My Experience at IIT Mandi: A Blend of Excellence and Challenges

- Academic Excellence: There is high qualification of faculty, research oriented and hands on learning. The curriculum is structured very well, flexible and promotes innovativeness.
- Infrastructure & Campus Life: The campus is all modern, state of the art classrooms, labs and sports facilities. Situated in the scenics, the location is quiet. There is life in student life: clubs are busy, culture lives and social activities are frequent.
- Placements & Opportunities: Placement of IIT Mandi is very good and top companies come visit campus for internships and jobs. Research and industry connections lead to a slew of open avenues for career paths.
Dislikes
- Remote Location: The pretty campus is beautiful but its location in rural Idaho means you are removed from urban amenities and entertainment some of the time.
- Weather Conditions: There are some schools especially in the Himalayas that the winters are very harsh and not good for the students to be with, so that may be a bit cold for them to adjust from their own environment.
- Limited On-Campus Facilities: The infrastructure is growing but not all facilities like hostels and transport options can sometimes turn out to be uncomfortable or need improvement specifically when the numbers of students continue to grow.
Remarks :
Strong in Academic reputation, strong in Research, and serene with the Himalayas, IIT Mandi was a place that attracted me. The institute features good placement record, up to date infrastructure, and collaborative culture. Furthermore its unique curriculum and entrepreneurial opportunities made it an ideal choice. If you successfully clear JEE Main, you will get admission to IIT Mandi through JEE Advanced. The cut offs vary by branch and category and the process is done over JoSAA counseling. No group discussions (GD), personal interview (PI) or written tests are required for undergraduate courses. To go for JEE Advanced I made strong in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, solved mock tests, and handled the time efficiently. Accuracy and speed were improved through regular revisions while practicing past papers.
Course Curriculum Overview :
The IIT Mandi curriculum is built on research and real world applications with a mix of core technical subjects and electives. With this, the project based learning helps develop practical and interdisciplinary skill. The course is Packed with Technology and research and innovation . Essentially, it came down to entrepreneurial opportunities and a hands on approach. Most of the faculty have PhDs from top universities, the faculty being highly qualified. Theory is combined with practical applications; this is a teaching that’s collaborative, and curious. Term exams are great, both timely and moderately taxing -- they evaluate concepts and problem solving. Regular assessments guarantee consistent engagement. Overall, which includes academics and career orientation, they are rigorous.
Internships Opportunities :
Internships at well known companies such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon, TCS and Bain & Company as well as Part time jobs at companies such as Reliance and Capgemini are offered by IIT Mandi. Interns help to work on real projects like software development, data analysis, AI modelling, and supply chain optimisation. After the second and third years, you can get an internship with the stipend of ?10,000 to ?50,000 per month, depending on the company. For instance, if you take a glance at Amazon's open positions, you’ll see it offers roles in operations and if you are a go to market specialist and believe you would fit in Google, your openings may begin with the technical person and your potential supervisors will be technical persons like the engineering Manager in charge of hiring and managing the software engineers in charge of creating and improving Google’s products and services.
Placement Experience :
There are great placements at IIT Mandi, top companies come to visit every year. It includes a minimum CGPA (most times it is 6 and above) along with other requirements of the companies. Those roles are software, data science, consulting, and core engineering and include recruiters such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Goldman Sachs and Tata. Last year, the highest package was ?60 LPA and the average package of ?15 LPA. Every year, more than ninety percent of students get placed and also in variety of higher study or research opportunities. After exploring the career opportunities available in my field I intend to either seek a certain role where my skills are aligned, or strive for higher education specialization.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
The General/OBC students anytime fees at IIT Mandi consist of ?1,00,000 (tuition), rs 2,500 (admission), rs 5,000 (refundable deposit), rs 25,000 (hostel/mess) and rs17,000 (other charges) that comes up to rs1,49,500 only in the first year. Fees are approximately rs1,47,000 per year from the second year on wards. Total 4 year cost comes up to rs5,90,000. Tuition fees for SC/ST/PH students are waived and 4 years in total amount to a total amount of 2,00,000 (-rs50,000 per year hostel and all other charges). Merit cum means (MCM) scholarships provide 2/3 tuition fees from rs 6 lacs to rs10 lacs for General/OBC students, a waiver is offered for SC/ST students. For SC/ST students we provide full fee waiver, free hostel/mess and monthly stipend of rs1000. Tata and Infosys provide private scholarships up to rs1,00,000 yearly. Economically weaker students at IIT Mandi are also entitled to housing and financial aid.
Campus Life :
IIT Mandi is filled with life and with differences, giving you a unique opportunity to soak in academics, social life and extracurriculars together. A peaceful and inspiring scenic campus is produced. The institute has many active clubs like robotics, coding, drama, music, dance, etc with many social initiatives through NSS, Himalayan explorer’s club. Major highlights include, the annually fests such as for RannNeeti at October and for Exodia (cultural) at March. Books, journals, and e resources are available in the library. The classrooms are modern, with smart boards and projectors. Cricket, football, badminton and gym are sports facilities. Clubs and events are managed by student run groups to foster a collaborative, fun campus culture. Life is dynamic life is joyful here.
Hostel Facilities :
The hostels offered by IIT Mandi are well maintained with well proportioned rooms with high speed internet and common areas. There has a mess in each hostel that provides a variety of menu having nice and hygienic prepared food. Not all foods are vegetarian, and not all are not vegetarian, depending on what is available every week. Admission is done by a very simple registration process on hostel rooms. Accommodation and mess charges are less than ?25,000 per annum. If renting out of town, there are plenty of PGs and rooms available nearby in Kamand or Mandi town, but because of the remote location hostels are easier. Hostels provide comfortable and engaging living environments, overall.

Placements are decent. Eligibility is typically at CGPA 6.0 or higher. Recruiters include TCS, Infosys ,Oracle, Wellsfargo etc.Highest package this year reached around 3 crores per annum as it was a foreign offer.
