SPA Delhi - Every Planner's Dream

What I Liked

  • Highly qualified faculty with vast research experience along with an unique teaching mechanism than other courses.

  • The wide exposure of interning in multiple government departments.

What I didn’t like

  • Lesser hostel seats forcing people to look for PGs which might be a bit costly.

  • Lack of effective coordination between different administrative divisions of the college leading to delays in critical matters like marksheet distribution, scholarship approvals, etc.

Remarks: At an undergraduate level, SPA Delhi is India's top college for pursuing a Bachelor in Planning. In 2014, it was declared an "Institute of National Importance," and last year (2022) it got the status of "Centre of Excellence" in the field of urban and regional planning.

~ Dec 21, 2023 (Hindustan Times)

It has multiple MoUs with international universities and government authorities (as external consultants) that help in gaining admissions to foreign universities and internships, respectively.

Admission to this college is done based on scores obtained in JEE Main Paper 3 for the B.Plan Course, and a minimum score of 98–99 percentile is required for admission. The minimum eligibility for appearing in this examination is mathematics at +2 level, no matter whichever stream you belong to.

Course Curriculum Overview: Although urban and regional planning can be considered a tough and hectic course, the subject expertise of the faculty makes it interesting. Most of the faculty members have doctorates from European or American universities, and the teaching methods adopted are way different from those of other universities and courses. The B.Plan course is divided into 8 semesters (4 years), and theoretical exams are scheduled after each semester. A practical studio-based learning approach is undertaken where any Indian city is chosen as a case study and field visits are conducted in that city to assess multiple aspects that would help in deciding its future course of development. The progress of this task is checked by faculty every Monday, which is designated as "Studio Review Days."

The college is registered on multiple scholarship portals of the government, and eligible students have received grants from multiple state and central departments.

Internship Opportunities: The college acts as an external project-based consultant for various government bodies like DDA, State Town Planning Departments, NHAI, PWD, etc., and hence getting internships in government bodies is not an issue. But most of them are usually unpaid. Many students opt for internships in private consultancies and think tanks like CEEW, SEEDS, NIUA, CSE, etc., which usually pay them a good stipend of INR 5000–10,000. A small section of students also prefer to pursue internships at premier academic institutions like IITs and IIMs, which are useful if one is interested in going into research or academic fields in the future.

Placement Experience: For the B.Plan Course, placement is a major issue where the on-campus rates hover between 10 and 30%. The rest of them get placed through off-campus means. Though this might appear disheartening, the four years of rigor teach you how to get your dream job on your own. Moreover, we have a very strong alumni network that helps with placements and internships. The average package offered at undergraduate levels varies from 3-6 LPA. Most of the students get admissions for masters at other universities, which gives a significant jump of 3–4 times in their undergrad salary levels.

Campus Life: There are 12–13 extra-curricular societies to explore your creative sides that range from music, dance, drama, etc. Two cultural festivals are held each year: Utopia and Mini Utopia, which bring together the entire college and all its alumni for a 3-day lifetime cultural experience.

The college also participates in multiple inter-college sports events, but the lack of playing areas on campus is a major issue for the students. An annual sports event, "Athlos," is also organized every year by the college.

All the classes are air-conditioned, and the library is one of the best in Delhi, especially in the domain of architecture and planning. Remote access to the library is still underway and might be activated in a couple of months.

The hostel is a significant issue as there is a lesser number of seats, and allotment is done based on semester marks. But there are other lodging options, like PGs and individual flats near the college.
