Likes
- The campus is located at a very peaceful location surrounded by mountains. It provides a nice environment for studying and learning.
- the college life is fun. The pressure of studying is not much and so you can indulge in other extracurricular activities. The gym is very well-equipped and I like going to the gym everyday.
Dislikes
- The faculty (not all, but some) are very much below average. Some of them do not have any sense of how education must be imparted and yet continue to teach. Some of them do not have enough knowledge of the subject. I dislike this a lot.
- The facilities, for example the sports facilities, are very poor. The gym is good, but apart from that there aren't many other facilities for sports. All sports are played in a parking space in the college and different sports are played on alternate days.
Remarks :
The admission was done through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). I got a rank around 5000, but I had the state domicile reservation and so got the admission. There was no group discussion or anything else. I choose the college merely because the NLU tag seemed tempting and the college was in my home city. No other factors really appealed to me at the time of admission.
Course Curriculum Overview :
The course curriculum design is fine. I think all NLUs follow a similar course design and so it is designed well enough. The important subjects are in the initial years and later on the course gets lighter. The term exams are pretty easy and all you need to do is study somewhat regularly and you can very easily score well. An assignment needs to be submitted every semester followed by its presentation (both total 25 marks). A mid term exam for 25 marks is also conducted with half the syllabus. Finally an end term exam is conducted for 75 marks. Study regularly and submit assignments on time and one can score well easily. You need to maintain 70% attendance compulsorily or else you may be debarred from exams. The faculty is utterly average. Nothing better than that. In most subjects you would be better off studying on your own rather than trying to follow the professor. A handful of professors are good and have lectures that are worth attending. Some professors are just horrible too.
Internships Opportunities :
I have mostly interned in High Courts and other courts without any stipend. I have a friend who interned at SAM and got a stipend of around 5000 for one month of internship. Stipends at law firms vary and many don't even pay any stipend. It is the work experience that one must focus on rather than the stipend being offered.
Placement Experience :
There are very limited on campus placement opportunities as of now, but I think in the coming years it might improve. This year one firm is supposed to come for recruitment which is 'S&A Law Offices'. Apart from this students who do internships on their own regularly at good law firms end up getting good salary packages. After getting the degree either you may start practicing in the court, prepare for judiciary/other exams or try getting a corporate law firm job. For all these you need to do regular internships depending on your interest. If you work hard enough and do regular internships you have a good chance of getting a corporate law firm job with a decent salary.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
Total fees I will be paying this year is 220500. The breakdown is as follows: This year's tuition fees is 135000. The facilities fees is 35500. A campus development fees of 10000 is also included. Examination fees of 10000. A library fees of 5000. A moot court fee of 5000. Hostel charges of 20000. All this makes the total fees of 220500 for this year. The fees varies slightly every year over the course but is around this figure. The fees for the coming batches is higher than this. The mess fees is an additional amount of around 40000 per year.
Campus Life :
The campus is a very newly established campus and so has very limited facilities. There aren't many fests in the college itself but you get the chance of going to other colleges to take part in other fests and competitions. Every year a foundation day is celebrated where you get a chance to perform artforms. The library is decently well-equipped with a fair number of books on various topics of law. The classrooms are normal with the option of using a projector, but that projector is rarely used. For sports you have table tennis, badminton, volleyball and football, cricket and basketball all played on a single ground. Actually it is not even a ground, but just a parking space used for almost all extracurricular activities. There are various committees run by students such as moot court committee, sports committee, etc. that one may join depending on one's interest. The campus is located in a peaceful environment so may enjoy that.
Hostel Facilities :
I use the mess everyday and have lived in the hostel for a certain period. The mess food is decent and I find it good on most days. The mess menu is diverse enough to not make to feel bored. Unless you are a fussy eater, you should not find much difficulty in getting along with the mess food. The hostel fees is compulsory and you will be allotted a hostel room which is shared by 2-4 people depending on the size of the room. The hostels are decently clean with most of them having an attached washroom. If you do not want to live in the hostel you may opt out and rent a room/PG nearby. There are plenty available around the college (ask locals). Even if you opt out of the hostel, you will still have to pay the hostel fees. The only issue is that some of the hostels are far away (2-3 km) from the college. The college bus runs in the morning and evening, but if you miss it you will have to catch a local bus or take a cab (that charges around 100-200 rupees).
