NMAT VARC Preparation Means the Full Language Skills Section

NMAT calls this section Language Skills. It contains 36 questions in 28 minutes. Reading is important, but grammar, prepositions, sentence completion, para forming and analogies also belong in preparation.

The Language Skills syllabus gives the topic coverage. Do not import a preparation plan that treats the section as reading comprehension alone.

Reading Comprehension: Map the Passage and Test the Options

After reading a paragraph, give its role a short label: claim, example, contrast, explanation or conclusion. This makes it easier to return to the relevant part without re-reading the whole passage for every question.

Original example: A passage says a museum extended its opening hours and visitor numbers rose, while a new exhibition opened in the same month. It supports the observation that attendance rose, but does not establish that longer hours alone caused it.

An option blaming the entire rise on the new hours adds a stronger causal claim. Separate what was observed from the writer's possible explanation.

Grammar and Sentence Completion: Explain the Choice

In the first example, flowers is plural but the sentence is about one bouquet. In the second, a list of equivalent activities uses matching forms. These are rules you can test rather than choices made because an option sounds formal.

For sentence completion, identify whether the missing part creates contrast, cause or continuation. Test the meaning of the complete sentence after checking grammar. A word can fit the structure and still contradict the intended relationship.

Keep errors grouped by rule. Several agreement errors need focused agreement work, while several context errors need practice comparing the meanings of plausible options.

Para Forming and Analogies

The natural order in this original example is A-B-C. A introduces a route, B defines its connection, and C refers to that connection. The reference chain gives more evidence than the presence of one connector alone.

In longer sets, a fixed pair is not always the complete order. Check what must come before the pair and what can follow it. A pronoun needs a clear referent; a contrast needs an earlier idea to contrast with.

For analogies, name the relation in words. If the pair is author : book, the direction is creator to work. A matching pair should keep both the relationship and the direction, not merely contain two related words.

Practising Language Skills in 28 Minutes

The average allowance is about 47 seconds per question, including passage reading. Do not turn that average into a rigid limit for each answer: a short grammar item and a passage-based inference need different work.

Begin with untimed review until the reasoning behind the answer is clear. Then mix the language tasks under a section clock. Track where time is spent: understanding the passage, comparing two close options or repeatedly checking grammar.

NMAT does not let you return to submitted questions. Use timed practice that makes you settle the answer before moving on. The exam navigation rules matter as much as the question count.

Reviewing Language Errors and Choosing Resources

Use the NMAT questions and solutions to review why one option works and another fails. For official exam-format practice, use GMAC's NMAT practice resources.

When an unfamiliar word causes an error, record its meaning in that sentence and contrast it with the option you chose. A long isolated word list will not by itself fix errors caused by passage context or sentence structure.

The overall NMAT preparation plan keeps language work alongside reasoning and quantitative practice. A short language block on several days can reveal recurring errors better than one large unreviewed set.
