NIFTEM Sonepat Admission Process
Admission routes vary by programme. B.Tech seats are filled through national centralised counselling, while other courses use the relevant national or institute-level test scores. NIFTEM-K does not conduct a separate college entrance examination for B.Tech.
B.Tech Admission
JoSAA, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority, and CSAB, the Central Seat Allocation Board, allot B.Tech seats at NIFTEM-K. This is the centralised counselling system also followed by IITs, NITs and other centrally funded technical institutes.
- Applicants need a valid JEE Main score and must pass Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics or Biology. The minimum aggregate is 75%, reduced to 65% for SC and ST applicants.
- JoSAA assigns seats by JEE Main merit and reservation category across its counselling rounds. CSAB may conduct special rounds for seats that remain vacant after JoSAA.
- NRI, PIO and OCI applicants enter through DASA, which means Direct Admission of Students Abroad, and must hold a valid SAT score.
General category closing ranks have generally fallen between 40,000 and 80,000 in JEE Main. These cutoffs are similar to those of lower-ranked NITs, giving an option to students who qualify JEE Main but do not receive their preferred NIT branch.
BBA (Hons.) Admission
Selection for BBA (Hons.) uses CUET-UG scores. Applicants from any Class 12 stream may apply if they studied Mathematics and English.
MBA Admission
The MBA selection procedure has two stages. Shortlisting through an accepted test is followed by a group discussion and personal interview.
- A graduate from any stream may apply with at least 50% aggregate. The minimum is 45% for SC and ST applicants.
- NIFTEM Entrance Test, CAT, MAT and CMAT scores are accepted. A valid score in any one of these examinations can be used for GD and PI shortlisting.
M.Tech and M.Sc Admission
M.Tech applicants may qualify through GATE, CUET-PG or the NIFTEM entrance test, including the institute test route for those without GATE. CUET-PG is used for admission to M.Sc in Food Science and Technology.
- For M.Tech, applicants need at least 60% aggregate in a B.Tech or B.E. degree in Food Technology, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering or a related field.
- For M.Sc, a relevant science stream B.Sc degree with a minimum aggregate of 55% is required.
Ph.D. Admission
NIFTEM conducts the Research Eligibility Test, or RET, through several calls during an academic year for Ph.D. admission. A valid GATE, NET or JRF qualification may allow an applicant to be shortlisted directly for the interview.
NIFTEM Sonepat Placements
Because NIFTEM-K specialises in food education, most placement opportunities come from food processing and fast-moving consumer goods companies. According to NIRF 2025, B.Tech students received a median salary of INR 7.10 LPA.
| Metric | Details |
|---|---|
| B.Tech Median Salary | INR 7.10 LPA (NIRF 2025) |
| Placement Sectors | Food manufacturing, FMCG, food retail, agri-business, food safety and quality, supply chain |
| Top Recruiters | Nestle India, PepsiCo India, ITC, Amul, Britannia Industries, Hindustan Unilever, Parle, Mondelez India, Dabur India, Mother Dairy |
Typical B.Tech roles include production engineer, food quality and safety officer, research and development technologist, and food plant operations trainee. MBA students commonly move into supply chain management, business development and brand management roles at FMCG companies.
NIFTEM Sonepat Rankings
NIFTEM-K appears in two NIRF categories because its academic work connects engineering with agriculture and food science. Its specialist position is reflected in the Agriculture and Allied Sectors category.
| Ranking Body | Category | 2025 Rank |
|---|---|---|
| NIRF | Agriculture and Allied Sectors | 22 (Score: 54.61) |
| NIRF | Engineering | 101 to 150 band |
Its 22nd rank places NIFTEM-K among India's top 25 agriculture and food science institutions for 2025. The Engineering band covers its work in food engineering and food process technology.
NIFTEM Sonepat Campus and Infrastructure
NIFTEM-K operates from Plot No. 97, Sector 56, HSIIDC Industrial Estate, Kundli, Sonepat, Haryana 131028. The location is connected to the Kundli highway network and lies within commuting distance of Delhi NCR.
Campus facilities include research laboratories for food processing and bioprocessing, a central library with digital material, separate student residence halls for boys and girls, a cafeteria, a day care centre, and a health and wellness facility. The institute works with the food industry on technology development and joint research. It has also signed an MoU with the University of Melbourne.
MoFPI has designated NIFTEM-K as a Centre of Excellence in Food Processing Technology. Its activities include technology transfer projects, regular interaction with industry and the annual National Food Innovation Challenge.
NIFTEM-K vs NIFTEM-T vs SLIET Longowal
Students considering food technology can compare NIFTEM-K in Kundli with NIFTEM-T in Thanjavur and Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology, or SLIET. SLIET also admits food technology engineering students through JoSAA counselling.
| Parameter | NIFTEM-K, Sonepat | NIFTEM-T, Thanjavur | SLIET, Longowal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Location | Kundli, Sonepat, Haryana | Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu | Longowal, Punjab |
| Institute Type | INI under MoFPI, Deemed University | INI under MoFPI, Deemed University | Institute of National Importance |
| Admission Route | JoSAA/CSAB (B.Tech), CUET-UG (BBA) | JoSAA/CSAB (B.Tech), CUET-UG (BBA) | JoSAA/CSAB (B.Tech) |
| B.Tech Focus | Food Technology and Management only | Food Technology and Management only | Food Technology and multiple engineering branches |
| B.Tech Total Fees (General) | INR 7.28 Lakhs | Contact institute | Contact institute |
| NIRF Agriculture 2025 | Rank 22 | Not separately listed | Not in Agriculture category |
NIFTEM-K offers a food-focused campus near NCR and may suit students from North India. NIFTEM-T provides the same programme range from its Thanjavur campus for students based in South India. SLIET differs because it teaches food technology alongside several other engineering disciplines instead of specialising only in food-related education.
