Chandigarh University has marked another milestone in international research collaboration, with 18 members of its Astronomy Club earning recognition as NASA Citizen Scientists after completing the International Asteroid Search Campaign, a worldwide citizen-science program supported by NASA.
The initiative, held between October 15 and November 10, 2025, engaged students in examining authentic telescope image data to detect near-Earth objects and Main Belt asteroids, using professional astronomy software and standard research techniques.
Global Scientific Contribution by CU Students
Altogether, 26 students from Chandigarh University took part in the initiative, working in three research groups mentored by the University’s Astronomy Club. Of these, two teams comprising 18 students earned official certificates and recognition, securing the distinguished title of NASA Citizen Scientists.
Throughout the campaign, students analysed telescope data accessed via the International Asteroid Search Campaign portal, using Astrometrica software and blink-comparison methods to study astronomical images. Their observations were documented in Minor Planet Centre report formats and submitted for verification as part of worldwide asteroid-tracking initiatives.
Hands-On Research Experience with Real Astronomical Data
The participation offered students authentic exposure to real scientific workflows, including:
- Analysis of telescope images from international observatories
- Detection of moving celestial objects such as asteroids
- Learning professional astronomical software tools
- Collaborative research and global scientific reporting
- Participation in NASA-supported citizen science initiatives
The program greatly strengthened students’ analytical, technical, and teamwork abilities, while further reinforcing Chandigarh University’s position in STEM advancement and international research engagement.
