NIMHANS Admission Dates 2027

NIMHANS January 2027 admission is being held through two routes. MD, DM, and M.Ch admission is through INI CET or INI SS, while allied health, research, behavioural science, MPH, and PhD programmes use the NIMHANS Entrance Test.

NIMHANS Courses and Fees

NIMHANS has 80+ programmes across UG, PG, M.Phil, PhD, fellowship, and diploma levels. These courses are mainly in psychiatry, neurology, neurosurgery, allied health sciences, and mental health research. Since it is a government Institute of National Importance, the fee structure is subsidised.

Other options include Diploma in Clinical Neurophysiology Technology with a fee of INR 8,600, Post Basic Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing with a fee of INR 7,350, and fellowships in CBT, Geriatric Mental Health, and Disaster Management. Fellowship fees range from INR 18,350 to INR 26,350.

NIMHANS Admission Process

NIMHANS follows two admission systems. MD, DM, and M.Ch seats are allotted through the national INI CET and INI SS route. For BSc, MSc, M.Phil, MPH, PhD, and allied health programmes, the institute holds the NIMHANS Entrance Test twice a year, usually in May for the July batch and in November for the January batch.

MD / DM / M.Ch Admission (INI CET and INI SS)

• MD eligibility: Applicants need an MBBS degree from an MCI/NMC-recognised institution and must have completed internship.
• DM eligibility: Applicants must hold an MD or MS in the relevant discipline with at least 55% aggregate marks.
• M.Ch Neurosurgery eligibility: Applicants need MS General Surgery or an equivalent qualification.
• Exam: AIIMS Delhi conducts INI CET for MD admission and INI SS for DM and M.Ch admission. Registration is done through aiimsexams.ac.in.
• Selection: INI CET rank is used for choice filling and seat allotment in centralised MCC counselling for INI-cluster institutes, including NIMHANS, AIIMS, PGIMER, and JIPMER.

NIMHANS attracts high-ranking INI CET candidates along with AIIMS and PGIMER. For MD Psychiatry, the NIMHANS cutoff usually stays within the top 50 to 100 INI CET ranks.

BSc / MSc / M.Phil / MPH / PhD Admission (NIMHANS Entrance Test)

• B.Sc Nursing eligibility: Students must pass 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, secure at least 45% marks, and be at least 17 years old.
• M.Phil Clinical Psychology eligibility: A Masters degree in Clinical Psychology or Psychology with 55% marks is required.
• MPH eligibility: Applicants must have an MBBS or an equivalent recognised medical degree.
• Ph.D. eligibility: Applicants need a Masters degree in the relevant subject with 55%. Those with UGC-NET JRF or CSIR-NET do not have to take the written entrance test and can directly appear for the interview.
• Selection: Admission is based on a written entrance test with 70% weightage and a personal interview with 30% weightage. The minimum written test score is 50%, while SC, ST, and PwBD candidates need 45%.

The NIMHANS Entrance Test is held at the Bengaluru campus. The institute publishes results and interview schedules on its official website.

NIMHANS Placements and Career Outcomes

NIMHANS does not organise placements like a regular campus recruitment drive. Students usually move into clinical work, research, teaching, hospital roles, and government recruitment using their NIMHANS qualification. According to NIRF 2025 data, PG graduates recorded a median package of INR 18.04 LPA, while B.Sc Nursing graduates from the 4-year programme recorded INR 12 LPA.

NIMHANS alumni work at top government hospitals in India, at NIMHANS as faculty, at WHO, at AIIMS campuses, and in private hospital chains such as Manipal and Fortis. AIIMS and PGIMER have higher overall NIRF Medical ranks and offer wider clinical exposure across several specialties.
