All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Nagpur has operated as an autonomous central medical institute since 2018. The Government of India established it through the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). An Act of Parliament gives it Institute of National Importance status, and the National Medical Commission (NMC) recognises it. It is Maharashtra's only AIIMS.

Medical education, research and advanced patient care form the institute's main areas of work. AIIMS Nagpur secured 31st place in the NIRF Medical rankings for 2025. Its academic options extend from MBBS to postgraduate, super-speciality and doctoral study.

The 150-acre campus lies in Nagpur's MIHAN (Multi-modal International Hub Airport) area in Maharashtra. This planned township is near Nagpur International Airport and the city's urban centre. The institute has more than 50 departments, and its hospital provides tertiary care, meaning advanced specialist treatment, for the Vidarbha region.

  • MBBS is the institute's flagship course. It runs for 5.5 years, admits 125 students annually and uses NEET UG ranks for seat allocation through MCC counselling.
  • B.Sc Allied Health Sciences covers 5 programmes: Emergency Medicine Technology, Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical Radiology and Imaging Technology, Optometry, and Radiotherapy.
  • B.Sc (Hons) Nursing takes 4 years to complete.
  • MD and MS study is available in more than 20 disciplines, including General Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Radiodiagnosis, and Anatomy.
  • DM and M.Ch options include Cardiology, Nephrology, Neonatology, Neuro Surgery, Urology, Surgical Oncology, and other super-specialities.
  • M.Sc students can study Medical Biochemistry, Medical Physiology, Medical Pharmacology, or Nursing specialisations.
  • PhD research spans clinical departments and basic sciences.
  • Post Doctoral Certificate Courses (PDCC) cover Anaesthesia, Critical Care, Neurosurgical Anaesthesia, and Liver Intensive Care.

Steps for MBBS Admission

NEET UG merit determines MBBS selection. AIIMS Nagpur has no state, management or NRI quota.

  1. Check the entry conditions: complete 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology and at least 50% aggregate. The minimum is 40% for SC/ST/OBC applicants. Students must turn 17 on or before December 31 of the admission year.
  2. Take NEET UG and obtain a valid score.
  3. Register for centralised online counselling through the MCC website.
  4. Enter course and college preferences, including AIIMS Nagpur. Seat allocation depends on NEET rank and category.
  5. Follow the allotment and joining process for the relevant round. The admission process includes three allotment rounds and a mop-up round.
  • Central government reservation rules provide 27% for OBC, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST and 10% for EWS applicants.

Entry to MD and MS

Applicants need a valid MBBS qualification and must complete their internship. AIIMS conducts INICET twice a year, in May and November. After the results, AIIMS Nagpur fills MD/MS seats through combined AIIMS counselling. Central government reservation rules apply.

Entry to DM and M.Ch

For super-speciality admission, students must complete MD or MS in the relevant parent speciality and qualify through INICET. Some super-specialities also offer direct 6-year integrated MD-DM programmes. AIIMS institutions conduct counselling together.

Entry to Allied Health Sciences and Nursing

AIIMS Nagpur holds its own counselling for B.Sc Allied Health Sciences and B.Sc Nursing. Students must pass 10+2 with PCB and hold a valid NEET UG score, which forms the basis of selection.

AIIMS Nagpur MBBS Cutoffs

AIIMS Nagpur Rankings

In the 2025 NIRF Medical category, AIIMS Nagpur held rank 31. Academic work began in 2018, so the institute entered the country's top 35 medical institutions within seven years of starting operations. Its early development includes growth in research output, patient numbers and faculty strength.

AIIMS Nagpur is the newest among the six new-generation AIIMS established under PMSSY in Maharashtra and central India. Its progress in the NIRF Medical list places it among the newer AIIMS that have risen quickly in the rankings.

AIIMS Nagpur Campus and Infrastructure

Students live and study on a 150-acre site within the MIHAN integrated township in Nagpur, Maharashtra. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport lies next to the township. Planned roads and metro connections link the area with Nagpur city and its centre.

More than 50 clinical and preclinical departments support teaching and hospital care. The teaching hospital receives patients needing advanced specialist treatment from Vidarbha and nearby parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The campus plan provides for expansion to a full-service 750-bed teaching hospital over the next few years.

Separate on-campus hostels serve boys and girls, with annual charges of up to INR 15,140. AIIMS Nagpur remains the only AIIMS institution in Maharashtra.

AIIMS Nagpur, AIIMS Bhopal and AIIMS Raipur Compared

Students considering newer AIIMS in central India often compare these three institutions. Each is a central Institute of National Importance under PMSSY, follows the same fee structure and admits MBBS students through MCC counselling. Their age and NEET rank requirements are the main differences.

Location can guide the choice between these institutes. AIIMS Nagpur suits students from Maharashtra and neighbouring states who want to study in Vidarbha. Students from Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh tend to prefer AIIMS Bhopal and AIIMS Raipur respectively. Having opened earlier, Bhopal and Raipur have had more time to develop research and faculty strength in their early specialities.

Faculties are highly qualified, there's no spoon-feeding so you'll have to put in the effort as well selecting the right reference materials and studying them. Exams happen as per the academic year plan given at the beginning of the course.

Placement Experience:

As of yet no such programs are there. There have been talks about implementing a yearly contract with the hospital itself after graduation but it's still in the works. Most of the students here are opting to write NORCET and start as a nursing officer.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The reason behind me choosing this course was to improve the healthcare facilities in India and help Indians with affordable treatment and medicines with only the resources which are 100% swadeshi. Every faculty of our collrge has at least a double degree of MBBS and MD. Some even have DNB under their name. A lot of them are researchers and have PhD as well. The faculties are well experienced in delivering the best quality education to the students. The exams are conducted throughout the course. There are 3 professional exams which decide whether you can get the MBBS degree. Apart from that, internal assessments are conducted twice every year. The exams are very difficult and test the depth of your learning. The fee of MBBS is decided by the government so a hike in fees is rare. The government provides scholarships to students from the weaker sections of the society. The list of scholarships can be viewed from the scholarship portal of the GOI. Overall, MBBS is way cheaper in AIIMS.

Placement Experience:

For placement, the student must have completed MBBS and is provided with internship in the same college for 1 year. Placement in hospitals is based on another exam called INICET which is a course for the PGT. Basically the salary for PGTs is fixed at around 90000 Rs per month but once they pass residency, they can earn upto 5L Rs. per month. The percent of students getting placements is 100%. My plan after getting MBBS is to clear INICET and choose Radiology (MD).
