NIT Delhi Admission Process
Admission requirements and selection methods differ by programme. B.Tech applicants enter through JEE Main and JoSAA, M.Tech applicants use GATE and CCMT, MCA applicants qualify through NIMCET, and Ph.D candidates follow the institute’s research admission process.
B.Tech Admission
A valid JEE Main score from the relevant admission year is required for B.Tech selection. JoSAA then assigns seats according to the applicant’s category rank and branch choices.
- Complete 10+2 from a recognised board with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
- Secure at least 75% in Class XII or place within the respective board’s top 20 percentile
- Obtain a valid JEE Main score in the admission year
- Be at least 17 years old on October 1 of the admission year
The admission steps are:
- Qualify for JEE Main in the year of admission.
- Register through the JoSAA portal.
- Enter and arrange the preferred branches.
- Take part in the six seat-allotment rounds.
- Accept the allotted seat and complete the required reporting and payment steps.
For General category applicants, the JEE Main closing rank for CSE generally lies between 10,000 and 12,000. Civil Engineering and Aerospace Engineering usually close closer to the 25,000 to 28,000 range.
M.Tech Admission
CCMT, which stands for Centralised Counselling for M.Tech and M.Arch, handles regular M.Tech admission using GATE scores. Applicants need a B.Tech or BE in a related field with at least 60% marks. The minimum is 55% for SC/ST and PwD applicants. Their GATE paper must also correspond to the chosen M.Tech specialisation.
- Take the appropriate GATE paper for the intended specialisation.
- Register for CCMT and provide programme preferences.
- Receive an allotment based on the GATE score, category and available seats.
- Complete document checks and admission formalities after accepting the seat.
MCA Admission
NIMCET is the entrance examination used for MCA selection across participating NITs. Applicants must have studied Mathematics either in Class XII or during their bachelor’s degree and must hold at least a 60% aggregate in the degree.
- Meet the bachelor’s degree and Mathematics requirements.
- Qualify for NIMCET.
- Join the centralised counselling process for participating NITs.
- Confirm the allotted seat and finish the admission requirements.
Ph.D Admission
Research admissions take place twice each year, in January and July. Applicants with an M.Tech or equivalent degree may apply using GATE or UGC NET scores. Full-time external applicants and candidates sponsored by industry can also submit applications through the designated portals on the official website.
- Check the research-area requirements for the relevant admission session.
- Apply through the designated institute portal.
- Submit the qualifying degree and applicable GATE or UGC NET details.
- Complete the institute’s selection and admission stages.

NIT Delhi Rankings
The institute appears in the Engineering category of the National Institutional Ranking Framework. Research performance and placement outcomes are key parts of the NIRF assessment, and NIT Delhi has continued to develop both areas as a newer NIT.
| Ranking Body | Category | 2025 Rank | 2024 Rank |
|---|---|---|---|
| NIRF | Engineering | 65 (Score: 50.79) | 45 |
NIT Delhi Campus and Infrastructure
The Narela campus on GT Karnal Road in North Delhi contains academic blocks, subject laboratories, a computer centre, a central library and sports facilities. Students can reach the area from central Delhi through NH-44 and the Delhi Metro Yellow Line extension.
Residential facilities include four on-campus hostels named Dhauladhar, Shivalik, SRHC and Yamuna. Separate arrangements are provided for male and female students. The institute also runs a Scholarship Cell, Sports Centre, and Training and Placement Cell. Through the DASA scheme, which stands for Developing and Strengthening Institutions, NIT Delhi admits international students from developing countries and takes part in global student mobility programmes.
NIT Delhi Scholarships
Students may apply for central scholarship schemes offered through the National Scholarship Portal and AICTE. A fee concession also reduces the complete B.Tech cost for SC/ST students to INR 4.16 Lakhs, compared with INR 9.16 Lakhs for General category students.
| Scholarship | Eligibility | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| SC/ST Fee Concession | Admitted students belonging to the SC or ST category | Reduced total B.Tech fee of INR 4.16 Lakhs |
| NSP Central Sector Scheme | Students who scored at least 80% in Class XII and have parental income up to INR 4.5 Lakhs | According to NSP norms |
| AICTE Pragati Scholarship | Girl students with parental income up to INR 8 Lakhs | INR 50,000 per annum |
| AICTE Saksham Scholarship | PwD students with parental income up to INR 8 Lakhs | INR 50,000 per annum |
NIT Delhi vs NIT Silchar vs NIT Hamirpur
Students with JEE Main ranks from 10,000 to 28,000 may consider NIT Delhi alongside NIT Silchar in Assam and NIT Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh. All three institutes belong to the NIT+ system and admit B.Tech students through JoSAA, but their locations, institutional histories and rankings differ.
| Parameter | NIT Delhi | NIT Silchar | NIT Hamirpur |
|---|---|---|---|
| Location | Narela, North Delhi | Silchar, Assam | Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh |
| Established | 2010 | 1967 | 1986 |
| NIRF Engineering 2025 | 65 | 50 | 97 |
| Flagship Programme | B.Tech with 8 branches | B.Tech with multiple branches | B.Tech with multiple branches |
| Admission Route | JEE Main through JoSAA | JEE Main through JoSAA | JEE Main through JoSAA |
NIT Silchar, founded in 1967, has the stronger NIRF Engineering 2025 rank and a long-established alumni network in eastern India and other regions. NIT Delhi benefits from its national-capital location, where technology and product companies visit regularly and recruiters are more accessible. NIT Hamirpur has a lower-competition admission route, a developed campus built over several decades and a hill-station setting. Students can compare these factors with their preferred branch, location and available cutoff rank.
