CEG Admission Process

CEG follows merit-based admission and does not offer management quota seats. UG engineering seats are filled through TNEA state counselling, while PG admissions are handled through Anna University centralised counselling.

B.E./B.Tech Admission (TNEA)

For B.E./B.Tech, admission is based on normalised Class 12 PCM marks through TNEA. CSE and ECE are highly competitive, with Round 1 closing marks often going above 199 out of 200. Branches such as Mining and Printing usually close in the 190 to 195 range for the General Category.

  • Eligibility: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, with at least 45% PCM aggregate, or 40% for SC/ST/SCA candidates from Tamil Nadu.
  • TNEA rank: The rank is prepared from normalised Class 12 PCM marks. No separate entrance test is held.
  • Seat types: Regular Aided seats are funded by the Tamil Nadu government, while Self-Supporting seats have slightly higher fees but use the same TNEA route.
  • No management quota is available at CEG. Every seat is allotted through counselling.

B.E. Lateral Entry into the 2nd year is offered to diploma holders through separate TNEA Lateral Entry counselling. Students need a 3-year Diploma in a relevant engineering branch with 45% aggregate.

M.E./M.Tech Admission (TANCET/GATE)

M.E. and M.Tech seats are allotted through Anna University PG counselling. Selection is based on TANCET rank or a valid GATE score. Popular CEG branches such as CSE and Communication Systems usually need TANCET ranks within the top 500 to 1,000.

  • Eligibility: B.E./B.Tech in a relevant discipline with 55% aggregate, or 50% for SC/ST candidates.
  • Entrance: TANCET ME rank or valid GATE score.
  • GATE-qualified students may receive an AICTE scholarship of INR 12,400 per month for PG study.

MBA and MCA Admission

MBA and MCA admissions are also done through Anna University counselling based on TANCET scores. MBA applicants need any graduation degree with 50% aggregate. MCA applicants must have BCA or B.Sc with Mathematics and 50% aggregate.

PhD Admission

For PhD admission, applicants need a PG degree with 55% marks. They must take the Anna University Research Entrance Test (AURET) and then attend an interview with the Doctoral Committee. UGC JRF and GATE-qualified candidates may get exemption from AURET as per UGC rules.

CEG Placements

Placements at CEG are managed by the Centre for University and Industrial Collaboration (CUIC). Each placement cycle includes more than 3,000 students from engineering and management departments, with over 200 companies visiting the campus every year. In 2024-25, the highest package reached INR 36 Lakhs and the average package was INR 7 LPA.

Hiring comes from IT services, core engineering, BFSI, consulting and product companies. Software and product development roles mainly attract CSE, IT and ECE students, while Civil, Mechanical and EEE students are hired for core manufacturing and infrastructure roles. MBA students are recruited for banking and management roles. Recruiters include Fortune 500 companies and leading Indian groups in automotive, energy and information technology. CEG also benefits from an alumni network built over more than 230 years. MBA and MCA students take part in a separate management placement process run by the university's business departments.
