MAKAUT Admission Process
MAKAUT fills B.Tech seats on its main campus through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) board. JEE Main rank can also be used for admission if seats are available under the JEE Main quota.
B.Tech Eligibility: Students must pass 10+2 or an equivalent exam with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, along with Chemistry, Biology, or Computer Science. They need at least 45 percent aggregate marks in the qualifying exam, while reserved category students need 40 percent. The age rule is decided by the WBJEE board.
WBJEE Counselling Process: After WBJEE results, students register on the WBJEE board’s online counselling portal, CSAS. They enter college and course choices, lock their preferences, and check seat allotment results across multiple rounds. Students who accept a seat must visit MAKAUT with original documents and pay the admission fee before the given deadline.
MAKAUT’s own-campus B.Tech cutoff ranks usually fall in the mid-range of WBJEE. In earlier years, students with WBJEE ranks from 5,000 to 25,000 have received seats based on branch availability. CSE and IT remain the most competitive branches.
B.Sc, BBA, BCA and Integrated Programmes: For direct-admission courses in science, management, and law, MAKAUT conducts the Common Entrance Test (MAKAUT CET). Students must pass 10+2 in the relevant stream with 45 percent aggregate marks. Application dates and exam dates are released on the official MAKAUT admissions portal.
MBA: MBA admission is based on valid CAT, MAT, or MAKAUT CET scores. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree with at least 50 percent marks. Group discussion and personal interview rounds are held after the score-based selection.
M.Tech: Applicants need a B.Tech or B.E. degree. GATE is the main admission route, while MAKAUT CET is used for non-GATE applicants. The minimum eligibility is 55 percent in the qualifying degree, or 50 percent for SC/ST students.
M.Pharm: Admission is based on GPAT qualification or B.Pharm merit. Students must hold a B.Pharm degree with at least 55 percent marks.
MAKAUT also regulates admission to its 150-plus affiliated colleges. B.Tech seats in these colleges are filled through the same WBJEE counselling process. Students should check wbjeeb.nic.in for the latest round-wise seat allotment schedule.
MAKAUT Placements
The Training and Placement Cell at MAKAUT’s main campus handles recruitment activities for students in the university’s own taught programmes. These placement numbers are only for MAKAUT’s own-campus students and do not cover affiliated colleges.
MAKAUT reported the following placement outcomes for the NIRF 2024 assessment cycle:
| Programme Category | Students Eligible | Students Placed | Median Salary |
|---|---|---|---|
| UG 4-year (B.Tech) | 106 | 80 | INR 4.5 LPA |
| UG 3-year (B.Sc / BCA / BBA) | 213 | 141 | INR 3.5 LPA |
| PG 2-year (MBA / M.Tech / M.Sc / M.Pharm) | 509 | 373 | INR 3.26 LPA |
B.Tech students from CSE, IT, and VLSI are placed in large IT service companies and product companies. B.Sc and management students find roles in banking, financial services, retail, and analytics.
MAKAUT degrees are fully recognised for West Bengal government recruitment, including WBPSC, WBCS, and state public sector undertaking opportunities. This gives eligible graduates career options beyond campus placements.
MAKAUT Rankings
MAKAUT takes part in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and has been listed in the Engineering category.
| Ranking Body | Category | Year | Rank / Band |
|---|---|---|---|
| NIRF | Engineering | 2025 | Band 151-200 |
Since MAKAUT is an affiliating university, its ranking is based on the academic and research work of its own campus. The ranking does not combine the performance of all affiliated colleges. Its wider role includes regulation and examinations for 150-plus colleges in West Bengal’s technical education system.
MAKAUT Scholarships
MAKAUT students in own-campus programmes can apply for several state government scholarships. The main option is the Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means Scholarship (SVMCM), a West Bengal government scheme for higher education students.
Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means Scholarship (SVMCM):
- Value: Up to INR 60,000 per year for eligible engineering and technical students
- Eligibility: At least 60 percent in the qualifying exam for UG admission and 53 percent for PG admission, with family income within the prescribed annual limit
- Applicable to B.Tech, B.Sc, BBA, MBA, M.Tech, and other regular programmes at MAKAUT
- Applications are filed through the SVMCM portal at svmcm.wb.gov.in
MAKAUT students may also apply for these state government schemes:
- Post-Matric Scholarship for SC/ST/OBC Students: This is run by the West Bengal Backward Classes Welfare Department and the Tribal Development Department. It covers tuition and maintenance allowance for reserved category students.
- West Bengal Merit Scholarship: This scholarship is for students with excellent marks in qualifying exams who also meet the family income rules.
- Talent Support Stipend Programme: This state scheme gives financial help to students from economically weaker sections.
The university also helps students access central government scholarships through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). These include the Post-Matric Scholarship for SC/ST students from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, along with the Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme for children of ex-servicemen and coast guard personnel.
Students should apply for suitable scholarships at the beginning of each academic year. Scholarship money is sent directly to the student’s bank account through DBT, which means Direct Benefit Transfer.
MAKAUT Campus and Infrastructure
MAKAUT’s main campus is in Haringhata, Nadia district, West Bengal, about 50 km from Kolkata city centre. The 40-acre campus supports both the university’s own academic programmes and its administrative work.
Academic infrastructure includes computer laboratories with high-speed internet, biotechnology labs, electronics labs, engineering workshops, seminar halls, conference halls, and a central library with digital databases and e-journals. MAKAUT also has research centres connected with its engineering and technology courses.
Student community and campus life: The campus has 2,740 students, including 1,768 UG students, 959 PG students, and 13 PhD scholars. It has 146 faculty members. Student clubs, cultural activities, and technical festivals connect own-campus students with the wider MAKAUT network of affiliated colleges in West Bengal.
Hostel and accommodation: Separate hostels are available for male and female students at Haringhata. Hostel fees range from INR 9,700 to INR 20,250 per year, depending on room type. The hostel has dining facilities and basic amenities. Students from outside Nadia district and other states get priority during hostel allotment.
Connectivity: State transport and private buses connect the Haringhata campus with Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal. Kalyani railway station, the nearest station, is 12 km from the campus. Kalyani is connected to Kolkata’s Sealdah station through the suburban rail network, and the campus can be reached from central Kolkata in 1.5 to 2 hours.
MAKAUT vs VTU vs AKTU
MAKAUT is West Bengal’s state technical affiliating university. It can be compared with VTU, Karnataka and APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU), Uttar Pradesh because all three affiliate a large number of colleges and also offer their own taught programmes.
| Parameter | MAKAUT, WB | VTU, Karnataka | AKTU, Uttar Pradesh |
|---|---|---|---|
