CUTN Courses and Fees

CUTN runs 66 academic programmes through 13 schools. It is the only central university in Tamil Nadu listed here with a B.Tech course in Materials Science and Technology. Since it is funded by the UGC, most humanities and science courses have lower fees than many state and private institutions.

The School of Tamil Language and Literature and the School of International Relations are important parts of CUTN. The university is among the few central universities with dedicated doctoral programmes in International Relations and Tamil Studies. From July 2026, CUTN also started 4 online PG programmes through its Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE) to improve access across Tamil Nadu.

CUTN Admission Process

CUTN admits students through the UGC’s CUET system. CUET UG scores are used for UG Hons courses and B.Tech. CUET PG scores are used for MA, M.Sc, M.Com, LLM, and PG Diploma admissions.

B.Tech (Materials Science and Technology) Admission

For B.Tech, students need 10+2 with PCM and at least 45% aggregate. Selection is based on CUET UG score or JEE Main, followed by the CUTN merit list, document verification, and fee payment. This is CUTN’s only engineering course and is offered by the School of Engineering and Technology.

UG Hons Admissions

CUTN offers 24 UG Hons programmes. These 4-year courses follow the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and also include a UG Hons with Research option for students with strong academic performance. Admission is based on CUET UG, after which CUTN prepares subject-wise merit lists. Students must have 10+2 with at least 45% aggregate in the relevant stream.

PG Admissions

For MA, M.Sc, M.Com, and LLM courses, students need a relevant UG degree with 50% aggregate. CUTN prepares separate merit lists for each programme using CUET PG scores. For LLM, students must have a valid LLB or BA LLB degree with 55%.

Ph.D. Admissions

Ph.D. admission is based on UGC NET or the CUTN Research Entrance Test, which is held twice a year. CUTN admits Ph.D. scholars in all 28 departments. JRF-qualified students can receive research fellowships under UGC, DST, CSIR, and ICMR schemes.

CUTN Placements and Career Outcomes

CUTN works mainly as a teaching and research university. Many students move to higher studies such as Ph.D., M.Phil., or PG programmes, or prepare for government services instead of choosing mass campus placements. The Career Counselling and Placement Cell helps final-year students across schools with government job preparation, research opportunities, and industry-academia links.

B.Tech (Materials Science and Technology) graduates usually look at roles in advanced manufacturing, aerospace materials, DRDO, ISRO, materials testing laboratories, and research. The course is a niche engineering option, so large-scale corporate hiring is limited, but research pathways are strong.

Many CUTN graduates clear UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, and UPSC / TNPSC examinations, showing the university’s focus on academic preparation. Ph.D. scholars usually receive support through UGC or CSIR fellowships because of the centrally funded fellowship system, so paid employment during research is not normally required.

CUTN has a NIRF University 2025 rank of 83 in India. For a central university started in 2009, this shows its progress in academics and research. The university is also listed in the Nature Index, which points to its international research publications.

CUTN Campus and Infrastructure

CUTN has a 517-acre fully residential campus in Thiruvarur for students and faculty from different parts of India. The main facilities include separate hostels for male and female students, a central library, advanced science and engineering laboratories, a language laboratory, a mass communication studio, seminar halls, sports facilities, an indoor stadium, and a gymnasium.

The campus is in Thiruvarur town, the district headquarters of Thiruvarur district in the Cauvery Delta. The town lies on the Chennai to Tiruchirappalli rail and road route and has good links to both cities. Thiruvarur is also culturally important in Tamil Nadu and is known for the Thyagaraja Brahmotsavam festival and the Tiruvarur Thyagarajaswamy Temple, one of the state’s major Pancha Bhuta Stalas.

Since CUTN was established in 2009, campus development is still continuing. New school buildings, advanced research facilities, and a planned student activity centre are part of this growth. The university has added major infrastructure through UGC-funded development schemes.
