NIT Meghalaya Student Reviews

Sumit Kumar, a B.Tech Mechanical Engineering student from the 2024 batch, shared his experience of the admission process.

He explained that admission to the government-run NIT is based on JEE Main, which NTA usually conducts twice each year in January and April. A suitable percentile and All India Rank allow a student to enter JoSAA and CSAB counselling. Applicants list colleges in their preferred order, and the counselling system assigns a seat according to JEE performance. He stated that students need to pass Class 12 from a recognised board with 75% marks. He also noted that the examination is taken by 15 lakh students each year and only 50,000 secure seats.

Bhawani Shankar, a B.Tech Electrical & Electronics Engineering student from the 2024 batch, also discussed his admission. He received confirmed admission at RTU Kota but gave it up because he wanted to join NIT Meghalaya. His NIT Meghalaya seat came through JEE Main and JoSAA counselling. He observed that the home-state cutoff was much lower than the cutoff for applicants from other states.

NIT Meghalaya Admission 2026 FAQs

Ques. Which documents are needed to request a tuition fee waiver when annual family income is below Rs. 1 lakh?

Ans. Students with annual family income below Rs. 1 lakh can claim a fee waiver at NITs and IITs. At NIT Meghalaya, they may submit their request to Associate Dean of Student Welfare Dr S. Mukherjee or to the Director. The request should include these documents:

  • ST, SC, OBC or General category certificate.
  • Admission documents issued by both JoSAA and the institute.
  • Parents' income certificate from the local Panchayat, Zila Parishad, District Council or District Court.
  • Class 10 and Class 12 board mark sheets.
  • JEE scorecard.

Ques. What conditions must a first-year student meet to move to another engineering branch?

Ans. NIT Meghalaya considers branch-change requests after the second semester. The following rules apply:

  • The student must have a CGPA of at least 8.00 through the second semester and must not have any backlog.
  • After the change, no branch can fall below 80% of its approved student strength.
  • A branch cannot exceed its approved strength by more than 10%.
