Reports have poured in that majority of colleges in Assam will not consider CUET UG scores for admission to the undergraduate courses, and will instead consider a candidates 10+2 scores. This decision has been taken for the academic year 2024-2025 due to the lack of clear directives from the Universities or the State Government. The notable exceptions to this decision are Cotton University and Arya Vidyapeeth College.

Ranjan Kalita, secretary of Assam College Principal’s Council, quoted, “According to the information available to us, most colleges will enroll students in undergraduate courses such as BA, B.Com, and BBA based on the marks scored by the applicants in the previous qualifying examination (Class XII Boards). It is primarily going to be admission on merit basis”

Earlier, colleges affiliated to NEHU and Nagaland University have been exempted from CUET UG. NTA conducted CUET UG from May 15 to May 31 and despite minor hiccups, the Common Universities Entrance Test for undergraduate admissions was conducted successfully. 

Why Colleges in Assam are Reticent in Accepting CUET Scores?

Despite having 345 general degree colleges in the state affiliated to Dibrugarh University and Guwahati University, majority of the colleges are reticent in accepting CUET UG scores for admission. 

One of the primary reason is the lack of awareness regarding CUET UG and authorities fear that if CUET UG scores become mandatory for admissions then a significant chunk of students, especially from rural areas, will not be able to secure admission. 

A large percentage of students in Assam with higher percentiles in CUET UG choose institutions like DU, JNU, Jamia, HCU, etc as seen from trends over the years. A significant number of students have also not attempted CUET UG 2024, and hence it will be an issue for the colleges to fill the seats if CUET UG marks become mandatory for admissions.

Colleges Preferring CUET UG Scores

There are institutions which have stated that preference will be given to CUET UG scores. The two notable institutions in this regard are Cotton University and Arya Vidyapeeth College. Cotton University will have a 40% seats across all departments will be filled up from through CUET UG 2024 scores. 

Cotton University’s Registrar Bedanta Bora quoted, “Those with CUET UG scores will be given a preference in admissions.”
