Utkal University Admission Dates 2027

Utkal University is expected to start the next admission cycle for 2027-28 in April 2027. PG admission is usually based on CPET for most postgraduate courses, OJEE for MCA and GATE for M.Tech. UG admission in affiliated colleges is handled through the SAMS portal of the Government of Odisha.

Utkal University Courses and Fees

Utkal University runs PG, integrated UG+PG, doctoral and diploma courses. Since it is a state government university, many of its regular academic programmes have low fees. The table lists key courses with duration, eligibility and total fee for the full programme.

Hostel seats are available at nominal government rates, with charges going up to INR 42,000 per year. Affiliated colleges of Utkal University offer BA, B.Sc and B.Com courses across Odisha, and their fees are fixed separately as per Government of Odisha rules.

Utkal University Admission Process

Utkal University uses CPET (Common Post Graduate Entrance Test) for most of its PG admissions. CPET is the common entrance route for PG courses offered directly by the university. Seat allotment is based on the merit score secured in CPET.

MA and M.Sc Admission

For MA admission, students need a Bachelor’s degree in the relevant subject with at least 45% aggregate, or 40% for SC/ST students. For M.Sc admission, students must have a B.Sc with relevant subjects and at least 45% aggregate. Selection is based on CPET merit. The subjects include:

• MA: Economics, English, History, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Philosophy, Geography, Sanskrit, Hindi, Odia, Public Administration, Statistics, Mathematics, Anthropology, Women Studies and more
• M.Sc: Botany, Chemistry, Zoology, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Geology, Geography, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Environmental Science and Applied Microbiology

MBA and Professional PG Admission

MBA applicants need a graduation degree with at least 50% aggregate and a valid CAT, MAT or CPET score. MCA admission is based on OJEE scores and is open to students with BCA, B.Sc CS or an equivalent graduation degree with Mathematics. M.Tech in CS and IT requires B.Tech/BE or MCA along with a valid GATE score.

Integrated and Teacher Education Admission

BCA+MCA and BBA+MBA integrated courses take students through 10+2 merit, with CPET used for the lateral PG part. B.Ed and M.Ed admission is done through CPET or the Odisha state teacher entrance test. MJMC and LLM admission is based on merit or CPET.

Ph.D. Admission

Ph.D. applicants must hold a Master’s degree with at least 55% aggregate. Students who have qualified UGC-NET, CSIR-NET or GATE are usually exempted from the written entrance test. Selection includes a written test and a departmental interview. Ph.D. admission notices are released in August every year.

Utkal University Placements

Utkal University mainly functions as a PG teaching and affiliating university, so large-scale campus placement is not its main focus. According to NIRF 2024 data, 120 students from 5-year integrated programmes were placed, and the median salary was INR 3.70 LPA. The placement cell helps MBA, MCA, M.Tech, MJMC and integrated programme students through recruitment drives and internship support.

Many graduates move toward competitive exams and research-based careers. Common routes include Odisha and central government PSU jobs, UPSC and OPSC civil services, UGC-NET, teaching, judicial services for LLM graduates and research roles. MBA and MCA students also see hiring activity in BFSI, IT and retail sectors.

Students need to register on the National Scholarship Portal or the Odisha government scholarship portal before the yearly deadline. Ph.D. students with UGC-JRF/SRF fellowships get stipend support directly from the University Grants Commission.

Utkal University Campus and Infrastructure

Utkal University has a 399-acre campus at Vani Vihar, Bhubaneswar. The campus has 30+ teaching departments, a central library, research centres, administrative buildings and residential facilities. The central library holds more than 3 lakh books and journals across subjects, along with digital access to academic databases.

The academic facilities include botany, zoology, chemistry, physics and geology laboratories, computer labs, seminar halls and an auditorium. Research work runs across science, social science and humanities departments with support from DST, UGC and ICSSR-funded projects. The university also has a Yoga and Human Consciousness centre.

Separate boys’ and girls’ hostels are available on campus, with charges up to INR 42,000 per year. Other facilities include gyms, a cafeteria, sports grounds, a bank, a health centre and 24-hour security. Utkal University vs Berhampur University vs Sambalpur University

Students looking for a state government university in Odisha often compare Utkal University in Bhubaneswar, Berhampur University in Berhampur and Sambalpur University in Burla. All three are major affiliating universities, but their locations and subject strengths differ.

Utkal University has the lead for NAAC grade, NIRF position and access to Bhubaneswar’s job market. Berhampur University mainly serves southern Odisha and is known for arts and commerce. Sambalpur University serves western Odisha and has strengths in science and technology education because of its location near the Burla engineering belt. All three universities offer PG courses at government-subsidised fee levels.
