XAT 2026 is a computer-based test having multiple choice questions across four sections, Verbal and Logical Ability, Decision Making, Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation and General Knowledge. The XAT exam pattern 2026 is a combination of multiple-choice questions, negative marking, and a novel ‘XAT 2026 Skip Penalty’ mechanism.

• XAT 2026 Marking Scheme - Each question carries 1 mark, with 95 questions. There is a negative marking i.e. 0.25 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer.
• XAT 2026 Skip Penalty - Candidates can skip up to 8 questions without any penalty. After the 8th question, there will be a penalty of 0.1 marks per question.
• General Knowledge Section - The GK section has no negative markings. Also, it will not contribute to a candidate's overall percentile or score. But, it will be considered in the selection process for XLRI programmes only.
• The key changes in the XAT exam pattern 2026 include the removal of the Analytical Essay Writing section, which is now shifted to the GD/PI stage.

XAT 2026 Marking Scheme

Before appearing for the XAT 2026 exam, candidates must understand the marking scheme and negative marking criteria for this exam.

XAT 2026 Marking Scheme is as follows:

• For every correct answer, candidates will get +1 mark. While for incorrect or wrong answers in VALR, DM and QA/DI, there will be a -0.25 marks penalty.
• For the GK section, there will be no negative marking.
• For skip or unattempted answers, there will be certain penalty scheme as mentioned below:
  • For the first 8 unattempted questions, there will be no penalty and it is safe to not answer 8 questions.
  • While, for each unattempted question beyond 8, there will be -0.10 mark penalty per question.

Let us understand the XAT 2026 marking scheme with an example -

Suppose a candidate attempts 60 questions and gets 52 right, 8 wrong and left 7 unattempted (within the safe 8 penalty rule).

• Score from correct answers = 52 x 1 = 52
• Penalty or negative marking from wrong answers = 8 x 0.25 = 2
• Skip Penalty = 0 (since unattempted is less than 8)
• Net score on Part 1 = 52 - 2 = 50 marks

This means, any candidate pays both the wrong penalty and skip penalty (is beyond 8) and this cumulatively reduces the net score.

By keeping XAT exam pattern 2026 in mind, candidates can maximize their net scores. There are some ways or tips to manage and allocate time effectively to increase accuracy and net score:

• Alternate attempts between QA/DI and VALR to avoid mental fatigue. Shifting sections and sets of new questions refreshes the mind.
• Do not put much time on difficult DI sets. If the DI set is consuming too much time, then skip it and return for retry if time is left.
• It is very important to keep a check and count on the number of unattempted questions. If the number exceeds 8, then the penalty will reduce the net score.
• Mark tricky questions and revisit them in the review phase.
