What Does the PTE Score Report Show?

The test is taken in parts, but the four reported skills are not four independent raw-mark totals. A task can use more than one language skill. Read the official result as a profile of your performance rather than trying to reconstruct it from a home-made formula.

Is there a PTE passing score?

There is no single score that passes every university's English requirement. The relevant target is the one for your course and intake. A score can meet one programme's English condition and fall below another's, even at the same university.

PTE to IELTS Score Chart

Pearson updated its IELTS Academic concordance in July 2025. These are the published minimum PTE overall thresholds associated with the listed IELTS overall bands. They are not individual Listening, Reading, Speaking or Writing conversions.

For example, the comparison places IELTS 6.5 at a PTE overall threshold of 55. That does not mean a university asking for IELTS 6.5 must accept PTE 55. Institutions publish their own accepted tests and score conditions, including skill minimums.

If an older chart gives a different equivalent, check which study it uses. Mixing a previous concordance table with the revised one can change the target score even though the PTE reporting scale remains the same.

How Is the PTE Overall Score Calculated?

Pearson considers question scores, question difficulty and question weighting when producing the overall result. It does not add Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing and divide by four. Some tasks can contribute to more than one skill score.

Example: Listening 60, Reading 65, Speaking 70 and Writing 65 have an arithmetic mean of 65. That calculation does not establish the official PTE overall score. Use the overall number printed on the Score Report.

For the same reason, 65 out of 90 should not be advertised as an official PTE percentage or converted into a predicted rank. PTE is a language-proficiency scale, not a college examination with a simple marks-per-question percentage.

A calculator that asks only for four skill scores cannot reproduce Pearson's full scoring process. It can calculate an average, but calling that average a PTE overall score would mislead students.

Skill Scores and the Updated PTE Test

The 2025 update retained the original 20 question types and added Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation. The Score Report still shows the same overall and four skill scores on the 10–90 scale.

Pearson uses AI and human double marking for content in seven question types: Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Summarize Written Text, Write Essay, Summarize Spoken Text, Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation. Pronunciation and oral fluency remain machine-scored.

This makes an old claim that every aspect of every response is marked only by a computer incomplete. It also means a preparation chart listing only 20 task types misses the two added speaking tasks.

Why can one skill score be lower than the others?

An uneven result does not mean the report is wrong. Understanding a spoken message, organising a written response and delivering a clear spoken answer are different abilities. Integrated tasks connect some of these skills, but the final scores need not be equal.

Use the Skills Profile to narrow the problem. If Writing is below the course requirement, work on the response features shown in your feedback instead of assuming that a higher Speaking score will compensate. The PTE writing practice collection provides additional writing exercises; it is not a source for predicting an official score.

PTE Scores Required by Universities

The examples below show why a university name alone is not enough to set a target. Use the stated course or admissions level, not a blanket score copied across all degrees.

Melbourne assigns English levels or specific requirements to individual courses. UBC's listed requirement is for its Vancouver undergraduate standard, not a universal score for every graduate programme. Manchester's figure above belongs to the named master's course and entry year.

Overall score versus each-skill requirement

Suppose a course requires 64 overall and 60 in each skill. A report showing 68 overall with Writing 58 falls short of the Writing condition. A report showing 64 overall and all four skills at or above 60 meets that English-score condition, but academic eligibility and other selection requirements still apply.

Write down five targets when comparing offers: overall, Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. Also record the test type, accepted test dates and whether the scores must come from one sitting. UBC explicitly requires the listed minimums in a single sitting; combining your strongest skills from different attempts does not satisfy that rule.

Receiving and Sending Your PTE Score

Pearson says results are usually available within two days, but they can take up to five working days. Check your myPTE account and email, including the spam folder. Additional review can take longer, so a delay is not by itself evidence that you have failed.

The Score Report is valid for two years from the test date. A university may also specify an intake-based test-date condition, so compare your test date with that condition rather than relying only on the day you downloaded the report.

1. Sign in to myPTE and open the relevant completed test and score report.
2. Use the score-sharing option to select the institution and the required recipient details.
3. Confirm that you are sharing the correct test attempt and retain the sending record.
4. Follow any additional identification instructions in the university application so the result can be matched to you.

Pearson allows scores to be sent to an unlimited number of institutions free of charge. The official digital sharing process is different from emailing a screenshot or uploading a personal copy of the report.

If Your Score Is Below the Requirement

First identify the exact gap. Missing the overall score, missing one skill minimum and submitting the wrong PTE test type are different problems. List the requirement beside your result before choosing your next step.

For writing practice, use the sample writing tasks alongside feedback on content, organisation and language. Repeating an essay without reviewing those features gives little indication of what needs to change.
