NMAT Language Skills Pattern

Language Skills contains 36 questions in 28 minutes. Its scaled-score range is 12-120, the same as the other NMAT sections.

That is an average of about 47 seconds per question, including passage reading. It is not a separate timer for each answer. You can choose where this section comes in your NMAT section order.

NMAT Language Skills Syllabus

Language Skills is broader than reading comprehension alone. A student comfortable with passages can still lose time on sentence order or precise word relationships. Include all six families in revision rather than treating vocabulary memorisation as the whole section.

The broader NMAT syllabus places these language questions alongside separate reasoning and quantitative sections.

Reading Comprehension: Choose What the Passage Supports

Original example: A passage says a library extended its evening hours for one month and recorded more weekday visitors. It also says the library began a publicity campaign that month.

A safe conclusion is that weekday visits rose during the month of the two changes. It is not enough to prove that longer hours alone caused the increase, because the campaign may also have influenced attendance.

When an answer uses words such as all, always or only, check whether the passage makes that same strong claim. An option can repeat familiar words from the passage and still change its meaning.

Grammar, Prepositions and Sentence Completion

Original example: In "The list of selected candidates ___ on the notice board", the main subject is list, so "is" fits. The plural word candidates is inside the phrase describing the list.

For a sentence-completion question, first decide the relationship between the two parts: contrast, explanation or result. Then test the options for grammar and meaning. Choosing a word because it sounds formal is not enough.

Keep a short record of the specific rule behind each error. Several wrong answers caused by subject-verb agreement need a different revision exercise from several answers caused by an unfamiliar word.

Para Forming and Analogies

Original paragraph-order example: A: "The town introduced a separate bin for food waste." B: "This change reduced the amount sent to landfill." C: "The collected waste was then used to make compost." A must come before B because "this change" refers to the introduced collection system. A also introduces the waste before C explains its later use. The exact position of B and C would need the full context or options.

That last distinction matters: a clue can establish one pair without proving the complete order. Do not treat a partial connection as a finished solution.

For an analogy such as bird : nest, identify the relationship before checking the next pair. A matching animal-and-home pair preserves the direction. Reversing the home and animal does not match it.

How to Practise Language Skills in 28 Minutes

Build separate short sets for passage questions, grammar and sentence order. During untimed review, explain both why the chosen answer works and why the closest alternative fails.

Then combine the topics under the 28-minute section limit. Include the time needed to read passages; do not start timing only after reading is complete. Check whether unfinished work clusters around reading, vocabulary or long para-forming questions.

On the real test, you cannot return to earlier answers. Practise making and checking the choice before moving forward rather than relying on a final review pass.
