Course Description

IIT Bombay offers PhD in a wide range of areas in Engineering, Sciences, Management, and Humanities & Social Sciences. IIT Bombay PhD program spans three years and comprises 36 specializations. Among these, the Computer Science Engineering specialization stands out as particularly sought-after, with GATE examination cut-offs ranging from 660 to 1000. The eligibility criteria for IIT Bombay Ph.D admission include a minimum aggregate of 60% in a Master’s degree, with candidate selection based on GATE, CEED, or UGC NET exam scores.

IIT Bombay PhD Highlights

  • As per NIRF Rankings 2023, IIT Bombay has been ranked 4th under the research category and 7th under the innovation category.
  • IIT Bombay admission to the PhD program is based on an interview and an entrance examination conducted by each department. Apart from this, it also accepts GATE / UGC NET scores for admission.
  • IIT Bombay provides admission and financial support to all its PhD candidates under 11 categories. Admission is based on MHRD norms categorically for Teaching Assistantship (TA), Research Assistantship (RA), and TA or RA, Sponsored Candidate (SW), Fellowship award, project staff, institute staff, etc.
  • According to the placement report for 2022-23, the average package for PhD candidates stood at INR 18.34 LPA, with the highest package reaching INR 29 LPA.
  • IIT Bombay offers PhD for 3 years to a maximum of 6 years. The PhD fees per semester at IIT Bombay are INR 30,400 for non-concessional, INR 10,400 for concessional, INR 5,400 for SC/ST/PD, and INR 2900 for Institute staff.

IIT Bombay PhD Eligibility

The general eligibility criteria for admission to PhD is :

  • Master’s or equivalent degree in Engineering/Technology.
  • MBA (with B.Tech./ B.E. or an equivalent degree).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medicine (4-year).
  • Bachelor's degree in Science (4-year program).
  • Master’s or equivalent degree in science/Arts/Commerce or related subjects.

Apart from the qualifying degrees listed above, candidates must have one of the following additional requirements:

a) A valid GATE/JEST (for Physics) score.
b) National Eligibility Test – UGC NET, including lectureship.
c) Selected through a national-level examination conducted by MoE or its agencies/Institutions such as UGC/IIT/IISc/IISER/IIIT, etc.
d) Provisionally selected for the DST-INSPIRE Fellowship.
e) Minimum of 2 years of professional experience.

However, all Bachelor’s degree undergraduate courses leading to a Bachelor’s, Integrated Master’s, or Bachelor-Master Dual Degree in Engineering, Sciences, or Architecture offered by IITs with a CGPA/CPI score of 8.00 (on a 10-scale) and above from an Indian Institute of Technology or any of the CFTIs are exempted from the requirement of a valid GATE score for admission.

IIT Bombay PhD Selection Criteria

The selection process comprises two main phases: application shortlisting and written/interview phases.

Phase 1: Application Shortlisting

Candidates are shortlisted based on their previous academic records and GATE/UGC-NET scores.

Relaxations are applied in accordance with Government of India norms as follows:

For General/OBC(NC)/EWS:

  • A minimum aggregate of 60% marks or first class in the Master’s degree.
  • Alternatively, a minimum CGPA of 6.0 or equivalent on a scale of 10.
  • Minimum 55% marks in Master’s degree in Arts, Commerce, or allied subjects such as Design and Social Science.

For ST/SC/PWD:

  • An aggregate of 55% marks or first class specified by the University in a Master’s degree.
  • Minimum CGPA of 5.5 or equivalent on a scale of 10.
  • At least 50% marks in Master's degree in Arts, Commerce, Design, or Social Sciences.

Phase 2: Final Selection

The final selection is based on performance in written tests and personal interviews, specifically for the Teaching Assistance category. Written tests are department-specific, and candidates must apply for tests relevant to their research area of interest. Shortlisted candidates from the written test will be notified and invited for an interview.

Note for PWD Candidates: PWD candidates can avail themselves of a one-time grant covering second-class railway fare for the shortest route between their residence and the institute. PWD candidates applying for multiple disciplines will receive only one grant.

The final selection process for the PhD program in any Departments/Centers/Schools/Interdisciplinary Groups at IIT Bombay will be through written tests and/or interviews as specified by the individual Department/Center/School/Interdisciplinary Groups.

How to Apply for IIT Bombay PhD Admission?

To apply for IIT Bombay PhD admissions, candidates must visit the IIT Bombay online portal dedicated to PhD admissions. If you are a new user, register by providing a valid email address and creating a password. Further, you will be able to access the application form link. Complete the application form with accurate personal details and academic records and proceed to make the required payment using net banking, credit cards, or debit cards.

Submit your application. You may apply for up to three disciplines or specializations. In addition to your application, you must submit a Statement of Purpose or a Research Proposal as required by the academic unit. Given below are a few of the important points to note regarding Ph.D admission.

  • If applying to the Ashank Desai Centre for Policy Studies (ADCPS), you must upload a research proposal instead of a Statement of Purpose. This proposal will be evaluated for admission and should include problem identification, a brief review of relevant literature, proposed methodology, and recent references.
  • For the Management (SJMSOM) program, a research proposal (1500 words) on a topic of your interest is required instead of a Statement of Purpose. It should cover problem identification, literature review, and methodology.
  • Applicants to the Department of Humanities & Social Sciences, CTARA, or CSRE must upload both a Statement of Purpose and a research proposal. The research proposal for CTARA should include problem identification, literature review, and proposed methodology. The SOP for CSRE should refer to one or more topics of interest from the provided list.
  • Candidates applying to IDC should submit a Statement of Purpose along with a research proposal (~1500 words) covering the research area, literature review, proposed methodology, and recent work related to their research.
  • For Educational Technology, the Statement of Purpose should cover your interests and motivation for applying, the relevance of recent and current activities, and details about academic interests, including areas of interest and post-PhD plans.
  • Applicants to the Desai Sethi School of Entrepreneurship (DSSE) should submit a research proposal (1000 - 2000 words) identifying a research problem/interest, arguing for its relevance, citing existing literature, and proposing a research methodology.

Students must ensure completion of the application form in all respects. Any incomplete applications will not be considered.

When submitting the PhD Application, you must upload:

  • Scanned photograph and signature.
  • Mark-sheet of the last semester/Consolidated mark-sheet of the qualifying degree.
  • Caste Certificate. (if applicable)
  • Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) certificate. (if applicable)
  • PwD Certificate (if applicable).
  • Sponsorship certificate (if applicable), or a Self-Declaration letter if not available
  • NOC and recommendation letter from the Principal Investigator/Head/Office-In-Charge for Project Staff/Institute Staff.
  • Statement of Purpose, sample of writing (if applicable), and research proposal (if applicable), combined into a single file regardless of the number of disciplines/specializations.

IIT Bombay PhD Seat Intake

In 2024, IIT Bombay has allocated 428 seats for its PhD program across different student categories. Previously, the program had 431 seats. The expansion in seat availability is attributed to the introduction of C-Minds and KCDH in the academic years 2020 and 2021, respectively.
