GMU Admission Dates 2027

The next GMU undergraduate admission cycle is expected to run through the SAMS Odisha portal. The following schedule for the 2027-28 session is tentative.

GMU Courses and Fees

GMU has more than 77 programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels. The fees are regulated by the government, and the amount varies by programme, level and subject group.

Notable choices include BSc Information Science and Telecommunication and the integrated BA+BEd and BSc+BEd teacher-training programmes. Biotechnology is available at the doctoral level along with humanities and commerce subjects. Under Odisha government rules, eligible SC and ST students receive a complete tuition fee exemption and pay only miscellaneous charges.

GMU Admission Process

SAMS Odisha manages admission to every undergraduate course and most postgraduate courses at GMU. Class 12 marks determine UG selection, while PG admission may use graduation merit, an entrance score or both, depending on the programme.

UG Admissions for BA, BSc, BCom and BBA

An applicant must meet these conditions for an undergraduate seat:

• The student must have passed Class 12 or 10+2 from a recognised board.
• The Class 12 subjects must match the chosen programme. PCM is needed for BSc Mathematics, a science background is required for BSc, and students from any stream may apply for BA, BCom or BBA.
• SAMS does not prescribe a minimum percentage, but seats are awarded competitively using aggregate Class 12 marks.

The UG application and selection process follows these steps:

• Complete the online form on the SAMS Odisha UG portal.
• Wait for the merit list prepared from Class 12 aggregate marks.
• Enter programme choices online and take part in seat allotment.
• Pay the required fee and report to GMU for document verification.
• Complete enrolment after the admission is confirmed.

The National Education Policy structure allows BA Hons and BSc Hons students to leave after 3 years with a Pass degree or remain for the complete 4-year Hons programme. Both routes follow the same admission procedure.

PG Admissions for MA, MSc, MCom, MBA and MCA

Postgraduate applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

• A bachelor's degree in the relevant subject from a recognised university is required.
• General-category applicants need at least 45% aggregate marks, while SC and ST applicants need 40%.
• MBA applicants must also hold a valid Odisha Joint Entrance Examination, or OJEE, score.
• MCA applicants need a valid OJEE score or an equivalent qualifying route.

SAMS Odisha PG selects MA, MSc and MCom students using graduation marks and subject eligibility. OJEE performance is also considered for MBA and MCA. The university does not announce an MBA closing score in advance because the final score depends on competition during admission.

PhD Admissions

PhD applicants must meet these conditions:

• A postgraduate degree in the relevant field with at least 55% marks is required. The minimum is 50% for SC, ST and PwD applicants.
• The applicant must have a valid UGC-NET qualification with JRF or pass GMU's Research Entrance Test.

Applicants who do not hold NET/JRF must take GMU's written RET and then attend an interview before the Doctoral Committee. The university has PhD seats in 22 disciplines, including Biotechnology, Computer Science and Sociology. Applications are made directly through the official GMU website at gmuniversity.ac.in.

GMU Career Outcomes

GMU is a state government university centred on teaching. Its graduates commonly move into government examinations, public-sector jobs, higher education, research and teaching instead of depending mainly on corporate campus recruitment.

The Career Development Cell offers guidance and keeps placement records for graduating batches. GMU has not published NIRF-verified combined CTC figures for its programmes.

Common career routes differ by academic field:

• Arts and Humanities: Graduates prepare for UPSC, Odisha PSC, SSC and banking examinations. Other routes include school or college teaching after NET/SET and further postgraduate research.
• Science: Students pursue NET or GATE fellowships, research roles in DRDO and CSIR laboratories, government technical posts and other research careers.
• Commerce and MBA: Opportunities include banking, finance, insurance, government service, corporate human resources and operations, mainly within Odisha.
• BSc Computer Science and MCA: Graduates enter IT services, software support and government IT positions.
• Integrated BA+BEd and BSc+BEd: These qualifications make graduates directly eligible for school teaching posts in Odisha government schools.

Graduates do not have a service bond. During their doctoral studies, PhD scholars may apply for national fellowship programmes offered through UGC-JRF, ICMR, ICSSR and DBT.

GMU Scholarships

GMU students may apply for several Odisha government and central government scholarship schemes. Dedicated support cells for SC, ST and OBC students help with applications submitted through the National Scholarship Portal and Odisha's scholarship systems.

National Scholarship Portal applications are completed online. GMU's student welfare office helps students check eligibility and prepare the required documents.

GMU Campus and Infrastructure

GMU's main campus at Amruta Vihar, Sambalpur, contains both teaching and residential spaces. A second campus is under construction to increase the university's capacity.

The main facilities available to students are:

• 9 hostels accommodate male and female students.
• 4 IT laboratories and an IT skill centre support computer use and digital literacy training.
• The central instrumentation facility provides equipment for advanced science research.
• An e-resource centre gives access to digital library material and electronic journals.
• The 1,200-seat auditorium hosts seminars, convocations and cultural programmes.
• A three-storey utility centre includes a bank branch, canteen, creche, stationery outlet and gym.
• A maintained sports field supports several sporting activities.

Hostel charges are paid separately from academic fees through the designated payment system. Many GMU students come from Sambalpur, Bolangir, Jharsuguda and nearby districts in western Odisha. The Odisha government has designated the campus as a heritage institution because of its history as one of the region's oldest degree-granting institutions.

GMU vs Sambalpur University vs Berhampur University

Students considering postgraduate or doctoral study in Odisha often compare Gangadhar Meher University with Sambalpur University and Berhampur University. The institutions differ in accreditation, location and programme range.

GMU provides a wider selection of NEP-based 4-year Hons courses at the undergraduate level and serves arts and science students in the Sambalpur region. Sambalpur University has an A++ NAAC grade and a larger postgraduate range that includes a Law Faculty. Berhampur University primarily serves students from the Ganjam and Koraput belt of southern Odisha. Students from other areas can compare the available programmes and NAAC grades when deciding among the three universities.
