CUG Courses and Fees

CUG provides undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, diploma and certificate education through more than 48 programmes. As a government-funded central university, it follows a low-fee structure. The total charge for most MA courses is INR 12,450, while M.Sc programmes cost INR 15,250.

The listed MA and M.Sc fees apply to the complete 2-year duration. The total charge is INR 17,250 for both M.Ed and MA Social Work, while the BA Hons with Research programme costs INR 22,450. CUG also teaches less commonly available subjects such as Diaspora Studies, Gandhian Studies and National Security Studies.

CUG Admission Process

CUG uses CUET scores for undergraduate and postgraduate selection. BA Hons with Research and the integrated BA+MA programme accept CUET-UG, while MA, M.Sc, M.Ed and M.Lib.Sc admissions use CUET-PG. PhD applicants may qualify through UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, GATE with JRF, or the university’s doctoral entrance examination.

UG Admission for BA Hons with Research and Integrated BA+MA

Applicants who have completed 10+2 or an equivalent examination from any recognised board may apply, regardless of their stream. Admission follows these steps:

1. Appear for CUET-UG in the required subjects.
2. Wait for the CUET-UG score to be declared.
3. Check the merit list issued by CUG.
4. Complete document verification after selection.
5. Pay the course fee and finish enrolment.

Popular courses such as Social Management require a competitive CUET-UG score in the relevant domain subjects.

PG Admission for MA, M.Sc, M.Ed and M.Lib.Sc

Selection for every postgraduate programme is based on CUET-PG merit. MA applicants must meet all of the following conditions:

• Hold a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline from a recognised university
• Have at least 50% aggregate marks, or 45% for SC and ST applicants
• Secure a valid CUET-PG score in the relevant subject domain

M.Sc applicants need a B.Sc in the appropriate science discipline with at least 50% marks. Admission to M.Ed requires a B.Ed or an equivalent qualification.

Once CUET-PG results are available, CUG prepares its merit list. Students are then called in rank order for document checks and admission. MA English and MA Hindi generally receive applications from a large number of CUET-PG candidates across India.

PhD Admission

A master’s degree with at least 55% marks is needed for doctoral admission. Applicants holding UGC-NET JRF or CSIR-NET JRF may proceed directly to the interview. Other candidates must clear the CUG PhD Entrance Examination. The final process includes a written test and an interview, and JRF-qualified researchers receive fellowships according to UGC rules.

CUG Placements and Career Outcomes

CUG mainly prepares students for research, teaching, civil services and public-sector careers in social sciences, humanities and basic sciences. Campus recruitment is not its sole career focus. NIRF 2024 figures show a median annual salary of INR 4.47 Lakhs for graduates who secured placements.

Students from Economics, International Relations and Political Science commonly prepare for civil services. Social Work graduates find roles with NGOs, government welfare departments and international development organisations. Those completing a PhD often move into faculty or research positions at universities and research institutions across India.

Science students can use the university’s research facilities and benefit from its institutional links with research organisations based in Gujarat. CUG also provides Non-NET Fellowship support to full-time PhD scholars who have not cleared UGC-NET.

CUG Scholarships

CUG manages government scholarships and fellowships for eligible students. These include UGC and National Scholarship Portal schemes for SC, ST, OBC, minority and economically weaker section students.

Students submit NSP scholarship applications through scholarship.gov.in. For eligible doctoral scholars, UGC fellowship payments are routed through the university.

CUG Campus and Infrastructure

CUG operates from its campus in Gandhinagar’s Sector 29 area. Its location in the Gujarat capital gives students access to city services and nearby government institutions.

The university has 11 Schools: the School of Social Sciences, School of International Studies, School of National Security Studies, School of Language Literature and Culture Studies, School of Chemical Sciences, School of Life Sciences, School of Nano Sciences, School of Applied Material Sciences, School of Environment and Sustainable Development, School of Education, and School of Library and Information Science. Interdisciplinary work is also supported by the Centre for Diaspora Studies and the Centre for Health Culture and Personality Development.

Academic facilities include a central library with digital material, language laboratories used by the Chinese and German programmes, laboratories for M.Sc subjects and dedicated research resources for PhD scholars. Enrolled students can obtain hostel accommodation either on the campus or nearby.

CUG vs Central University of Rajasthan vs Central University of Haryana

CUG, Central University of Rajasthan (CURAJ) and Central University of Haryana (CUH) are common choices for students seeking postgraduate study in humanities, social sciences or basic sciences at centrally funded universities. Each institution was created under the Central Universities Act 2009, uses CUET-PG for admission and follows government-level fees.

With an A+, CUG has the highest NAAC grade among these three universities. CURAJ provides a wider selection of science subjects, including Environmental Science, as well as Tribal Studies. CUH has a stronger course range in humanities and agriculture. CUG stands out for its access to Gandhinagar’s capital-city research environment. All three are fully funded by the government, admit students centrally through CUET and support PhD scholars through UGC fellowships.
