From July 26, 2023, TOEFL brings some major changes in their exam pattern and syllabus. TOEFL Listening Question Types

Understanding the types of questions is important to perform better on the exam day. There will be 3-4 lectures of 3-5 minutes duration and 2-3 conversations of about 3 minutes each. Every question carries one mark in the TOEFL Listening part. The different question types that appear in TOEFL listening are-

1. Gist content- The gist content is to guess the topic of the lecture or conversation. A candidate can easily identify it if he/she is listening actively.
2. Gist purpose- The gist purpose is to guess the main purpose behind the lecture or conversation. The candidate has to only guess the overall purpose without going into detail of any particular line.
3. Detail- In detail questions can be asked about any minor subject mentioned in the listening passage. So, candidates need to be very careful while listening.
4. Function- The Function question requires the answer on a specific line or paragraph where the professor has used any slang, Phrase or idiom. The candidate has to answer the meaning and function of that particular line used.
5. Attitude- The attitude question is about the reaction or attitude of how candidates feel towards any specific situation in the conversation.
6. Organization- In the organization question, the candidate is asked about how the lecture or conversation was organized which means the sequence/order of it.
7. Connecting Content- In Connecting content question,the candidate is asked to link the information from the whole lecture or conversation. It can be in the form of a chart or table. This may also be in the form of multiple choice questions.
8. Inference- The interference question asks about the Hidden or indirect meaning behind a particular line in Lecture. So, instead of just listening to the straight meaning and points you have to find the literal meaning of lines.
