NIT Meghalaya PhD Admissions

NIT Meghalaya offers Ph.D. in eight specialisations. For admission to Full Time PhD Program, candidates must have a Master's degree in the relevant field, along with a minimum 60% marks or an equivalent CGPA. Candidates with B.E./BTech with minimum 75% marks and valid GATE score are also eligible to apply. For Ph.D. in Humanities & Social Sciences, minimum 55% marks in Master’s degree is required for admission.

The selection in Ph.D. course is done based on Written Test, followed by an Interview. The candidate’s age should not be more than 35 years. It can be relaxed for women, reserved category and PWD candidates as per norms.

Ques. Can employed individuals pursue PhD at NIT Meghalaya?

Ans. PhD is offered at NIT Meghalaya is offered in Part-Time Mode for employed individuals. Employees from Industries and Research & Development Organizations and Employees from Academic Institutes and Faculties of Senior Colleges must have a minimum working experience of 5 years, after completion of UG (B.E/B.Tech). Out of these 5 years, 2 years should be from the current organisation. Candidates with M.E/M.Tech/Master’s degree in the relevant field must have a minimum of 3 years working experience, out of which 2 years should be from the current organisation, to apply for the Sponsored Ph.D. Programme. Candidates from Polytechnic Institutes or those with AMIE must be an MTech graduate to apply for PhD.

Ques. Apart from the centralised process, does NIT Meghalaya follow its own admission process for MTech?

Ans. In case any vacant seats are left after completion of CCMT Final Round, they are filled through the institute mode admission for GATE/Non-GATE candidates. For this, a separate selection process is carried out.

To apply, the candidate must have BE/BTech in relevant stream, with 60% or 6.5 CGPA, 60% or 6.5 CGPA for Gen/EWS/OBC, and 55% or 6.0 CGPA for SC, ST & PwD candidates. Mathematics is compulsory in 10+2.

Non-GATE candidates are also eligible to apply, provided they fulfil the eligibility criteria as mentioned above. However, preference will be given to candidates having a valid GATE score. For the institute mode admission, an entrance test and/or interview will be conducted. Depending upon the vacant seats available after the CCMT final round, a merit list will be published based on the performance in the entrance test and/or interview.

Candidates without a JAM score are also eligible to apply, provided they fulfil the eligibility criteria i.e BSc in relevant stream with 60% or 6.5 CGPA for Gen/EWS/OBC, and 55% or 6.0 CGPA for SC, ST & PwD candidates. Mathematics is compulsory at 10+2 level.
