BITS Pilani conducts BITSAT for admission in various programmes such as B.E, M.Sc, B.Pharm in BITS campuses of Pilani, Hyderabad and Goa.

  • BITSAT is a computer based exam, conducted in MCQ format across 70+ centres in India, Dubai and Nepal.
  • BITSAT features 4 sections namely Physics, Mathematics/Bio, Chemistry and English & LR.
  • The total questions in the BITSAT exam is 130, which needs to be answered in 3 hours, giving students nearly 1.4 minutes to solve each question.
  • One correct answer rewards 3 marks while incorrect answers lead to deduction of 1 mark.
  • Candidates can attempt 12 bonus questions if they finish all the 130 questions within time and can use the remaining time to attempt them.
  • Once you have opted for bonus questions, you cannot go back and edit your responses for the normal 130 questions.
  • Around 1.7 lakh candidates registered for BITSAT 2025 session 1 with total figure being around 3 lakhs for both the sessions, whereas, BITSAT 2024 saw 1.36 lakh candidates appearing with an acceptance rate of 2%, this shows the increasingly competitive nature of the exam.

BITSAT Exam Pattern 2026: Section Wise Question Distribution

BITSAT 2026 has a total of 130 questions divided into four sections.

  • Candidates aiming for engineering branches have to attempt English & LR, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics sections.
  • However, those aiming for B.Pharm have to take all the sections except mathematics. Such candidates have to attempt the Biology section instead of Maths.
  • BITSAT does not have any sectional cutoff and time limits, giving students flexibility to attempt as per their comfort.

The section-wise question and marks distribution for the BITSAT paper is shown below:

BITSAT 2026 Section-wise Question and marks distribution

According to the above analysis:

  • The Mathematics/Biology section has the most weightage in BITSAT. With 40 questions, the section forms roughly 31% of the exam.
  • Other three sections of English & LR, Physics and Chemistry carry equal weightage with 30 questions asked from each section.

Ques: Is there any sectional cutoff in BITSAT 2026?

Ans: No. There is no sectional cutoff in BITSAT 2026. BITS Pilani releases branch and campus wise cutoffs instead of sectional cutoffs for various sections of BITSAT.

BITSAT Year-Wise Difficulty Level Analysis

BITSAT has become competitive over the years. Each section now demands more preparation and better strategy.

Here is the BITSAT exam difficulty level analysis across the previous years as shown below:

BITSAT Year-wise Difficulty level analysis

According to the above analysis:

  • The BITSAT exam’s overall difficulty level ranged between easy to moderate in the time period of 2022-2024.
  • However, a sharp increase in difficulty level can be seen in the year 2025, where the overall difficulty level was Moderate to Tough due to lengthy Math and tricky Physics, as reported by candidates.
  • Talking about section-wise difficulty level, Physics saw an easy to moderate difficulty level in 2022 and 2023, further settling at moderate levels in 2024-2025.
  • BITSAT’S Mathematics section remained the most challenging section across the years, with difficulty levels ranging between Moderate to Difficult and was perceived as toughest in 2025 by many candidates.
  • Chemistry and English & LR sections saw nearly similar difficulty trends, starting from easy levels in 2022 and settled at easy difficulty in 2025 as well.
Year Overall Difficulty Physics Chemistry Mathematics English & LR Note
2025 Moderate to Tough (slot variations) Moderate
(numerical, conceptual, Modern Physics heavy)
Easiest
(NCERT-based, Organic & Physical focus)
Toughest & Lengthy (calculative, vectors, calculus) Easy Some slots felt tougher due to lengthy Math and tricky Physics; good attempts ~110–130.
2024 Moderate to Moderately Difficult Moderate
(sometimes difficult/tricky)
Moderate Difficult & Lengthy Easy (sometimes lengthy) Math dominated difficulty; many shifts had balanced but time-consuming papers
2023 Moderate Easy to Moderate Easy
(direct NCERT)
Moderate to Difficult (lengthy) Easy to Moderate Easiest among recent years in many shifts; heavy Class 12 syllabus weightage.
2022 Moderate to Easy Easy to Moderate Easy Moderate
(lengthy)
Easy NCERT-heavy and straightforward
2021 Moderate (similar to 2022) Easy to Moderate Easy to Moderate Moderate Easy Limited slot-wise data, but feedback aligns with 2022

Is BITSAT Easier Than JEE Mains?

There is no direct yes or no answer to the debate of BITSAT vs JEE Main difficulty comparison.

  • While BITSAT has 130 questions to be solved within 180 minutes, requiring speed and accuracy, JEE Mains has relatively lesser questions within the same duration, but still requires more effort due to questions being lengthy and difficult.
  • One Reddit user says “in JEE Main, I could afford to spend 5 minutes on one good question and feel okay about it. In BITSAT, spending 5 minutes on one question means you've already lost the game” Read more.
  • JEE Main requires you to think deeply whereas BITSAT tests whether you can apply the things you know, instantly!
  • The negative marking also makes a difference: JEE Main has ¼ negative marking while BITSAT has ⅓ negative marking, making risk taking more difficult in BITSAT.
BITSAT vs JEE Main comparison across various parameters

A Reddit user(current student at BITS Pilani) compares BITSAT with JEE Main, saying “JEE Main feels like a marathon while BITSAT feels like a sprint on steroids”, giving analogies to compare these exam’s time-taking and speedy natures. Read more in this Reddit Post.
