AFMC selects MBBS students through NEET UG-based shortlisting and a screening round held at AFMC Pune. MD and MS admission is based on NEET PG, while DM and M.Ch admission follows NEET SS.

AFMC Courses and Fees

AFMC offers medical, nursing, super-specialty, postgraduate diploma, and research programmes. The fees below are for the general quota and show the total programme cost unless stated otherwise.

The complete MBBS fee is INR 0.99 Lakhs for 5.5 years, which makes AFMC one of the lowest-fee government medical colleges in India. The fee is linked to the bond-service system, where the government supports the education cost and students serve in the Armed Forces Medical Services after graduation.

AFMC Admission Process

AFMC MBBS admission has two main parts. First, candidates are shortlisted through NEET UG scores. Next, shortlisted students attend AFMC's own screening process in Pune.

Eligibility (MBBS): Applicants must have passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology and must have at least 60 percent aggregate marks. The age limit is 17 to 24 years as of December 31 of the admission year. Both male and female candidates can apply. The seat split is 115 seats for boys and 30 seats for girls. Students from all Indian states are eligible, and 5 seats are kept for candidates from friendly foreign countries.

Stage 1, NEET UG Shortlisting: AFMC selects 2,000 candidates from the national NEET UG merit list. The shortlist can include up to 1,600 boys and 400 girls, based on NEET scores. The required NEET percentile is usually in the 90th percentile and above, but the exact cutoff changes each year with exam difficulty and competition.

Stage 2, AFMC Screening: Shortlisted candidates have to report to AFMC Pune for four checks:

• ToELR (Test of English Language, Reasoning, and General Intelligence): 40 multiple-choice questions, 80 marks, and a 30-minute computer-based test
• PAT (Physical Aptitude Test): A test of physical fitness and agility as required for Armed Forces service
• Interview: 50 marks, used to assess personality, motivation, and suitability for service in the Armed Forces
• Medical Examination: A fitness check based on Armed Forces standards, which are stricter than regular NMC norms

Final Merit: The final merit list is prepared out of 250 marks. AFMC combines the NEET UG score with the screening components. Candidates who clear every part are ranked for the 150 MBBS seats.

Bond Obligation: Admission depends on signing a service bond. Each student must serve as a Commissioned Officer in the Indian Army Medical Corps, Naval Medical Service, or Air Force Medical Service for at least seven years after completing MBBS and the one-year internship. A candidate who leaves after seven days of admission or does not complete the service duty has to pay a bond penalty of INR 69 Lakhs.

PG (MD and MS) Admission: MD and MS admission is through NEET PG merit, followed by INI CET counselling for central government institutions. AFMC participates in INI CET counselling. Applicants need an MBBS degree and a completed one-year internship. For internal candidates, selection may also consider earlier AFMC MBBS training performance.

AFMC Placements and Career Outcomes

AFMC does not run placements like most civilian medical colleges. MBBS graduates are directly commissioned as officers in the Indian Armed Forces, so the college has a 100 percent employment pathway through government service.

Graduates work as medical officers in field hospitals, base hospitals, military stations, and command hospitals in India. They may also serve in international peacekeeping assignments. Career growth follows the Army, Navy, or Air Force rank structure: Lieutenant, Captain after 2 years, Major after 6 years of commissioned service, and then higher ranks. AFMC graduates receive pension, accommodation, and healthcare benefits available to commissioned officers.

Since 1966, AFMC has produced more than 7,000 medical graduates and 1,500 nursing officers. Several alumni have become Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS), the highest medical officer post in the Indian Armed Forces.

AFMC Rankings

AFMC is counted among India's leading government medical colleges. Its NIRF participation has not been regular in recent years.

AFMC was ranked 30 in NIRF Medical 2024 with a score of 57.68, placing it in the top 30 medical colleges in India. The college did not participate in NIRF 2025. Its Graduation Outcome score in the NIRF 2024 framework was 81.66, supported by its near-100 percent commissioning outcome. AFMC has held NAAC accreditation since 2003, has completed four accreditation cycles, and received the A+ grade in April 2023.

AFMC Campus and Infrastructure

AFMC is spread across a 119-acre campus in Wanowrie in eastern Pune, within the larger military cantonment area. The campus is fully residential for MBBS students, and students live on campus during the full programme.

Teaching Hospital: The main teaching hospital of AFMC is Command Hospital (Southern Command). It is a major tertiary care hospital with more than 1,000 beds. Students get clinical training in general medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, cardiology, neurosurgery, oncology, and other specialties. More clinical postings are available through other affiliated hospitals in the Southern Command.

Academic and Research Infrastructure: AFMC has equipped preclinical departments for Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry. The college also has modern laboratories and a dedicated anatomy museum. Its clinical teaching is supported by a central library with more than 30,000 volumes, digital journal subscriptions, a simulation centre, a skills lab, and advanced imaging and diagnostic equipment in the attached hospital.

Residential Life: MBBS students stay in separate hostels for men and women. Mess facilities follow Army catering standards. Residential and dining facilities are included as part of the nominal fee structure. Students wear uniform and follow a regulated daily routine that matches the military setting.

Sports and Physical Training: Physical fitness is a major part of AFMC life. The campus has a swimming pool, tennis and badminton courts, an athletics track, football and hockey grounds, and a gym. Physical training is included in the MBBS schedule across all five years.

Student Life: The college has academic, cultural, and sports activities such as the annual Hippocrates Day celebration, cultural festivals, intra-AFMC sports competitions, and inter-medical college quiz and debate events. Batch-wise student officer associations manage extracurricular activities with the college administration.
