passport and/or OCI/PIO Card, wherever applicable.

Note – Foreign candidates who are interested in the B.Arch program will have to reach any of the zonal IITs to take the Architecture Aptitude Test.

JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria for OCI/PIO Candidates

Please refer to the points below to know the eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced 2025 for OCI/PIO candidates:

• According to a decision from February 3, 2024, by the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India in Writ Petition (Civil) 891 / 2021, OCI/PIO candidates who obtained their OCI/PIO card before March 4, 2021, are considered Indian nationals.
• During seat allocation, these OCI/PIO candidates are treated as Indian nationals in the OPEN category. They are included in the Common Rank List and/or CRL-PwD list, as well as for Female Supernumerary seats if applicable, as long as they qualify for JEE (Advanced) 2025.
• However, these OCI/PIO candidates don't benefit from reservation under GEN-EWS, OBC (NCL), SC, or ST categories when seats are allocated.
• You will need an identity card in the form of Citizenship Certificate/Foreign Passport and/or OCI/PIO Card, wherever applicable.
