IIT Bombay offers PhD in a wide range of areas in Engineering, Sciences, Management, and Humanities & Social Sciences. IIT Bombay PhD program spans three years and comprises 36 specializations. Among these, the Computer Science Engineering specialization stands out as particularly sought-after, with GATE examination cut-offs ranging from 660 to 1000. The eligibility criteria for IIT Bombay Ph.D admission include a minimum aggregate of 60% in a Master’s degree, with candidate selection based on GATE, CEED, or UGC NET exam scores.
The general eligibility criteria for admission to PhD is :
Apart from the qualifying degrees listed above, candidates must have one of the following additional requirements:
a) A valid GATE/JEST (for Physics) score.
b) National Eligibility Test – UGC NET, including lectureship.
c) Selected through a national-level examination conducted by MoE or its agencies/Institutions such as UGC/IIT/IISc/IISER/IIIT, etc.
d) Provisionally selected for the DST-INSPIRE Fellowship.
e) Minimum of 2 years of professional experience.
However, all Bachelor’s degree undergraduate courses leading to a Bachelor’s, Integrated Master’s, or Bachelor-Master Dual Degree in Engineering, Sciences, or Architecture offered by IITs with a CGPA/CPI score of 8.00 (on a 10-scale) and above from an Indian Institute of Technology or any of the CFTIs are exempted from the requirement of a valid GATE score for admission.
The selection process comprises two main phases: application shortlisting and written/interview phases.
Phase 1: Application Shortlisting
Candidates are shortlisted based on their previous academic records and GATE/UGC-NET scores.

Phase 2: Final Selection
The final selection is based on performance in written tests and personal interviews, specifically for the Teaching Assistance category. Written tests are department-specific, and candidates must apply for tests relevant to their research area of interest. Shortlisted candidates from the written test will be notified and invited for an interview.
Note for PWD Candidates: PWD candidates can avail themselves of a one-time grant covering second-class railway fare for the shortest route between their residence and the institute. PWD candidates applying for multiple disciplines will receive only one grant.
The final selection process for the PhD program in any Departments/Centers/Schools/Interdisciplinary Groups at IIT Bombay will be through written tests and/or interviews as specified by the individual Department/Center/School/Interdisciplinary Groups.
To apply for IIT Bombay PhD admissions, candidates must visit the IIT Bombay online portal dedicated to PhD admissions. If you are a new user, register by providing a valid email address and creating a password. Further, you will be able to access the application form link. Complete the application form with accurate personal details and academic records and proceed to make the required payment using net banking, credit cards, or debit cards.
