St. Xavier’s College runs UG and PG courses in Arts, Science, and Commerce. As an Autonomous College under Ranchi University, it follows its own syllabus and examination pattern while awarding degrees under Ranchi University.

B.Sc Data Science has a fee of INR 2,48,400, and B.Com Financial Market Operations has a fee of INR 2,06,050. These are premium, industry-focused programmes with higher fees because of their advanced infrastructure and placement-linked components. Other BA Hons and B.Sc courses remain competitively priced for a private autonomous college in Jharkhand.

St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi manages admissions through its own process because it is an Autonomous College. Students apply through the official college portal instead of any centralised state counselling system.

UG Admission

For UG courses, admission depends on Class 12 board marks. Students applying for BA, B.Sc, and B.Com do not have to appear for an entrance test. The college releases programme-wise merit lists using Class 12 marks in the relevant stream. Most programmes require 50% in the qualifying examination, while SC/ST candidates get relaxation as per reservation rules.

MA and M.Sc admissions are based on an entrance test conducted by the college. For M.Com, admission is given through B.Com marks and no entrance test is required. Each department holds its own PG entrance test to check undergraduate-level subject knowledge. Applicants must have a UG degree in the relevant subject from a recognised university.

The Training and Placement Cell at St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi organises campus placements every year. Placement drives mainly serve students from BBA, BCA, B.Sc Computer Application, B.Sc IT, B.Sc Data Science, B.Com, and Journalism. Many BA Hons and M.Sc students choose higher studies or competitive exams instead of campus jobs.

In 2024, the college placed 366 students, including 352 UG students and 14 PG students. The average package was INR 5.55 LPA, while the highest package was INR 42 LPA.

B.Sc Data Science and B.Com Financial Market Operations were added to improve placement options in data and finance roles. BBA and B.Com students usually look at jobs in finance, FMCG, retail, and banking. Journalism graduates from the BA stream are hired by media organisations in Ranchi and other parts of Jharkhand. Students from Sociology, Geography, and Social Sciences often prepare for JPSC, UPSC, or higher studies.

The college library contains 1 Lakh books and journals and is among the largest college libraries in Jharkhand. Science departments have laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Geology, Biotechnology, Computer Application, and Data Science. Student life includes the Xavier’s Students’ Association, the Nature Club, the Literary Society, and the Annual Sports Tournament. The campus is connected by road and can be reached from Ranchi Railway Station and Birsa Munda International Airport.

St. Xavier’s College Ranchi vs Gossner College Ranchi vs Ranchi College

St. Xavier’s College (SXC), Gossner College, and Ranchi College are well-known multi-discipline colleges in Ranchi. All three are affiliated with Ranchi University and cater to students from Ranchi and other parts of Jharkhand.

Ranchi College, founded in 1926, is the oldest of the three and is a government institution, so it is the most affordable and highly competitive for Science and Commerce admission. St. Xavier’s College is the only Ranchi University college among the three with UGC Autonomous status, which allows it to frame its own syllabus and examination schedule. SXC also reports a higher average placement than Gossner College, supported by stronger recruiter links and industry-focused programmes in Data Science, Financial Market Operations, and BBA. Gossner College is known for tribal language programmes such as Santhali and Bangla, along with Anthropology. All three cost less than tier-1 private colleges in other states.
