The Consortium of National Law Universities conducts the offline test. It has 120 law-based multiple-choice questions, with one mark for a correct answer and a quarter-mark deduction for a wrong answer. Unlike CLAT UG, it tests law studied during an LLB degree.
What Is CLAT PG?
CLAT PG is the postgraduate Common Law Admission Test used for LLM admission at participating National Law Universities. An LLB or equivalent qualification is required; passing Class 12 alone does not make a student eligible for this paper. The examination takes place in December before the academic year named in its title.
For example, the December 2026 test is CLAT 2027, not CLAT 2026. University admission is a separate stage after the entrance result. An exam score does not by itself confirm a seat, a specialisation or a scholarship. The LLM course guide explains the degree and the broad specialisations available.

Who Can Apply?
| Eligibility condition | Requirement |
| Qualifying degree | LLB or equivalent examination |
| General / OBC / other categories without the specified relaxation | 50% or equivalent grade |
| SC / ST / PwD | 45% or equivalent grade |
There is no upper age limit. Candidates taking the qualifying examination in 2027 may apply, but they must produce proof of passing at admission. A final-year candidate is not excused from meeting the required degree marks.
Indian nationals, NRIs, PIO card holders and OCI card holders may appear. Foreign nationals cannot sit CLAT; NRI/NRI-sponsored seat applicants must approach the relevant NLU directly because the Consortium does not allot those seats. The PG eligibility rules separate these admission routes.

The Consortium has not fixed a 60-question Constitutional Law section. Constitutional Law is included alongside twelve other law areas, but no subject-wise question quota is published.
| Law area | Revision focus |
| Constitutional Law | Rights, constitutional structure, judicial review and institutional powers |
| Jurisprudence | Schools of legal thought, sources of law, rights and duties |
| Administrative Law | Administrative decisions, discretion, procedural fairness and judicial control |
| Law of Contract | Formation, consent, enforceability, breach and remedies |
| Torts | Duty, breach, causation, liability and defences |
| Family Law | Marriage, divorce, maintenance, guardianship and succession |
| Criminal Law | Elements of offences, responsibility and defences |
| Property Law | Transfers, interests in property and competing claims |
| Company Law | Corporate personality, governance and stakeholder rights |
| Public International Law | Treaties, state responsibility, jurisdiction and international institutions |
| Tax Law | Taxing powers, statutory interpretation and liability |
| Environmental Law | Environmental principles, statutory duties and remedies |
| Labour and Industrial Law | Employment relationships, industrial disputes and worker protection |
The revision focus is a practical grouping of LLB topics, not an official chapter-weightage chart. The CLAT PG syllabus explains how these subjects appear through judgments, statutes and regulations.
How to Prepare for Legal Passages
For each judgment extract, separate the facts, legal issue, reasoning and conclusion. An answer may be legally familiar but still wrong if it adds a condition that the passage does not contain. For statutory extracts, mark exceptions and provisos before applying the main rule.
| Reading task | Question to ask |
| Identify the issue | What legal question is the judgment or provision addressing? |
| Read the reasoning | Which argument supports the conclusion, and which is rejected? |
| Connect legal knowledge | Which doctrine or related rule explains the extract? |
| Summarise accurately | What is the narrow conclusion, without adding a new condition? |
| Apply the rule | Does a changed fact alter the answer, or leave it unchanged? |
Use the previous-year PG papers to practise reading and OMR-style answer recording together. Compare errors by cause: missed exception, incorrect doctrine, confusion between arguments, or a wrong answer transfer. These need different corrections; repeatedly rereading the same summary does not resolve all four.
Marks, Rank and LLM Admission
The ordinary raw-score calculation is correct answers minus one-quarter of wrong answers. For 80 correct, 25 wrong and 15 blank responses, the score is 73.75 out of 120. A final answer-key decision can change which responses are scored.
Equal PG marks are resolved by higher age, followed by a computerised draw. The UG Legal Reasoning tie-break must not be applied to PG candidates.
| Stage | What it involves |
| After the examination | Match the PG booklet with the applicable answer key |
| Result | Read the PG score and rank, not a UG merit list |
| Counselling invitation | Confirm eligibility to participate and complete the separate registration |
| NLU preferences | Choose programmes and universities for which the candidate qualifies |
| Allotment and admission | Meet payment, certificate and university admission requirements |
The admission sequence describes the broad process; individual round actions and payments require the current counselling notice. The 2027 FAQ places counselling in December 2026 / January 2027; this is a broad window, not a round-wise schedule. Seat availability, category rules and course fees belong to each NLU. There is no single reservation percentage or closing rank that applies to every LLM programme. The result guide separates score interpretation from admission eligibility.
