For management aspirants, entrance exam scores are often an important part of the admission process. However, classroom learning also plays a key role in preparing students for careers in management. ICFAI Business School (IBS) follows a case-based learning approach that focuses on helping students understand business situations and make decisions based on real-world challenges.
A major part of this approach is the IBS Case Research Center (IBS CRC), which develops management cases used across the IBS network. The cases are integrated into the 2-year full-time MBA and PGPM programmes across all 9 IBS campuses, including IBS Hyderabad, giving students opportunities to study business situations through classroom discussions and practical analysis.
IBS Case Research Center and Case-Based Learning
The IBS Case Research Center (IBS CRC) is ranked 3rd globally, alongside case publishers such as Harvard Business Publishing and INSEAD. Its cases are used as part of the academic curriculum across the IBS campuses.
The case-based approach requires students to study a business situation, identify the main issue and discuss possible solutions instead of only learning concepts from textbooks.
Key elements of the approach include:
- Analysing real-world business scenarios
- Working with incomplete or complex information
- Identifying key business and operational problems
- Developing and comparing possible solutions
- Taking part in classroom debates and group discussions
- Presenting and defending ideas before peers
- Responding to questions and feedback during discussions
This method connects management concepts with situations that students may face in professional roles.
Skills Developed Through Case-Based Learning
Case discussions require students to look at a problem from different angles and support their decisions with available information. This can help develop both analytical and communication skills.
| Area | Skills Developed |
|---|---|
| Analysis | Critical thinking and quantitative analysis |
| Data | Data interpretation and synthesis |
| Decision-making | Evaluating options under constraints |
| Strategy | Linking decisions with business objectives |
| Communication | Presenting and defending ideas |
| Teamwork | Group discussions and peer interaction |
| Listening | Active listening and responding to different viewpoints |
IBS has also shared campus-based videos explaining how case studies are used to develop analytical and decision-making skills in the classroom. Candidates can watch the videos on the official IBS case studies page.
