Parala Maharaja Engineering College (PMEC) is an Odisha government engineering institute founded on 26 April 2009. It is South Odisha's only government engineering college. PMEC is affiliated with Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT), Odisha, and received autonomous status in 2021.

The institute is approved by AICTE and has a B+ grade from NAAC. Select B.Tech programmes also hold NBA accreditation. PMEC is not listed in the NIRF Engineering rankings.

PMEC occupies an 80-acre campus at Sitalapalli, Berhampur, in southern Odisha's Ganjam district. Its facilities include four hostel blocks and laboratories maintained by individual academic departments.

Both male and female students can apply for hostel accommodation, which costs up to INR 37,360 per year. The B.Tech lateral entry total comprises INR 33,400 in the first year and INR 29,400 in each of the second and third years.

PMEC Admission Process

PMEC fills its engineering seats through counselling conducted by the Odisha Joint Entrance Examination Board. The qualifying examination, minimum marks, and counselling process vary by programme.

B.Tech Admission

For regular B.Tech admission, fresh applicants receive ranks based on their JEE Main scores and take part in OJEE counselling. Students must meet these conditions:

  • They must have completed 10+2 or an equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
  • They need at least 45% aggregate marks in PCM. The minimum is 40% for SC and ST applicants.
  • They must hold a valid JEE Main or OJEE score.

The process begins with JEE Main or OJEE registration. Applicants then register for online OJEE counselling, enter and lock their college choices, and wait for seat allocation. Those allotted a seat must pay the required fee, complete online reporting, and finally report to PMEC in person.

Computer Science and Engineering usually has greater competition than Production Engineering or Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. Its OJEE closing ranks are therefore substantially lower, and General category students generally need stronger JEE Main scores to secure a CSE seat.

B.Tech Lateral Entry Admission

A student with a diploma in a relevant engineering discipline can enter the second year of B.Tech through OJEE Lateral. The diploma must carry at least 45% marks. Separate lateral entry counselling rounds are conducted alongside the regular OJEE counselling schedule.

M.Tech Admission

Selection for M.Tech is merit-based and takes place through OJEE PG counselling, with preference given to applicants who have valid GATE scores. The eligibility conditions are:

  • B.Tech or B.E. in the relevant engineering discipline
  • At least 50% aggregate marks, or 45% for SC and ST applicants
  • A valid GATE score or OJEE PG rank

Applicants can submit their forms through the OJEE PG portal. Selected students must complete document verification before reporting to the institute.

PMEC Campus and Infrastructure

PMEC's 80-acre campus is in Sitalapalli, Ganjam district. As South Odisha's only government engineering college, it serves a region that includes Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Rayagada, and Kandhamal.

The institute has 11 academic departments, branch-specific computer laboratories, and a central library with digital subscriptions. Fabrication workshops and design studios support the Mechanical, Production, and Automobile departments. Founded in 1956, IGIT Sarang has the oldest research history of the three and holds the highest NAAC grade.
