Course Description

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, is among the top institutes which offer PhD degrees across various disciplines. The institute has a robust faculty-to-student ratio, with around 375 faculty members guiding over 1,500 PhD scholars. Admission to PhD programs at IIT Kanpur is based on various exams such as GATE, NET, and JRF and combined with academic performance, and work experience. The PhD students even get financial support from the government until the completion of their PhD program. The application for PhD program at IIT Kanpur is opened twice a year, viz October- November for January Intake and March- April for July Intake. The application for the July 2024 session is closed. The application window was open from 20 March- 11 April 2024 for July admission 2024.

IIT Kanpur PhD Highlights

If you are a BTech graduate you can apply to the PhD program either through a valid GATE 2024.
An MTech graduate or master's degree holder must qualify any one of the following exams GATE, JRF, or NET.
Candidates applying under Sponsored / Part-time/ External Candidate can submit the complete application along with the required testimonials to the concerned departments on and before April 30, 2024.
After getting shortlisted, candidates will be called for a written test and a personal interview for the final admission call.

IIT Kanpur PhD Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for IIT Kanpur PhD programs vary across the discipline and it also depends on the latest qualification and qualified exam through which candidates are applying.

The common eligibility criteria are mentioned below,

Minimum of 75% marks in undergraduate degree for all of the disciplines and a minimum of 65% marks in masters degree.
The applicants must meet the IIT Kanpur cutoff criteria and must have a valid GATE/ JRF/ NET examination score.
The requirement of GATE/JRF/NET/JEST is waived for candidates having a Master's degree in Sciences/arts from IITs, IISc, IISERs, and NITs with a minimum CPI of 8.0 on a 10-point scale.

PhD in Engineering,	The eligibility criteria remain the same across all of the disciplines in Engineering and technology.
PhD in Sciences	The candidate with INSPIRE fellowships is also eligible. A valid JEST score is also an eligibility criterion for applying to the PhD program in Physics. Candidates with the NBHM fellowship will be considered for PhD in Mathematics/Statistics.
PhD in Cognitive Science	Applicants with an MSc in Cognitive Science are exempted from any entrance exam requirement.
PhD in Humanities & Social Sciences,	The candidates from any background must have a valid GATE score or must have qualified JRF, and NET in the case of PhD programs in the Humanities
PhD in Management	Master’s degree in disciplines like management, engineering, arts, or commerce. A valid GATE, JRF, NET, or a GMAT scores.
PhD in Design	A Master's degree in Engineering/Design/Architecture and JRF, or a GATE/CEED score, as applicable

IIT Kanpur PhD Admission Process

The detailed application process for PhD program at IIT Kanpur admission 2024-25 has been mentioned below,

STAGE 1

Candidates who fall under the minimum eligibility criteria can apply for the PhD program on the official website of IIT Kanpur.
Candidates must fill out all the details asked and pay the application fee as applicable.

STAGE 2

The shortlisting of the applicants will be based on their academic records, work experience, and the scores in GATE/JRF or NET examination as applicable.
The shortlisting is also based on the number of seats approved by the admission committee.

STAGE 3

To prepare a merit list for selection, the department will conduct a written aptitude test for the shortlisted applicants. Only those who pass the written test will be interviewed.
The panels conducting the personal interview will evaluate the academic background of the applicant, his/her general academic proficiency, and academic & related publications.

STAGE 4

A merit list will be prepared based on the applicant’s performance in the written test and the personal interview. Aggregation of marks for the eligible applicants will be as per the weights given below,

IIT Kanpur PhD Financial Assistance & Scholarships

Financial Assistance

A full Institute assistantship is available for 5 years INR 31,000 for the first two years to the junior research fellow and thereafter it is raised to INR 35,000 to the senior research fellow respectively for another three years.

INR 70,000 in the first year of the fellowship. In the second year, the stipend increases to INR 80,000.
ICHR JRF	PhD program in Historical Studies	Between November to December	INR 16,500 to INR 17,600 per month
Fulbright Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships	One recommendation letter must be from the Ph.D. supervisor. Applicant must submit their published/presented paper or extracts from the Master’s thesis.	Application Deadline is 15 July 2024.	The fellowship amount varies and is designed to help cover expenses related to tuition fees, student exchange program expenses, and other allowances.
Google PhD Fellowship	Applicants in researching in the field of computer science or related fields.	27 March- 8 May,2024	The amount is based on the duration of the fellowship and the circumstances of the applicants
Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund Scholarahip	PhD scholars in the fields of Indian History, Sociology, Philosophy, Ecology and environment, and Economics Applicant must be below the age of 35, on 1st October of the selection year.	June- 31 August, 2024	Maintenance allowance including tuition fee INR 15,000/ month. Contingent allowance for study tours within India, purchase stationary 18,000 per annum. The scholarship will be given for 2 years
Maulana Azad National Fellowship ( By Ministry of Minority Affairs)	Applicants' annual family income must be below 6LPA. Applicant must qualify UGC- NET or CSIR- NET examination. The Applicant must be covered under a minority community as per the Indian government.	Twice a Year. June and December	Scholars under this program receive INR 28,000 per month for 5 years.
