It serves Varanasi as well as patients from eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh.

The institute provides medical, dental, Ayurveda, nursing and pharmacy education from undergraduate to superspecialty level.

IMS BHU Admission Process

Entrance examination scores determine admission to IMS BHU. MBBS and BDS do not have direct admission, management quota or NRI quota routes. The Medical Counselling Committee conducts the relevant seat-allotment process for MBBS seats through MCC counselling.

MBBS Admission

An MBBS applicant must be at least 17 years old and must have completed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The minimum PCB score is 50% for the general category and 40% for SC, ST, OBC and PwD applicants. Admission also requires a valid NEET UG score.

  • Take NEET UG, qualify the examination and review the All India Rank.
  • Complete registration for MCC AIQ Round 1 counselling at mcc.nic.in.
  • Enter and lock the preferred choices before taking part in seat allotment.
  • If allotted IMS BHU, report within the stated period and carry the original documents.
  • Submit the required fee to secure the allotted admission.

MD / MS Admission

Applicants need an MBBS degree and must complete the compulsory one-year rotating internship before joining MD or MS. Selection relies on the NEET PG rank followed by MCC AIQ counselling. IMS BHU does not use an institute-level group discussion or interview for this selection.

DM / M.Ch Superspecialty Admission

Admission to DM or M.Ch requires the relevant MD or MS qualification, a valid NEET SS result and participation in MCC NEET SS counselling. DM is available in Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology and Endocrinology. M.Ch fields include Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology, Paediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Surgical Oncology.

BDS, BAMS, and B.Sc Nursing Admission

NEET UG and MCC AIQ counselling apply to BDS. For BAMS, students use their NEET UG AYUSH score through AACCC national counselling or UP AYUSH state counselling. B.Sc Nursing admission is based on CUCET, the Central Universities Common Entrance Test, or an entrance examination conducted specifically by BHU. Applicants for BAMS and B.Sc Nursing must have studied PCB in Class 12 and must be at least 17 years old.

IMS BHU Cutoffs

The closing rank changes with the examination performance, available seats, applicant count, category and counselling round. In the final AIQ round of 2025, the MBBS cutoff closed at 1,709 for the General category and 2,620 for OBC. The unreserved Uttar Pradesh State Quota generally closes at a higher rank than AIQ, indicating lower competition.

IMS BHU Rankings

In the 2025 NIRF Medical ranking, IMS BHU secured 6th place. The assessment covers BHU's medical and clinical departments together with its dental and Ayurveda faculties.

Ranking BodyCategory2025 Rank
NIRFMedical6

This position places IMS BHU above most state government medical colleges and several established central institutions. Its NIRF rank of 6, the attached 1,600-bed tertiary hospital and the MBBS General AIQ closing rank of 1,709 reflect its high level of admission competition among government medical colleges outside the AIIMS network.

IMS BHU Campus and Infrastructure

IMS BHU occupies the medical area of the Banaras Hindu University campus in Varanasi. The residential BHU campus extends over 1,350 acres and is among Asia's largest university campuses. The IMS area contains its academic medical block, the Sir Sunderlal Hospital complex, and separate buildings for the dental and AYUSH faculties.

The attached Sir Sunderlal Hospital is a 1,600-bed multi-super-specialty teaching hospital. Patients seeking tertiary and quaternary care arrive from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh. More than 50 clinical departments operate in the hospital, along with emergency, trauma and critical-care units and wards dedicated to individual specialties.

Students can use multiple hostels, the central library and its medical journal subscriptions, the sports complex, bank branches, a post office and the university's campus-wide connectivity network. The campus functions as a self-contained township, while the medical area includes residential quarters for faculty members and senior residents.

IMS BHU vs KGMU vs MAMC

Students considering government MBBS colleges in north India often assess IMS BHU alongside King George's Medical University in Lucknow and Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi. Each institution has competitive NEET admission standards and substantial clinical facilities.
