TNDALU SOEL Admission Dates

The 2026-27 admission process has reached the enrolment and programme commencement stage after four rounds of centralised counselling. The next application cycle is expected to begin in May 2027.

Selection methods differ by programme. Undergraduate law admissions use qualifying-examination marks, while PhD admission includes an entrance test and interview.

TNDALU SOEL Courses and Fees

SOEL provides legal education from diploma to doctoral level. Its postgraduate portfolio includes 11 LLM specialisations. The following general-category totals are based on 2025 fee data.

The fee level is considerably higher for NRI quota seats. An integrated 5-year programme costs INR 22.39 Lakhs in total under this quota, while the complete 3-year LLB costs INR 16.48 Lakhs. The LLM choices are Business Law, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Cyber Law, Environmental Law, Human Rights, Intellectual Property Rights, International Law, Labour Law, Maritime Law and Taxation Law.

TNDALU SOEL Admission Process

Qualifying-examination merit and TNDALU’s centralised counselling determine admission to the undergraduate law programmes. CLAT is not used. LLM selection considers LLB performance and an interview, while PhD applicants take an entrance test and attend an interview.

1. Applicants must first meet the academic conditions specified for their chosen programme.
2. Eligible students enter TNDALU’s centralised admission and counselling process.
3. TNDALU prepares the relevant merit order from Class 12, graduation or LLB marks, depending on the programme.
4. Applicants select an available programme or specialisation according to their merit rank and seat availability.
5. Students who receive an allotment complete enrolment at the designated campus.

5-Year Integrated LLB (Hons.)

• General-category applicants need 10+2 from a recognised board, English as a subject and a minimum aggregate of 45%
• CLAT or any other entrance examination is not required
• Class 12 board marks alone determine the merit position
• TNDALU normally conducts four centralised counselling rounds between June and September each year
• Recent general-category closing levels have ranged from 93.5% to 94.5% in the qualifying board examination
• Tamil Nadu government reservation rules apply, with separate OBC, SC and ST cutoffs
• NRI quota seats are offered with a higher fee structure

During counselling, students choose BA LLB, BBA LLB, BCom LLB or BCA LLB. Within a particular counselling round, one cutoff applies to all four integrated streams.

3-Year LLB (Hons.)

Graduates of any discipline can apply if they have secured at least 45% in a bachelor’s degree from a UGC-recognised university. Graduation marks determine selection through centralised counselling. TNDALU does not set an age bar for this programme.

LLM Admission

An LLB or equivalent degree with the required minimum score is necessary for LLM admission. The selection process combines merit in the qualifying law degree with a personal interview. Applicants state their preferred specialisation when applying, and the 11 options are allotted according to merit rank and available seats.

TNDALU SOEL Cutoff

The integrated LLB cutoff is based on Class 12 board performance rather than an entrance-test score. In recent admission cycles, the general-category range has been 93.5% to 94.5%. OBC, SC and ST applicants have separate, lower closing levels under Tamil Nadu’s reservation rules. TNDALU publishes the exact closing cutoff after each counselling allotment.

TNDALU SOEL Placements and Career Outcomes

SOEL’s placement cell assists students with recruitment and career preparation. The main routes after graduation include private legal practice, judicial service, in-house corporate work, government legal employment and academic research.

After registering with the Tamil Nadu Bar Council, graduates may practise in the Madras High Court, the Supreme Court of India or district courts across Tamil Nadu. Another route is the Tamil Nadu State Judicial Service examination conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC), which recruits civil judges and judicial magistrates. Banks, public sector undertakings, corporate legal teams and government law departments also appoint graduates to legal officer and in-house positions.

TNDALU SOEL Rankings

SOEL is covered by the institutional ranking awarded to its parent university, TNDALU. In the 2024 NIRF Law category, the university was placed at Rank 36.

TNDALU is among India’s dedicated state law universities and is the only university of this kind established by the Government of Tamil Nadu. Its 36th position in the 2024 Law ranking places it in the national list alongside National Law Universities and the law schools of central universities.

TNDALU SOEL Campus and Infrastructure

SOEL uses two Chennai campuses to accommodate its undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. Perungudi campus is on M.G.R. Salai close to Taramani MRTS Railway Station. Poompozhil campus is at 5, Dr. D.G.S. Dinakaran Salai, Chennai 600028.

Students have access to a central library with legal databases, electronic resources and plagiarism-detection tools. Other facilities include a moot court hall for advocacy practice, computer laboratories, health care and campus hostels. Both locations also support NCC, NSS and sports activities. The library provides research material for Indian as well as international law.

TNDALU SOEL Scholarships

Eligible students from SC, ST and State Backward Classes Commission (SCC) groups can receive support through government-funded scholarship schemes.

TNDALU SOEL vs Madras Law College vs Saveetha School of Law

All three institutions are located in Chennai, but their ownership and admission systems differ. SOEL and Madras Law College are public options where merit determines admission. Saveetha School of Law is part of a private deemed university and also provides management quota seats.

Among these institutions, SOEL has the listed NIRF position of 36 through TNDALU and the widest stated LLM selection with 11 specialisations. Madras Law College, established in 1891, has the longest history and follows a lower government fee structure. Saveetha School of Law provides more access to seats through its management quota, including for students who do not meet SOEL’s high merit cutoff.
