Important Updates for IGNOU} }

IGNOU Admissions 2024 are open for the July Session and the lasst date for registration has been extended till July 15, 2024. Further, IGNOU is inviting applications for Statrtup Competition 2024. The applications are open for IGNOU students and Alumni, and the deadline is July 31, 2024.

IGNOU Admission 2026 for the July session was open till 15 September 2026 for both Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and Online programmes. Students had to apply online at ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in and pay a non-refundable registration fee of INR 300. IGNOU conducts no entrance exam for most of its programmes. Students who meet the required qualification can take admission.

  • B.Ed, PhD and Post Basic B.Sc Nursing are the only three routes that need an entrance test.
  • Most IGNOU programmes do not have an upper age limit.
  • For a bachelor's degree, students must have passed 10+2 in five subjects. Four subjects are not accepted.
  • Students already enrolled at IGNOU must complete re-registration to move ahead in the same programme. They should not apply as fresh applicants.
  • IGNOU does not release a cutoff or merit list because most admissions are not competitive.

IGNOU has 325 programmes, 69 regional centres and more than 2,000 learner support centres. It also runs 45 academic programmes through its online learning system and has overseas study centres in 15 countries. During admission, applicants select their regional centre and learner support centre.

IGNOU Admission Dates 2026

Event Date
January 2027 session, application opens December 2026 (tentative)
January 2027 session, last date to apply January 2027 (tentative)

Subject to revision. Kindly check with the official sources to confirm

IGNOU has not announced the January 2027 admission schedule or released the January 2027 Common Prospectus. The dates above are based on previous admission cycles. The Common Prospectus for July 2026 is the current governing document.

IGNOU UG Admission 2026

IGNOU offers undergraduate programmes such as BA, B.Com and BCA without an entrance test. A student who has the required qualification can apply, and admission is confirmed after document verification.

Programme Level Minimum Qualification Minimum Duration Maximum Duration
Undergraduate degree 10+2 or equivalent 3 years 6 years

For UG degree admission, IGNOU accepts 10+2 only when the student has passed in five subjects. A Senior Secondary certificate with four subjects is not accepted for higher studies at IGNOU. This rule follows a Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) communication.

Students who do not meet the five-subject condition can complete one Senior Secondary level course from the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and then apply to IGNOU. IGNOU also recognises some post-Class 10 diplomas as 10+2 equivalent. These include qualifying awards from State Boards of Technical Education, Industrial Training Institutes and polytechnics, along with the National Trade Certificate from the National Council for Vocational Training. The diploma must include at least five subjects. This equivalence does not apply to the B.Sc programme.

Most UG programmes have no upper age limit. Some programmes may mention a minimum age on the programme page.

UG admission is not based on cutoff marks, a merit list, seat allotment or counselling. Students apply through the ODL or Online portal, upload documents and pay the required fee. IGNOU verifies the uploaded documents before confirming admission.

IGNOU PG Admission 2026

IGNOU admits students to postgraduate courses such as MA, M.Com, MBA and MSW without an entrance exam. Applicants need a bachelor's degree for PG degree programmes.

Programme Level Minimum Qualification Minimum Duration Maximum Duration
Postgraduate degree Bachelor's degree 2 years 4 years

Programmes approved by bodies such as the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Indian Nursing Council (INC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) follow their own duration and admission rules.

Fresh admission and re-registration are different processes. New students use fresh admission at ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in. Existing students continuing to the next year or semester use onlinerr.ignou.ac.in. Re-registration does not require the INR 300 registration fee or a fresh document upload.

Particulars Fresh Admission Re-Registration
Who applies New applicants joining a programme Existing students continuing a programme
Portal ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in onlinerr.ignou.ac.in
Registration fee INR 300, non-refundable Not charged
Documents Full set uploaded Not required again
What is paid Registration fee and programme fee Programme fee for the next year or semester

Existing students who apply again as fresh applicants may create duplicate records. This can affect academic records and delay results. Re-registration is allowed when the previous year or semester is complete and the programme is still within its maximum duration.

IGNOU PhD Admission 2026

IGNOU PhD admission does not follow the regular open admission process. Selection is through the Research Entrance Test and an interview. Applications are submitted at ignou-phd.samarth.edu.in.

Programme Selection Route Portal
PhD Research Entrance Test followed by interview ignou-phd.samarth.edu.in

The PhD admission cycle follows an annual schedule instead of the January and July session pattern. Research scholars can use university library lending services by taking library membership and paying a refundable security deposit of INR 5,000.

IGNOU Certificate and Diploma Admission 2026

IGNOU certificate, diploma and PG diploma programmes generally admit students without an entrance test. The qualification requirement changes by programme, so applicants should read the programme page before applying.

Programme Level Minimum Qualification Minimum Duration Maximum Duration
Diploma and PG Diploma As specified per programme 1 year 3 years
Certificate As specified per programme 6 months 2 years

Diploma and certificate admission is confirmed after the application, fee payment and document verification steps are completed. The same open admission rule applies unless a programme states a separate selection process.

Rules That Get Applications Rejected

Applicants should check these rules before paying the fee.

  • Programme change is not allowed. A student who wants another programme must ask for cancellation and apply again. Refunds follow the university Refund Policy.
  • Direct admission to second or third year is not available. A student who has completed one year elsewhere must join the first year and then apply for transfer of credits.
  • Lateral entry is available only in programmes that offer it. The option appears in the form when the programme allows it.
  • Simultaneous registration has conditions. A student studying elsewhere may also join an IGNOU ODL or Online UG or PG programme. IGNOU does not change examination schedules for clashes.

Simultaneous admission is not allowed for AICTE, NCTE and INC regulated programmes. It is also not allowed for collaborative programmes such as BCOMAF, BCOMFCA, BECOMCAA, BHM, MCOMBPCG, MCOMMAFS, MCOMFT and MHA.

IGNOU B.Ed and Post Basic B.Sc Nursing Admission

B.Ed admission is based on the IGNOU B.Ed Entrance Test. Applications are submitted at ignou-bed.samarth.edu.in, and IGNOU uploads hall tickets on its main website before the exam. B.Ed is regulated by NCTE, so the rules on duration and simultaneous admission apply.

Post Basic B.Sc Nursing admission is through an All India entrance examination. IGNOU announces the process separately.

I chose IGNOU because of recent changes made to the curriculum in the year 2024. I was waiting for the new curriculum to make it possible to complete bachelor's in 4 years so that it can be applicable for foreign exchange programs and further masters outside India without the need for having to complete a bridge course. It's heavily convenient, the resources are available online, you merely have to finish assignments before the submission date, attend practical classes on Sundays and appear for the Yearly Examinations.

IGNOU follows the Credit System for all its courses and diploma programs. The Credit System is a special way of measuring the course requirements to complete a course including lectures, classes, assignments, and term-end examinations. Here are a few points about the IGNOU Credit System.

Credit is a measure or unit that shows the total study hours required by a student to complete a specific IGNOU course in any IGNOU Study Centre. As per the norms stated by IGNOU, One Credit is equal to 30 study hours. Each Credit is equivalent to 30 hours of study hours including all the offline lectures, listening to audio study materials and watching videos from the IGNOU portal, understanding the study material, writing assignments, and attending counseling sessions.

Thus, a 4-credit course comprises 120 study hours and a 6-credit course comprises 180 study hours. This helps the students to know how much academic effort they have to put in to complete the whole course successfully within the given duration. Completion of an academic course from IGNOU (a degree course or a diploma course) requires successful completion of the projects, assignments, and term-end examinations as per the requirement of each IGNOU course.

IGNOU has a specific operation for issuing certificates to students after they complete the assignments and term-end examinations. Normally, the period for receiving your IGNOU certificates may vary depending on several factors which we will discuss in brief.

After completing the given assignments and theory exams for the desired course, your results are processed and announced online through the IGNOU Online Portal. IGNOU generally announces their results within 45 days to 60 days after the last date of the term-end examination. After the results are published on the IGNOU website, the university updates the status on the IGNOU’s database where students can check their marks for individual subjects for the desired course.

After the results are announced, the process of issuing certificates is started by the IGNOU team which could again take around a few weeks to a few months. This slight delay could happen due to the administrative workload that includes records verification, preparation, and dispatch of certificates.

Students generally get their provisional certificates and mark sheets quite early (within 1 to 2 months from the date of the result declaration). However, the final degree or diploma certificate from IGNOU is issued during their convocation ceremony, which is held annually at your respective IGNOU Regional Office. If in any case, you have missed the convocation ceremony, then IGNOU will send the certificates through post to your registered permanent address.

Many IGNOU Candidates are a little bit confused about the minimum marks or passing grades required to pass the Assignments given for the academic session of any IGNOU Program. After taking admission to any IGNOU Study Centre, every student wants to know how much marks are required to pass the theory exams as well as the assignments.

If you want to pass the IGNOU Assignment for any IGNOU course, then the candidates must get 40% marks as minimum passing marks (40 marks out of 100 marks). If the candidate still fails to score the minimum passing marks after submitting the assignment, then the candidate needs to submit the assignment again to IGNOU.

IGNOU Assignments marks play an important role in the assessment as the assignment marks and theory marks both are important for the final marks of the assessment. Each assignment normally accounts for 30% of the total course grade marks, whereas the remaining 70% of marks come from the marks scored in TEE examinations.

Therefore, it is mandatory for students to strictly follow the assignment submission deadlines. Late submission of the assignments could deduct your assignment marks or reject your assignment which could affect your overall marks for the specific IGNOU Course.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) generally updates the assignment status depending on the submission schedule and evaluation process. While there isn’t a fixed date for the status update regarding the assignments, the status is normally updated within a few weeks to a few months after the submission of the assignment.

Here is a detailed overview of the process regarding the assignment status -

  • Submission Phase - Students must submit their assignments by the deadline given for each academic session of every IGNOU program. For instance, for the January session, assignments are generally submitted by March or April, and for the July session, assignments are normally submitted by September or October.
  • Evaluation Phase - Once the assignments are submitted, they are sent to the IGNOU evaluators to evaluate the assignments. This process can take a few weeks depending on the availability of evaluators and the number of submissions by the students.
  • Updating Phase - After the evaluation process, the marks are compiled and uploaded to the IGNOU portal. This update of marks generally happens in batches and can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Normally, students can expect their assignment status to be updated by late May to June for the January session and by late November to December for the July session.
  • Check the Status Online - Students can check the status of their assignments within the “Student Zone” section on the official IGNOU website. They need to log in with their enrollment number to view the status of their submitted assignments.

Delays may occur due to a variety of reasons such as a large number of submissions of the assignments, unforeseen circumstances, or administrative processes. Hence, students are highly advised to check the IGNOU website regularly for notifications and updates regarding the status of assignments.

In the context of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), the Control Number is a unique 11-digit number assigned to a student when a student submits an online application for a specific course or program at the IGNOU Online Admission Portal. This number serves multiple purposes during the application process and enrollment process at IGNOU, providing seamless management and proper tracking of student records at IGNOU.

When a student submits his/her application form to any IGNOU Regional Centre/ Study Centre (through online or offline mediums), an 11-digit Control Number is generated and assigned to the form. This number is very important for multiple reasons -

  • Tracking and Reference - The 11-digit Control Number allows both IGNOU and the applicant to track the status of the application (mainly admission at an IGNOU institute). If there are any queries or problems regarding the application, the Control Number can be used to instantly find the specific form in the IGNOU’s University Database.
  • Identification Purpose - The Control Number works as a specific identification code, preventing any confusion with other IGNOU students. This is specifically important for a large educational institute like IGNOU, which manages the track records of a large number of applicants.
  • Communication Purpose - The 11-digit Control Number is often required for any type of communication with the university (IGNOU), whether it is for any queries, assistance, or a continuation. This assures that the university’s staff can help the student effectively by referring them to the correct application.

Candidates must understand every step carefully before writing their IGNOU Assignment to avoid any type of error or mistake. There are some steps or instructions that you must keep in mind while writing your IGNOU Assignment. Take a look at the step-by-step instructions on how to write and create an IGNOU Assignment properly so that you’ll get good marks for the assignment.

  • Write Handwritten Notes - Always make sure you should write only handwritten notes as IGNOU only accepts handwritten assignments. Therefore, you should not type or print your assignments.
  • Use A4 Size Paper - Ensure that you write your assignments on A4 size paper or foolscap while writing your IGNOU assignments.
  • Extra Space for Comments - After you finish your answer, leave at least one or two lines blank on the assignment so that the evaluator can give his feedback regarding your assignment.
  • Choice of Pen - To complete their assignments during each TEE session for every IGNOU course, candidates can use either blue or black colored pens to write their assignments. Candidates are not allowed to use red or any other colored pens to write their IGNOU assignment.
  • Choice of Paper - Instead of using Blank White Paper to write your assignments, IGNOU evaluators or officials often recommend A4-size ruled paper to write your assignments.
  • Good Handwriting - Apart from that, having good handwriting can help you to make your IGNOU assignment more effective and understandable.
  • Avoid plagiarism or copying from other students - Copied answers from other students will get you zero marks on the assignment. Ensure that you don’t copy the assignment from another student, otherwise, the evaluators from IGNOU will instantly reject your assignment and you won’t get any marks for that.
  • Make the assignment presentable - Once you have completed the assignment writing task, use a paper file to organize all the assignments properly and present your arrangements in a well-organized manner with a beautiful front page.
